Where did Sam Darnold rank among starting quarterbacks in 2024?

USA Today17-02-2025

The NFL offseason is upon us. On Sunday, fans nationwide had to adjust to not having football on their televisions. But that doesn't mean we have to stop talking about football.
Nick Shook of NFL.com released his season-ending rankings of all 59 starting quarterbacks from 2024. The usual suspects were near the top, with Lamar Jackson finishing 1st, Josh Allen 2nd, and Joe Burrow 3rd. Patrick Mahomes was 7th after a weird year, and Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts finished 9th.
After leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record, Sam Darnold landed at No. 13, finishing one spot behind Geno Smith. Darnold stunned the NFL when he passed for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. Unfortunately, his two worst games of the season came in the Vikings' final two games, ending with a 27-9 Wild Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Shook referenced how the final two games affect Darnold's upcoming contract in 2025.
….[Darnold's] production through the majority of the year led many to believe he'd be in line for a big payday this offseason — but then a nightmarish final two weeks ended those dreams, and the Vikings' season. Darnold was at the center of Minnesota's meltdown, flopping in both Week 18 and their wild-card loss to the Rams, potentially costing himself millions of dollars in the process. That doesn't diminish all the good Darnold did in 2024, but it does call into question his value on the open market ahead of free agency.
Had Darnold performed at an average level in Week 18 and the playoffs, he'd likely have been in the top 10 of this ranking. The Vikings may have even advanced or had the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
But he still outperformed expectations throughout the season. It was Darnold's highest finish in these rankings, as his previous best was finishing No. 24 after the 2018 season.

NFL Fans React to Breaking Nick Chubb News

NFL Fans React to Breaking Nick Chubb News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the early part of his career, Nick Chubb established himself as one of the most powerful, consistent running backs in the NFL. After rushing for 6,341 yards while scoring 48 rushing touchdowns through his first five seasons of his career, injuries proceeded to take over. Advertisement Chubb, now 29 years old, has missed 24 total games in his past two seasons due to multiple injuries. Since 2023, Chubb has missed time due to a torn ACL, MCL, and a broken foot. The once dominant Cleveland Browns RB, has reportedly found a new home for the impending NFL season. According to multiple sources, Chubb, pending a physical, will sign with the Houston Texans ahead of the 2025-26 NFL season. Chubb will join Joe Mixon in the backfield, adding to an already talented roster that consists of Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, and Dalton Schultz. The instant the news broke of Chubb's potential new deal, NFL fans rushed to social media to post their reactions. Advertisement "Bro is still dangerous," @SleeperHQ posted on X. Another user on X, is more concerned on the impact this has on Chubb's former team, "Browns are fully cooked." @BetMGM posted a throwback to a dominant touchdown run by Chubb back in 2019. Another user on X appears to think this is a major upgrade to the Texans backfield, giving them a strong one-two punch, "Chubb and Mixon is a nasty duo. Where Shedeur Sanders Stands in Browns' QB Depth Chart Today

