Uttarakhand flash flood: 9 Army men feared missing after mudslide hits Harsil base near China border; 150 troops join search
DEHRADUN: At least nine personnel of the Indian Army were feared missing after a mudslide hit their base camp in Harsil valley near Indo-China border in Uttarkashi district around 220km away from Dehradun on Tuesday afternoon.
Two others, who too were earlier missing, were later safely rescued.
The mudslide struck after around 45 minutes of the disaster in Dharali village - about 4km from the Army camp in Harsil valley.
Elaborating, public relations officer (defence), Dehradun, Lt Col Manish Srivastava said that the missing personnel were attached to the 14 Rajputana Rifles which were stationed at the Army camp.

The unit's base camp was adversely affected after being hit by a mudslide in which nine are feared missing.
A search and rescue operation has been launched, even as around 150 other personnel of the unit are currently involved in the primary rescue operation led by commanding officer of the unit, Col Harshvardhan in Dharali,' said Lt Col Srivastava.
Another Army officer, privy to the details, told TOI, 'As per the preliminary information, there are no officers among those missing.'
'That assessment would be done later as the first priority is to find those missing and take necessary steps to ensure others are safe in case of a similar emergency amid the ongoing heavy rains,' said the officer.

The Army base in Harsil is largely aimed at ensuring required security arrangements and to cater to any military emergency at the India-China border which is 20-25 km away from there. It is located in close proximity to a camp of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
Earlier in the day, commanding officer of Joshimath-based Ibex Brigade, Brig Mandeep Singh Dhillon, while briefing about the ongoing Dharali rescue operation being carried out by the Army personnel from Harsil base, said that it was hit by a mudslide.
He had, however, not mentioned any missing personnel in the incident.
'Despite this, the Army is determined to carry out the rescue operation at Dharali after reaching within 10 minutes of the tragedy. Due to the close proximity to Harsil camp, they were the first to reach there and initiate a search and rescue operation,' said Brig Singh.

"Low DO levels threaten aquatic life and pose serious health risks to residents relying on these rivers," he said. Last year, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classified the Pavana river under the 'Priority 1' category, marking it among India's most polluted rivers. Despite its role as a primary drinking water source for the city, PCMC's efforts to address river pollution appear inadequate. Reports of floating dead fish and toxic foam in the river are frequent. 500m long, 27m wide: New bridge on Sukhna Choe to beat the blues
1 2 Chandigarh: The city's third high-level bridge on the Sukhna Choe near Shastri Nagar, connecting Manimajra to Sector 26, will be 500 metre long and 27 metre wide. It will be four-laned, with 5m wide pedestrian pathways and dedicated cycle tracks as part of the bridge. The bridge will start on one side from near the T-junction, Sector 26, and on the other side near Shastri Nagar. The level of the bridge will be integrated with the adjacent roads to achieve the intent for which the bridge was constructed. Part of the project is the plan to upgrade the T-junction, which currently has a traffic light point. "The T-junction will be raised by 2 metres for smooth movement of traffic. A slip road will also be constructed towards the Transport Chowk side. A free lane will be provided for traffic coming from the Sector 26 side towards the Manimajra side," said a UT official. The existing bridge over the Sukhna Choe is at a lower level, a causeway, and often gets inundated during monsoons, making the road unsafe and inaccessible. This gravely impacts traffic movement. The proposal for a high-level bridge on Sukhna Choe at this site was first proposed in the Chandigarh Master Plan (CMP-2031). The urgency to implement the CMP proposal came after major traffic disruptions caused by flooding in recent years and the increasing incidence of traffic snarls. During the monsoon of 2023, after waters from the Sukhna Lake were released into the Sukhna Choe, the culvert was flooded, and the fast-moving water caused major damage to it. This resulted in traffic being closed on the route for several days. The administration started planning the upgradation of the existing connectivity over the Sukhna Choe near Bapu Dham Colony. The UT engineering department was directed to undertake a feasibility study of the location. Under the study, the volume of traffic and its pattern were examined, and a consultant was hired to plan the bridge. Centenarian Fr Aloysius D'Souza passes away
Mangaluru: Fr Aloysius D'Souza, a senior priest of the Diocese of Mangalore, passed away at St Zuze Vas Home in Jeppu on Thursday. He was 100 years and seven months old. His funeral mass and burial rites will be held at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia, on Friday. Fr D'Souza was a priest for 72 years, being ordained on 24 Aug, 1953. He celebrated his centennial birthday on Jan 29, becoming the first priest in the Diocese of Mangalore to reach the age of 100. A grand Thanksgiving Eucharist marked the occasion at St Joseph Seminary, Jeppu, where he continued to serve for over two decades, even after his retirement. Born in Puttur on Jan 29, 1925, to Martin and Piedade D'Souza, Fr Aloysius's life was a testimony to simplicity, discipline, prayer, and commitment to his priestly call. Known for his intellectual depth and pastoral zeal, he held several prominent roles during his priestly journey. He served in parishes such as Bejai, Arva, and Kinnigoli.
