Two Alabama players named to 2025 Lott IMPACT Trophy preseason watch list
Announced on Wednesday, a pair of Alabama Crimson Tide defensive players have been named to the preseason watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy.
Those two players were the returning duo of LT Overton and Deontae Lawson, both of which were among the 42 total names across college football named to the 2025 preseason watch list.

Overton, a defensive lineman, transferred to Alabama from Texas A&M a year ago where he had a career-year with the Crimson Tide. Across 13 games played, Overton posted a career-high 42 tackles with three TFL and two sacks, and could easily surpass those totals in 2025.
As for Lawson, the inside linebacker is a returning team caption who is entering his fourth season as a starter with the Crimson Tide. Lawson is also coming off a career-year in 2024, one that was shortened by injury, where he had 76 tackles, seven TFL, two sacks, and an interception across 11 games played.
Alabama has won the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which recognizes the top defensive player in college football, only two times ever, which came in 2005 (DeMeco Ryans) and 2022 (Will Anderson Jr.). Last season's winner was Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.

Boston Celtics jersey history No. 20 - Doug Overton (1999-2000)
Boston Celtics jersey history No. 20 - Doug Overton (1999-2000) The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the 21st of 31 people to wear the No. 20 jersey, Boston guard alum Doug Overton. After ending his college career at La Salle, Overton was picked up with the 40th overall selection of the 1991 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native would play the first three seasons of his pro career with the (then) Washington Bullets (now, Wizards) after being cut by Detroit. He would also have stints with the Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets, and Sixers again before he signed with Boston in 1999. His stay with the team would span parts of two seasons, coming to an end when he signed with the Charlotte Hornets in 2001. During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Overton wore only jersey Nos. 20 and 9 and put up 3.5 points and 1.3 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Gov. Kay Ivey appoints new members to restructured veterans' board
Gov. Kay Ivey delivers the State of the State address to the Alabama Legislature in Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. (Will McLelland for Alabama Reflector) Gov. Kay Ivey appointed new members to the Alabama State Board of Veterans Affairs after a restructuring that gave the Governor's Office more control over the state agency. Ivey's office announced in a news release Friday the 11 new members and four returning members of the newly constituted board, who include representatives from various Alabama veterans service organizations. 'I am proud to assemble a strong and wide-ranging Board of veterans to serve all of their fellow veterans,' Ivey said in the statement. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX Four board members kept their positions in the newly constituted board: Deborah Walker and Charles Waugh from the Disabled American Veterans; retired Colonel Anne Toms of the Military Officers Association of America and retired Colonel Scott Gedling of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who served as the Board's vice chair. New appointees include retired Colonel Larry Vannoy, retired Colonel Walter Kozak and John Keen, Jr. of American Legion; Jeffrey Fisher of American Veterans; Sergeant Brandi Whitman of Disabled American Veterans; John Burks of Marine Corps League; Michael Urquhart of Military Officers Association of America; Lorenzo Nathan of Military Order of the Purple Heart; Robert Schmidbauer of The Veterans of Foreign Wars; Michael Davis of Vietnam Veterans of America and retired Colonel Lori Rasmussen of the U.S. Air Force. The appointments come after the passage of SB 67, sponsored by Sen. Andrew Jones, R-Centre, in March, which overhauled the Department of Veterans Affairs. While the legislation kept the board at its current size of 17 members, it removed its power to enact policies and rules, making it an advisory role to the governor's office. The new law also grants the governor the authority to appoint the agency's commissioner. Proponents of the restructuring argued that the bill was meant to improve services for Alabama's veterans, saying it would 'elevate' veterans' needs. The legislative change came after a contentious period between the governor and the previous board. Ivey had fired former Commissioner Kent Davis over a dispute concerning his management of federal grants. After Ivey demanded Davis' resignation and his refusal to resign, the former board members voted to keep him in his post, stating they found no evidence of wrongdoing. Davis subsequently resigned, but an attorney for Davis has indicated the possibility of legal action. Following the signing of the new law on March 18, Ivey appointed retired Brigadier General Jeffrey Newton as the new commissioner. Newton had been serving as the acting commissioner since Davis's dismissal. SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE

Alabama rises significantly in early 2025-26 rankings post-NBA draft withdrawal deadline
Alabama rises significantly in early 2025-26 rankings post-NBA draft withdrawal deadline It is no secret that the Alabama Crimson Tide were among the biggest winners from the 2025 NBA draft withdrawal deadline. As to why, Alabama - who were already considered among college basketball's best looking ahead to the 2025-26 season - saw a shocking turns of events as guard Labaron Philon announced right before the deadline that he was withdrawing from the NBA draft to return to the Crimson Tide. Weeks prior, Philon had previously announced that he would be remaining in the 2025 NBA draft, and would not return to Alabama. With the return of Philon however, the re-addition of the talented guard is certainly a boost to Alabama's 2025-26 roster outlook, and as a result, the Crimson Tide are now beginning to skyrocket up early Top 25 rankings, the latest of which came via ESPN's Jeff Borzello. In his updated Top 25 post-deadline, Borzello jumped Alabama seven spots up to No. 17, making the Crimson Tide one of the biggest risers behind only Florida. Borzello also said of the Crimson Tide: "Alabama was one of the big winners of the withdrawal deadline, with Labaron Philon making a late decision to remove his name from the draft and return to Tuscaloosa. The talented guard told reporters at the combine that he had closed the door on going back to college. But Nate Oats was on the hunt for a playmaker on the perimeter and now has Philon back in the fold." "Philon is part of a talented perimeter group that includes returnees Aden Holloway and a healthy Latrell Wrightsell Jr., while former five-star recruit Jalil Bethea will look to bounce back after transferring from Miami." "The frontcourt will likely have to rely on portal additions, namely Bucknell transfer Noah Williamson, who was named 2024-25 Patriot League Player of the Year, and Florida State transfer Taylor Bol Bowen, a skilled forward and former highly touted recruit. Aiden Sherrell needs to take a step forward, too." In addition to ESPN, USA TODAY Sports also recently labeled Alabama among the biggest withdrawal deadline winners due to the return of Philon.