Where Shedeur Sanders Stands in Browns' QB Depth Chart Today originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shedeur Sanders may be the fourth quarterback on the Cleveland Browns' depth chart, but he remains one of the most talked-about players in the building. As the Browns continue offseason workouts, the rookie quarterback is quickly learning that the NFL is a different world, especially when you're trying to climb from the bottom of a crowded quarterback room. Advertisement During Wednesday's OTA session, Sanders didn't take any first-team reps, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. That's not unexpected. Veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett currently headline the depth chart, while third-round pick Dillon Gabriel was drafted two rounds before Sanders and appears to be ahead of him for now. Despite the limited opportunities, Sanders made the most of his reps. Per ESPN Cleveland, he completed 9 of 14 passes in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills, throwing three touchdowns and one interception. The Browns even shared a highlight of one of those scores, a sharp throw to receiver Kaden Davis that drew praise from reporters on site. Joe Reedy of the Associated Press called it 'the best throw of the day.' For most fifth-round quarterbacks, stat-tracking at OTAs would be rare. But Sanders isn't most quarterbacks. Thanks to his college pedigree, high-profile family, and the unexpected drop in the draft, every move he makes will be heavily watched. He's one of the most scrutinized fourth-string quarterbacks in recent memory. Still, his status on the roster comes with real challenges. Sanders is fighting for attention and reps, which are hard to come by when the team has three quarterbacks ahead of you. Without significant snaps in training camp or preseason games, it's difficult to make a case for meaningful regular-season action. Advertisement Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees praised Sanders' preparation and grasp of the offense but also acknowledged that he's still a rookie learning the ropes.'He's really put in a lot of work, as all those guys are,' Rees told the Associated Press. 'You can tell on the mental side, learning the system, calling it, getting into rhythm, he's put a lot of time and effort into that. When you do that, the game slows down and you can focus on completions. He's done a nice job of that as camp's progressed.' Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, throwing at minicamp.© Jeff Lange / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Sanders' interception on Wednesday came off a tipped ball into traffic, another sign of the growing pains that come with transitioning to the NFL. His arm strength, vision, and mobility give him long-term upside, but he'll need to show consistency to move up the depth chart. For now, the focus is on development. Sanders isn't expected to start this season, and the Browns aren't rushing his timeline. But that doesn't mean he won't be closely watched. With his talent, work ethic, and media profile, Sanders remains a compelling figure in Cleveland's offseason narrative, even as a fourth-string quarterback. Advertisement If he continues to progress, it's only a matter of time before he forces his way into the conversation. Eagles Predicted to Have Multiple Sleeper NFL MVP Candidates

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Coming off a Super Bowl-winning season, the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to be right back in championship contention. As a team, the Eagles are recognized as one of the strongest across the board. But do they have an individual on the roster who is a potential MVP candidate for next year? Recently, Bleacher Report laid out a handful of potential MVP candidates who have crept into "sleeper" territory, based on the odds being laid out by sportsbooks early on in the offseason. With five players listed, the Eagles have two on the board. To no surprise, the candidates are the quarterback Jalen Hurts and the running back Saquon Barkley, who happens to be the only non-passer on the list. "Jalen Hurts' fantastic supporting cast probably cost him MVP consideration in 2024, and that's a shame because the uniquely talented star was the NFL's fifth-highest-rated passer while producing a combined 32 touchdowns. The problem is only 18 of those came through the air, and the tush push doesn't win over too many voters," BR's Brad Gagnon writes. Jalen Hurts (1) of the Philadelphia Eagles throws a pass during Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 09, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jalen Hurts (1) of the Philadelphia Eagles throws a pass during Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 09, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Eagles defeated the Chiefs 40-22 MoreHurts is no stranger to the MVP conversation. During the 2022 season, when the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl for the first time with Hurts under center, the quarterback spent many weeks favored to take the award home. Unfortunately, a late-season injury caused him to miss some time, and he lost out. The narrative surrounding Hurts isn't always super positive. Between the tush-push generating so much controversy and the star power surrounding Hurts offering him a ton of help, the Eagles' strong roster-building tends to play against Hurts, causing him to carry the "system QB" label often. Speaking of star power that helped push Hurts and the Eagles forward last season, Saquon Barkley could be in the running for MVP for the second season in a row. "If Barkley can take it another step and actually take down Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing-yardage record this year, the 28-year-old could become the first MVP at his position since Adrian Peterson in 2012," Gagnon wrote. It's hard to argue the idea that MVP is for quarterbacks to lose. Over the past 12 seasons, a quarterback has taken home the award. To no surprise, quarterbacks are currently favored to make it 13 in a row. Barkley shouldn't be doubted, though. His first season in the midnight green was remarkable. In 16 games, he rushed for over 2,000 yards, averaging a career-high 5.8 yards per carry. Barkley had 15 total touchdowns in the regular season and added five more in the playoffs. The Eagles always had a knack for building a strong offensive line, resulting in giving even an average running back a chance to shine more often than not. Once a proven star running back like Barkley got behind the line, records were broken. It would have to take a major step back in order for Barkley not to be on MVP watch throughout his second season in Philadelphia.
