Why is Murray State called the Racers? Explaining nickname amid College World Series
Murray State is the "party crasher" of the 2025 College World Series.
Led by coach Dan Skirka, the Racers are just the fourth No. 4 seed to advance to the CWS, played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. But make no mistake about it, they belong at this stage. Murray State won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship and then proceeded to win the Oxford Regional and Durham Super Regional over No. 10 national seed Ole Miss and Duke, respectively.
The Racers are making their first-ever appearance at the CWS in 2025 and could make history. The biggest question fans may have about Murray State isn't if they belong at the College World Series, but rather, where does their nickname of the "Racers" come from?
Here's what you need to know about Murray State's athletic nickname, history and more:
Why is Murray State called the Racers?
According to Murray State's website, the school's athletic programs were nicknamed the "Thoroughbreds," representing the state of Kentucky's love for horse racing.
However, journalists had issues fitting the team's moniker in headlines and used shortened names, such as: "T-Breds", "'Breds", "Race Horses" and "Racers." In the late 1950s, the Racers became the nickname for all of Murray State's athletic programs.
That is, however, except for the baseball program. Until 2014, the baseball team was still called the "Breds."
What is Murray State's mascot?
Murray State's mascot is a costumed horse named Dunker. The mascot won the 2023 MVC Mascot Madness competition, which was voted on by fans across the league on social media.
In addition to Dunker, the Racers have a thoroughbred, nicknamed Racer One, who runs a celebratory lap on the running track around the football field. A different horse performs the duty each year, ridden by a student jockey.

UCLA gets off to fast start, holds off upstart Murray State 6-4 in College World Series opener
OMAHA, Neb. -- Roman Martin and AJ Salgado drove in two runs apiece to lead UCLA to a 6-4 victory over a Murray State team making its College World Series debut Saturday. The Bruins, in the CWS for the first time since they won the championship in 2013, built a 6-0 lead before the Racers began chipping away at it in the middle innings. UCLA closer Easton Hawk pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the Bruins' fourth straight win in an Omaha opener. UCLA (48-16) will play Monday night against the winner of Saturday night's game between No. 3 national seed Arkansas and No. 6 LSU. The Missouri Valley Conference's Racers (44-16), only the fourth No. 4 regional seed since 1999 to advance to the CWS, will try to keep their first appearance going when they play Arkansas or LSU in an elimination game on Monday. Ian May (8-3), the second of five relievers who followed starter Michael Barnett, pitched an inning to earn the win. The Bruins were in full control early and improved to 27-1 when scoring first. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning against Nic Schutte (8-5). He gave up a hit and issued three walks before he settled down and got back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to keep it 1-0. Dean West singled in another run in the second, and the Bruins added four more in the fourth on a safety squeeze bunt, base hit and Salgado's two-run double. Murray State ended the UCLA pitching staff's streak of 20 2/3 scoreless innings when a sliding Jonathan Hogart beat Salgado's throw to the plate on Carson Garner's drive into right field in the fifth. Before that, the Bruins hadn't allowed a run since the second inning of their super regional opener against UTSA. The Racers added a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. Consecutive RBI groundouts pulled them within 6-4. Hawk went to the mound in the ninth with a two-run lead and facing the heart of the Racers' order. He struck out Dustin Mercer, got Garner to ground out and fanned Dominic Decker to earn his eighth save.

AJ Salgado helps lift UCLA over Murray State in Men's College World Series opener
UCLA's return to the Men's College World Series started with three hours of sweaty palms in 86-degree heat and high humidity. An early lead shrunk across four innings on a muggy afternoon. Only when closer Easton Hawk struck out Murray State's Dominic Decker on a full count for the final out could the Bruins exhale. They walked off Charles Schwab Field for the first time in 12 years with a 6-4 win Saturday. Advertisement The Bruins jumped ahead early but couldn't build momentum. They loaded the bases on their first three batters but only scored after Roman Martin drew a four-pitch walk. Dean West ripped an RBI single to right field in the second. Then he got thrown out trying to get back to first after rounding the bag. In the third, Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer made an athletic catch on the warning track to rob the Bruins of a two-run hit. Read more: Why UCLA might have an edge over everyone else at the Men's College World Series Payton Brennan singled to give the Bruins runners on the corners with two outs in the third only to be spoiled by an athletic over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track by Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer. Finally, UCLA broke through in the fourth with four runs. Martin and Roch Cholowsky each drove in runs before AJ Salgado's two-run double to right field. The Bruins' first multi-run inning gave them a 6-0 lead. Advertisement That was enough behind a gritty start from junior Michael Barnett. The righty scattered three hits and four walks across 4 ⅔innings. The bullpen conceded three more runs and escaped to secure the win. UCLA will play the winner of Saturday's evening contest between Louisiana State and Arkansas on Monday.
