Packers coach Matt LaFleur provides update on Tucker Kraft's groin injury

USA Today3 days ago
Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said tight end Tucker Kraft has been working through a groin injury over the last practices, so the team decided to keep him off the field for Family Night on Saturday in an attempt to allow the injury to clear.
"He's been dealing with it for a few days, he's been powering through," LaFleur said following Saturday night's practice. "We thought it was best to give him a couple of days and let that thing come down."
The Packers are off Sunday and don't have an open practice again until Tuesday, so Kraft will have extra time to rest before LaFleur's team enters a crucial week leading into the preseason opener on Saturday night. Considering Kraft practiced through the injury earlier this week, it's likely this is a minor issue. But caution is necessary when handling one of the team's most important offensive players, especially this time of year.
LaFleur also confirmed running back Emanuel Wilson avoided a major injury when he went down during Friday's practice. The initial fear was a significant knee injury.
"We dodged that one. That's some really good news," LaFleur said.
LaFleur did not have an update on rookie Savion Williams, who was pulled from the practice on Saturday night after making a few plays in team periods. The third-round pick had been in the league's concussion protocol.

Former NFL RB LeShon Johnson convicted in federal dogfighting case

Former NFL player LeShon Johnson has been convicted on six federal felony counts for his role in operating a large-scale dogfighting ring in Oklahoma, federal prosecutors announced on Monday. The 54-year-old, who played for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants in the 1990s, now faces up to 30 years in prison and fines totaling up to $1.5 million. The charges stem from a years-long investigation into Johnson's operation, which authorities say was responsible for one of the largest dogfighting cases ever prosecuted in the U.S. Federal agents seized 190 dogs from Johnson's properties in Broken Arrow and Haskell, Okla., calling it the largest seizure of its kind in a federal dogfighting case. Many of the animals were found to be injured or scarred. Investigators also uncovered equipment used to train dogs for fighting, including treadmills, bite sticks, steroids and detailed records of fights and breeding activity. Prosecutors said Johnson operated under the name "Mal Kant Kennels," where he bred and sold dogs -- mostly pit bulls-- trained for fighting. Evidence presented at trial included financial records showing more than $400,000 in sales over four years, with transactions conducted via Cash App, some involving out-of-state and even international buyers. This was not Johnson's first brush with the law over animal cruelty. He was previously convicted on state animal fighting charges in Oklahoma in 2005 but avoided prison time. Authorities believe Johnson may have been involved in dogfighting even during his NFL career, which ended in 1999. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Packers star quarterback Jordan Love reveals he almost quit football after father's suicide

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love revealed he almost quit football at 14 years old in an article he wrote in "The Players Tribune" on Monday. When Love was 14 years old, his father committed suicide the summer after his freshman year of high school. Love wrote that when football began in the fall, he wanted to quit. "When football started that fall, I wanted to quit. It wasn't even that big of a deal. I was a nobody. I was the smallest kid on the field — literally. My freshman year, I was 5'6", 136 pounds. Maybe 5'7" with my Vans on. I didn't even make JV. I was the backup QB on the freshman team. Just some dude," Love wrote in "The Players Tribune." The Packers quarterback said his mom talked him out of quitting, and made him a deal. "(Mom) saw right through me. She saw how much I was hurting. I just wasn't in my right mind. So she made a deal with me," Love wrote. "She said, 'Just give it one more year. If you don't love it at the end of this year, and you want to stop, then we'll stop.'" While Love didn't magically turn into a superstar that season, he said that playing allowed him to "forget about everything for a few hours." "I couldn't say no to my mom. I gave in. Got out the car….. Went to practice. Kept going. And I wish that I could say 'The rest is history.' But it wasn't history. Like I said, I was a regular-a-- dude. I made the JV squad, and I had a lot of fun with my friends. When I was on the field, I could kind of forget about everything for a few hours. That was a win," he continued. Love said without his mother, and "without that brotherhood of football, I never would have made it." "That camaraderie of football took me out of a really dark and lonely place. Through everything, the one thing that I could always count on was my friends and family. There's just no way I'd be here without them. No way I'd have made it out of Bakersfield. No way in hell that I'd be the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers," Love said. Love is entering his fifth season, all with the Packers, and his third season as the team's starting quarterback. Last season, the team was 9-6 in Love's starts, and he had a completion percentage of 63.1% with 3,389 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
