There are even four Texas BBQ restaurants with a Michelin Star. But the competition is fierce, just like it is for all restaurants these days. After 34 years of serving up classic Central Texas-style barbecue in Arlington, Bodacious Bar-B-Q will close its doors this August, confirming rumors circulating among loyal patrons. Owner Fran Ruegsegger announced the news in a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing gratitude for the generations of customers who have become "more like family and friends instead of just customers," according to a report on Chron. The Arlington location, which opened in 1991, is part of a broader legacy that began in 1965 when Dallas native Roland Lindsey founded the first Bodacious in Longview. Ruegsegger emphasized that the restaurant isn't closed yet and encouraged customers to stop by before the final day, which is still to be determined. "God never closes one door that He doesn't have a better one to walk through, so we are excited for whatever opportunities God has ahead for us," Ruegsegger wrote. When Bodacious closes its doors it will mark the end of an era for one of Arlington's most cherished barbecue joints. Running a restaurant where someone has to be on site at the crack of dawn to get a fire going, a requirement for a place that cooks BBQ, is a tall order. Bangkok Chefs Gather To Raise Funds For Meals For Myanmar
A tasting menu for two persons (plus beverage pairings) at the first and only three-Michelin-starred Thai restaurant in the world, Sorn in Bangkok, is one of the experiences guests can bid for—with all proceeds benefiting Meals for Myanmar Myanmar's devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake last March 28 has resulted in over 3,700 deaths, more than 5,000 injured individuals and approximately 200,000 left homeless. With monsoon season encroaching on the region, there is a critical window to provide shelter before the rains make it nearly impossible. Bangkok Foodies, a media platform and online foodie community, founded by Samantha Proyrungtong, launched Meals for Myanmar (#Meals4Myanmar on social media), a heartfelt campaign to help rebuild lives after the devastation. Proyrungtong has a deep appreciation for the country, having previously visited in 2017 and fondly remembers 'exploring Yangon's culinary and beverage scene via rickshaw, the Shan State countryside and cruising the magical Inle Lake, with the charm and warmth of the people [leaving] a lasting mark on me.' They have partnered with some of Thailand's most celebrated chefs, culinary professionals and establishments— many Michelin-starred and ranked on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants— to create special dining experiences with every baht raised going directly to trusted rebuilding efforts on the ground in collaboration with Sonne. Some of these experiences include: tasting menus for two persons inclusive of beverage pairings; private chef interactions; off-menu surprises; artisanal baskets; winery tours; and food content creation. Meals for Myanmar follows a social media-online auction format. Vouchers are dropped progressively on the Bangkok Foodies Instagram and Facebook channels. When a voucher is live, interested parties are invited to place their bids in the comments of the Instagram/ Facebook posts (until the deadline stated). Bidding starts at 1000 THB, with 200 THB minimum increments. Winners will be contacted by the Bangkok Foodies team to arrange payment and connect the buyer with the vendor. Inside Gold Coast's Over-The-Top New Steakhouse Perched in a Downtown Skyscraper
In recent times, Chicago has been once again embracing its meatpacking history with a rush of new steakhouse openings. Trend pieces are no doubt on their way about the allure of comfort food and a need to return to the simple life. However, that's not the formula deployed at the Alston, an opulent steakhouse that debuts on Friday, May 30, on the third floor of the 971-foot-tall One Chicago, a $750 million skyscraper built in 2022. This is the same building that houses Gold Coast's Whole Foods. The food's from Jenner Tomaska, the James Beard Award finalist behind Esme in Lincoln Park. Tomaska is showing discipline at Alston, embracing his new role in developing a steakhouse menu that can appeal to the masses without sacrificing his avant-garde style that brought Esme a Michelin Star. The hope is that Tomaksa can incorporate elements of fine dining, including superior service, quality ingredients, and cheffy techniques, to show Chicago that a great steakhouse is about more than just keeping the juices in the chops. Tableside preparations include a bread cart and a duck press with the poultry carved in front of diners. The Alston is supposed to represent Midwestern steakhouses crossed with nouvelle French cuisine. The meat is prime and dry-aged, cooked over charcoal. Wagyu comes from American, Japanese, and Aussie sources. They range from $55 for a six-ounce dry-aged filet to $260 for a 16-ounce, 60-day dry-aged American wagyu chop, called the S.W. Chairman's Cut. That comes with a butter infused with Red Boat Vietnamese fish sauce. An arsenal of sauces is available to accent the selections. A rack of Dover sole is a tribute to Esme's tasting menu and its unique showstopper. Salt-baked trout is also available. A selection of pastas and salads should sate vegetarians. A Members Tower costs $300 and comes with a dozen oysters, four spot prawns, three razor clams, two scallops, a half-pound of King crab, and a whole cold water lobster. Fifty/50 Restaurant Group, which also runs Kindling inside the Willis Tower, continues its downtown push. Visitors will find an assortment of textures used throughout the space. Don't blink, your eyes aren't deceiving you — the art on the ceiling of the main dining room changes. There's a digital projection screen that can stream a variety of art. It's a way Tomaska can bring a touch of Esme to the world of beef. There's a wine cellar, with selections curated by Charlie Trotter's alum Ken Frederickson, and tons of space for private events. A terrace with beautiful views of downtown Chicago will debut later this summer. Management hopes the outdoor seating will be more cocktail-focused, and there are plans for live music. There's also a members-only club which is downright intimate compared to the main dining room. That will come with a special menu.
