Major police operation underway after stabbing spree at German train station, woman arrested
Multiple people were wounded, some suffering life-threatening injuries, after a woman allegedly stabbed travelers with a knife on Friday at Hamburg Central Station in Germany.
The 39-year-old woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was arrested shortly after the attack without incident, Hamburg Police announced on X.
Officials believe the woman acted alone, but the motive is unknown.
"Investigations into the background are in full swing," police said.
The attack happened in the late afternoon inside the station on the platform between tracks 13 and 14, according to a report from the Associated Press.
Hamburg's fire service said six people suffered life-threatening injuries, three people were seriously injured, and three others had slight injuries, German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.
However, police later said the number was not firm, only confirming "several" people had life-threatening injuries, according to the AP.
State-owned railway company Deutsche Bahn posted to X saying they were "deeply saddened" by the act of violence.
Tracks 11 to 14 at the main station were closed, and delays and diversions were announced for long-distance trains.
"We are fully supporting the authorities in their investigations on site," Deutsche Bahn wrote in a post.
Police confirmed a "major" operation is currently underway.
More than 550,000 travelers pass through Hamburg's main station each day, making it the most frequented passenger railway station in Germany, according to its website.
The station, which opened in 1906, is just a short walk from the city center and features 75 shops and restaurants.
In February, one person was seriously injured in a stabbing at Berlin's Holocaust memorial near the U.S. embassy.
On Wednesday, Elias Rodriguez, of Chicago, was charged with killing two Israeli Embassy staffers during a shooting at an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee in Washington, D.C.

Madeleine McCann search in Portugal ends after three days
The fresh search for Madeleine McCann has ended after investigators spent three days in areas near to where the three-year-old disappeared 18 years ago in Portugal. German investigators left the search area at about 17:15 local time before Portuguese counterparts then removed the outer cordon from the site. Madeleine disappeared while on holiday with her parents in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007, sparking a Europe-wide police investigation that has become one of the highest-profile missing persons cases. It is unlikely authorities will disclose the result of the search for several weeks but a conversation the BBC had with one officer suggested nothing significant was found. Police officers on Thursday were seen holding pitchforks as they combed land in the area on the outskirts of the municipality of Lagos and some used pick-axes and shovels to dig some of the undergrowth. A digger was used to remove rubble from one of the abandoned structures at the search site. Later in the day tents erected as part of the base area for investigators started to be taken down. Personnel were seen loading vans parked near the police officers' base area in Atalaia, and German and Portuguese officers were seen shaking hands and embracing as the search drew to a close. Diggers and specialist equipment were brought in to help scour scrubland and abandoned buildings on Wednesday. On the night Madeleine disappeared, her parents had been at dinner with friends at a restaurant a short walk away while their three-year-old daughter and her younger twin siblings were asleep in the ground-floor apartment. Madeleine's case was initially handled by the Portuguese authorities with the aid of the Metropolitan Police. German police took the lead in 2020 when they identified German national Christian Brückner as their prime suspect, who is known to have spent time in the same part of Portugal between 2000 and 2017. German authorities suspect him of murder. British police continue to treat the case as a missing persons investigation. Brückner has repeatedly denied any involvement and no charges have been brought against him relating to Madeleine's disappearance. The 48-year-old is serving a prison sentence in Germany for an unrelated rape case and could be released as early as September. Portuguese prosecutors approved a European warrant to allow German teams to conduct the searches on private land. The search took place between where Madeleine vanished and where the German investigators' prime suspect was staying at the time. Last month, Kate and Gerry McCann marked the 18th year anniversary of their daughter's disappearance, saying their "determination to leave no stone unturned is unwavering". Police consider whether 'King of the Hill' actor's sexual orientation played a role in his killing
HOUSTON (AP) — Investigators are looking into whether the sexual orientation of 'King of the Hill' voice actor Jonathan Joss played a role in his shooting death in Texas, authorities said Thursday, walking back a previous statement about the potential motive. Joss' husband has claimed the person who killed the actor yelled 'violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire outside his home in San Antonio on Sunday night. A day after the shooting, San Antonio police issued a statement saying they had found 'no evidence whatsoever to indicate that Mr. Joss' murder was related to his sexual orientation.' But during a news conference on Thursday, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the statement was 'premature' and that whether Joss' sexual orientation played a role in the shooting 'is part of the investigation.' 'I will own that and simply say again that we simply shouldn't have done that. It was way too early in the process for any statement of that nature to be issued,' McManus said. The police chief said many in the LGBTQ+ community 'are feeling anxious and concerned' after Joss' shooting and that 'a lot of it has to do with that premature statement.' 'The loss of Jonathan Joss was tragic, most heavily felt by the LGBTQ+ community,' McManus said. Texas does not have separate hate crimes charges. But if homophobia is found to have been a motive in the shooting, that could result in a harsher sentence at trial under the state's hate crimes law. The San Antonio Police Department's mental health unit as well as a unit known as SAFFE that works with residents to help prevent crime 'had extensive engagements with Mr. Joss, making repeated efforts to mediate conflicts and connect him with services that he may have needed,' McManus said. The January fire at Joss' home is still being reviewed by arson investigators, McManus said. Joss lost all his belongings in the blaze and his three dogs were killed. Actors who worked with Joss, along with friends and fans have honored Joss' memory with tributes.
