Qantas Group, Virgin Australia reap mega earnings on little aviation competition, strong domestic travel demand: ACCC
Australia's major airlines continue to reap huge earnings as limited competition and strong travel demand has secured strong financial results for the nation's dominating carriers.
This is according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission which delivered its latest report monitoring the nation's domestic airline sector.
The consumer watchdog pointed to Qantas Group's $1.5b in earnings for the first half of 2025 financial year, which includes its budget subsidiary Jetstar.
Qantas Group earned $916m from its domestic operations across both carriers while Jetstar reporting a massive earnings surge of about 54 per cent between the first half of the 2024 and 2025 financial years.
It comes as Jetstar remains the only low-cost carrier in Australia since the collapse of Bonza last year and Tigerair's exit in 2020.
ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said the lack of competition was a major boon for the budget airline.
'Jetstar has been able to capitalise on the continued absence of competitive pressure from another low-cost carrier in the domestic market to increase its market share and operating margin,' Ms Brakey said in a statement.
The watchdog said the withdrawal of Rex from the major city routes after it went into administration sent more passengers to Virgin Australia, nudging the major carrier's market share up three per cent to 34 per cent.
This comes as Virgin secured three Boeing 737 aircraft leases from Rex.
While Virgin does not publicly report its half-year results, its former CEO Jayne Hrdlicka said the airline achieved record profits in the first half of the 2025 financial year after it was restructured under Bain Capital.
Qantas' profit was boosted by its 80 per cent share of the corporate travel market, playing an important role in Qantas Domestic's $647m in earnings.
"The high half-yearly earnings reported by Qantas Group reflect its dominance of the domestic airline sector, with Qantas and Jetstar accounting for over 60 per cent of passengers," Ms Brakey said.
While passenger demand took a hit during March with the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred leading to a downturn in Brisbane and Gold Coast flights, passenger numbers surged in April due to the school holidays, Easter and ANZAC Day all falling in a three week period.
'Airservices Australia noted that 17 April 2025 (the Thursday before Good Friday) was the busiest day for domestic travel in the past five years,' the ACCC wrote.
Qantas delivered its first dividend since 2019 earlier this year after revealing its stellar results for the first half of the 2025 financial year.
'Our financial strength means we are now in a position to pay our shareholders dividends for the first time in almost six years,' Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said.
Alongside the dividend, the airline said it had paid 27,000 non-executive employees $1000 each as a "thank you payment" in December.
Qantas also noted a drop with international airfares of about 6.6 per cent, while domestic flights increased 0.8 per cent.
Jetstar's low fares were a point of pride for the company as about one third of tickets below $100 for the six-month period.

A survey by comparison site Canstar Blue found Australians are spending $77 on wine every month, on average, an increase of 17 per cent from the same time last year, when the figure was sitting at $66. The jump in beer spending has been even steeper: up 30 per cent, going from $76 to $99. That's well in excess of inflation, as the average price of beer rose a far more modest 4.5 per cent in the 12 months to March. Spending on wine is also up, although not by as much. 'No chance – you should have booked that ticket months ago,' the woman said. I would once again be folded like origami in economy. Truth be told, I should have known better. Premium economy is now so popular that despite the increase in the number of international airlines offering the elevated cabin class (jumping from 42 to 63 between 2017 and 2022, according to aviation analytics specialists Cirium), seats are quickly being snapped up well in advance by travellers seeking a premium experience without breaking the bank. New to the cabin class? Here's what you need to know. WHAT IS PREMIUM ECONOMY? When you want the opulence of business class at a price point that's closer to its economy cousin, premium economy aims for the middle ground. An exclusive space offering fewer seats than in economy (and sometimes even fewer than you will find in business), the key highlight in this cabin class is space and comfortable seating. Seat specifications vary between airlines, but passengers flying premium economy can bank