Restless review – relatable real-life horror in nightmare neighbour thriller

The Guardian31-03-2025

First-time feature director Jed Hart starts with a great premise for a low-budget psychological thriller about a very real subject, and he gets good performances from his three actors. Hart's direction is strong, but it's better than his script; for me the movie, having established its realist credentials, is let down by a completely unreal and silly ending.
Nicky, played by Lyndsey Marshal, is a hard-working agency nurse who is all alone, a single mum to a son away at uni. She lives a lonely but reasonably content life, listening to classical music, doing yoga and vaguely dating a clueless but nice man called Kevin, played by Barry Ward. But all this is utterly destroyed when a lairy and aggressive guy moves into the property next door and has loud parties with his mates every night until four in the morning; this is the unspeakable Deano (Aston McAuley), who responds with hostile contempt to Nicky's timidly polite requests to turn the music down – along with some belligerent self-pity: 'I've had a tough couple of years with my mental health.'
Things escalate from there and Nicky discovers that the police won't help because it's a matter for the council, who themselves have very limited power to intervene, and other neighbours can't or won't get involved as the noise doesn't affect them. This is a horror-film situation that really does happen in real life, and Hart certainly gives a sense of how it oppresses the victim but the wish-fulfilment finale, involving a very convenient discovery, is just too glib. Still, Hart's direction is fluent and confident.
Restless is in UK and Irish cinemas from 4 April.

Olivia Attwood feud erupts as Maura takes drastic action with her and Pete Wicks

Maura Higgins has reportedly ditched Pete Wicks from her social media months after their split. And it appears that his close pal Olivia Attwood has also had the chop by the Irish beauty. The former Love Island star, 34, and TOWIE man, 37, called time on their brief romance in February after appearing to be growing closer. Shortly after, Maura made a comment about Pete "cheating". ‌ Her remarks had Olivia quick to defend her mate insisting that was not the case. She took to Instagram previously to say cheating is "not funny" and said Pete "didn't cheat". Now, following the incident, it appears that Maura has had enough of the pair and is moving on without them. ‌ According to the Sun, the duo have followed Maura's move and have also clicked the unfollow button on the reality TV star's account. Pete and Maura allegedly had a number of rocky rows prior to their split. They had initially started dating last year, but never officially went public with their link-up - nor did they deny it. They were, however, spotted looking cosy on a number of occasions. The pair are said to have known each other for six years before they took their connection to the next level. but only started dating in 2024. Rumours the ex The Only Way Is Essex hunk and former Love Island star were dating began to swirl last year as the Mirror revealed they shared a smooch at the Pride of Britain Awards in October. Maura later posted a steamy TikTok video of the pair practicing a dance move. In the clip, Pete was seen holding on to Maura's leg as she lay on the floor. She then pulled herself up into a standing position, before the duo shared a hug and Maura raised her arm towards the camera. ‌ At the time, the post sent fans into overdrive and questioning their relationship. During her stint in the I'm A Celebrity jungle, Maura kept her cards close to her chest, but gave little hints of their pairing. Away from her love life, Maura won't be returning to the American version of Love Island. She had previously hosted the stateside version of Aftersun. ‌ However, a new presenter has now been revealed. Maura, who was also the social media host of the show, reportedly won't return due conflicting schedule issues. Instead, she will be replaced by Sophie Monk. The star is already familiar with how Love Island works due to being the host of the Australian version. Maura's exit isn't thought to be an "axing" but is rather her stepping back. She is said to be focusing on other projects instead, with some fans believing she could come back to host Aftersun for the second season of Love Island Games, which is set to film in Fiji later this year.

Glastonbury ticket sales cut for 2025 to ease overcrowding, says Emily Eavis

Glastonbury Festival has sold 'a few thousand less tickets' this year in a bid to avoid overcrowding, organiser Emily Eavis has said. The music festival, which usually has capacity for 210,000 people, is returning later this month, with British pop band The 1975, folk star Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop singer Olivia Rodrigo topping the bill. In an appearance on the Sidetracked podcast Eavis, 45, outlined the changes that have been made to this year's festival and said music area Shangri-La is 'going full trees and green space' which is 'completely the opposite to anything they've done in the past'. She also revealed that the festival has managed to buy some land that sits 'just on the outside of the site', which will be used for crew members. She added: 'We've also sold a few thousand less tickets, so it will be interesting just to see how that affects the dynamics on site.' The first group of tickets for the event sold out in 30 minutes last November, with the second lot selling out in fewer than 40. Eavis said times have changed, adding: 'There were years where you just couldn't sell out, you just couldn't give them (the tickets) away.' Glastonbury is running from June 25 to June 29 this year with performances from the likes of US rapper Doechii, UK singer Raye and veteran rocker Sir Rod Stewart, who will be playing during the coveted legends slot. Also performing is Irish rap trio Kneecap, US star Gracie Abrams and alternative pop singer Charli XCX. The line-up features a number of acts listed as TBA, as well as a mysterious act called Patchwork, who will take to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday. Careful not to draw speculation as to who the act could be, Eavis said: 'I've been working on Patchwork for a long time.' She also said that planning for their appearance had taken about a year for 'logistical' reasons. Also at the festival, presenters Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw will take to the BBC Introducing stage on June 26 for a live episode of Sidetracked.