on an extra 12cm-18cm of legroom, 2.5cm-5cm of extra seat width and an additional 5cm-7cm of seat reclining space. Qantas premium economy seats are wider and have more legroom than economy. WHAT EXACTLY DOES PREMIUM ECONOMY OFFER? Extra space and legroom is a commonality, but each airline sets its own standards when it comes to what it's willing to shoehorn into its premium economy offering. Generally speaking, travellers in this cabin class can expect to enjoy on-ground perks such as extra baggage allowance, dedicated check-in counters to beat the queues and priority boarding and baggage handling. In the air, the cabin class tends to include an enhanced dining experience using proper tableware, with what is often a full complimentary menu of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Add to that an improved entertainment system, luxury amenity kits, a dedicated cabin crew and – back to the all-important seat – a seat cushion that's thicker and more comfortable, along with a thicker blanket and fluffier pillow. Some airlines, such as Delta, offer an upgraded menu offering for premium economy passengers. HOW HAS PREMIUM ECONOMY CHANGED? Any time you have the pleasure of flying premium economy, you can thank the Taiwanese, who introduced the concept (initially titled 'Evergreen Deluxe Class') in 1992, courtesy of Eva Air. When the product was first launched, however, it was purely an in-air experience offering extra legroom, wider seats and little else. It was only after Virgin Atlantic launched 'Mid Class' – pitched as the sweet spot between its 'Upper Class' and economy classes and rebranded to premium economy shortly afterwards – that things changed somewhat. Despite passengers still 'enjoying' the same meals served in its economy cabins, premium economy passengers were offered separate check-in counters at the airport, welcome drinks upon boarding and a separate cabin with larger seating. As tempting as it may be to book the first premium economy seat you can find, the cabin class experience varies widely between aircraft models. Generally, newer planes such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 787 Dreamliners and even the A380 tend to offer a higher standard of product and experience, with dimmable windows, individual storage areas and access to lounge areas. Although some airlines' retrofitted 777s still provide that all-important space, they can have older, less comfortable seats, so doing your research on the aircraft model being operated on your desired route is essential to get the best value for your dollar. HOW MUCH DOES PREMIUM ECONOMY COST? Don't let the word 'economy' fool you, flying premium economy still costs a pretty penny and while prices vary significantly between carriers, you can expect to pay between one and a half to three times the price of an economy fare. To give you an idea, a premium economy fare from Sydney to Dubai with Emirates starts from $2912, while a business class ticket for the same route starts from $7805. Air New Zealand has economy fares between Sydney and Los Angeles via Auckland from $2300, while a premium economy fare would start from $4800 and business premier from around $11,400 return. Meanwhile, a Qantas business all-inclusive fare between Sydney and London might start from $11,711 return, but premium economy will start from $4740. Emirates' premium economy is considered one of the best in the world, with fares less than half the price of business class. WHICH AIRLINE HAS THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY? Ultimately this depends on what you consider to be good value. However, those considering dipping their toe into the world of premium economy for the first time might be interested to know that Japan Airlines was awarded the world's best premium economy class at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2024 where they also took home the top gong for the best economy class seat. Emirates, Eva Air, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, All Nippon Airways, Delta Air Lines, Cathay Pacific, Air France and Qantas round out the top 10 of the awards. Meanwhile Vietnam Airlines was named inaugural winner of the best value premium economy award for 2024, along with Air New Zealand, which was awarded best premium economy. DO ALL AIRLINES OFFER PREMIUM ECONOMY? Surprisingly not. Despite the popularity of the cabin class, some airlines – Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines among them – have opted out, saying the elevated level of their economy product places it on par with many airlines' premium economy offerings. 'Qatar Airways does not offer a separate premium economy cabin, as its economy class already features one of the widest seats in the industry, complete with adjustable headrests, excellent on-board dining and extensive in-flight entertainment options,' an airline spokesman said. On Japan Airlines, premium economy passengers get Sakura Lounge access. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM BUSINESS CLASS? The difference between economy and premium economy is easily understood, but – flat beds aside – the benefits between premium economy and business class can be a little trickier to quantify beyond 'the latter offers a higher-end product'. This, of course, can mean access to a more extensive range of gourmet food and drinks, larger screens and more entertainment options, and more luxurious amenity kits. While a few airlines – Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and LATAM among them – offer lounge access to passengers booked in premium economy on international flights, most do not unless you have the equivalent of gold or higher status with the airline you're flying (or one of its partners). With Qantas, for example, passengers booked on a premium economy seat can use select lounges if they have a single-entry lounge pass, hold a gold or platinum frequent flyer status, or have Oneworld Sapphire status (or higher). BEFORE YOU BOOK, CONSIDER THIS Due to the popularity of the cabin class, booking well in advance is advised – particularly on longer sectors such as the Sydney-to-London 'Kangaroo Route', say the team at Qantas. Fares are 'likely to be lowest outside three months from departure'. Research the aircraft on your desired route and ask yourself whether the extra outlay will be worth flying on an older, retrofitted aircraft. Look at what is on offer at the connecting airports. Some airlines offer lounge access and/or services at their hubs, for example, but not at other airports, leaving you hanging at the departure gate. Beauty behemoth Mecca cracks $1b in sales as consumers splurge on makeup, skincare, fragrance
Australia's biggest cosmetics retailer Mecca has cracked the $1 billion revenue barrier as persistent cost-of-living pressures fail to dent consumer appetite for make-up, skincare and fragrances. New filings to the corporate regulator revealed the Jo Horgan-founded business raked in just over $1.2b in revenue in the year to the end of December 2023, up from the $971.5m recorded in the previous year. Net profit rose from $26.9m to $27.8m. Having first launched Mecca with a single shop in Melbourne's South Yarra in 1997, Ms Horgan and her husband and co-founder, Peter Wetenhall, have put Mecca in almost all major malls and store fronts in wealthy suburbs around Australia. Nationally, it has a footprint of more than 100 stores — including seven in Perth — and a presence online. It sells more than 200 brands across categories including make-up, skincare, fragrance and hair care. A Mecca spokeswoman declined to comment about the retailer's financial performance. Despite higher interest rates and inflation forcing households to cut back on other discretionary items, Australians' appetite for cosmetics and beauty products appears to be holding up. Experts have dubbed it the 'lipstick effect'. Reportedly coined by beauty giant Estee Lauder's former chair, who noticed an increase in the sale of lipstick during the US recession of the late 1990s, the lipstick effect reflects the idea that consumers will turn to small indulgences in times of economic downturn when they can't afford larger luxuries. Mecca in recent years has faced speculation over whether the co-founders would put the business up for sale. A company spokesperson has previously denied Ms Horgan was contemplating a sale. According to the latest accounts released this week, Ms Horgan and Mr Wetenhall — both listed as directors of Mecca — did not pay themselves any dividends. In 2022, the pair pocketed $12m. Mecca holds the biggest market share in make-up in Australia at about 21 per cent, which far outstrips that of Sephora, the cosmetics chain owned by French luxury goods giant LVMH. Sephora's Australian division reported a loss of $13.6m in 2023, while online beauty retailer Adore Beauty, another major industry player, reported revenue of $195.7m in the 2024 financial year. ASX-listed Adore Beauty has signalled its intention to open more than 25 stores nationally within the next three years. It has already opened two in Victoria. Mecca's 2023 accounts — which were late by about a year — come as the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday revealed household spending posted a modest 0.1 per cent lift to $75.7b in April, continuing the run of softer consumer spending data so far in 2025. Contributing to the growth was a lift in spending in hotels, cafes and restaurants (up 2.2 per cent), health (up 1.7 per cent) and recreation and culture (up 1.1 per cent), likely fuelled by back-to-back Easter and Anzac public holidays in April.
