Stan Collymore outlines Evan Ferguson theory as Gyokeres complete Arsenal move

Evan Ferguson can follow in the footsteps of Viktor Gyokeres and become a 'marquee name' that is coveted by the top Premier League clubs. That's the verdict of former Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and England striker Stan Collymore, who has expressed his theory regarding the Ireland striker's latest move. Ferguson had been tipped long before this summer's loan move from Brighton to Roma to land a huge move to one of England's biggest clubs. Pundits were labelling him as a potential €100million player, as he made a sensational breakthrough into the Premier League with the Seagulls. After an ankle injury and an ill-fated loan move to West Ham last season, however, talk of big-money moves went quiet. Then, in stepped new Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini, and he moved quickly to bring in Ferguson on a season-long loan deal, with the option to buy him outright for €40million at the end of the season. A successful spell in Serie A, Collymore reckons, and the top Premier League teams will be sniffing around once again. He likened Ferguson's situation to the one Gyokeres faced when he was at Coventry City. The Sweden striker scored 40 goals in 97 appearances for the Championship side, before he moved to Sporting Lisbon, where his blistering strike-rate (97 goals in just 102 games) led to this summer's €64million move to Arsenal. The deal could be worth an additional €10million to Sporting in add-ons. And Collymore took to social media to share his theory on the similarities between Gyokeres and 20-year-old Ireland star Ferguson, who has already scored five goals in two pre-season friendlies within a week of his arrival at the Serie A club. He posted on X: 'The Evan Ferguson dichotomy along with Premier League clubs want to bring in marquee 'names'. Gyokeres at Cov (Coventry) wasn't a marquee name so Prem clubs can afford to wait until they are. 'Gyokeres would have had every Prem club watch him and all by the looks of it said " let's see how he does in the next couple of years. One to watch ". 'Evan Ferguson will be the same. 'Let's not take him now, poor on loan, sketchy last season at Brighton'. Prem clubs can now wait and buy a guy on loan on Rome to come good ( he's 20 FFS) and have the money to pay 40-50-60 for him.' Pep Guardiola says planned break from football after Man City could last 15 years

Pep Guardiola has reiterated his plan to take a break from football when he ends his time at Manchester City and suggested it could be for several years. Guardiola, 54, has been at City since 2016 but during last season's slump in form he ended speculation over his immediate future by signing a new contract that runs until 2027. The Catalan has previously expressed an interest in managing in international football later in his career, but has insisted he will take a break before any other role. Hablamos en exclusiva con Pep Guardiola y nos cuenta cuándo se va a retirar del fútbol. Lamentablemente, parece que va a ser pronto. — GQ España (@GQSpain) July 27, 2025 Speaking to GQ Spain, Guardiola said: 'I know that after this stage with City I'm going to stop, that's for sure. It's decided, more than decided. 'I don't know how long I'll stop for, a year, two years, three years, five, 10, 15, I don't know. But I will leave after this spell with City because I need to stop and focus on myself.' Earlier in his coaching career, Guardiola took a one-year break after leaving Barcelona and before taking charge at Bayern Munich. Last season was City's first without a trophy since Guardiola's first campaign in charge as a run of four Premier League titles – and six in seven seasons – came to a disappointing end as City were left fighting for a Champions League place before finishing third. Guardiola said it was easy with hindsight to say that City should have been quicker to refresh an ageing squad, a process which began in January and has continued this summer with the signings so far of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Sverre Nypan – with James Trafford due to follow. Pep Guardiola said he was determined to come back stronger next season (Martin Rickett/PA) But when asked how he felt about City's campaign being described as a 'failure,' Guardiola said: 'I'm delighted to have failed. 'I love failures. In this society where everything has to be perfect, where you have to post your food on Instagram… 'Oh, how good, how happy I am'. Everyday we have to prove that we're happy. Well, yes, I'm sad, I fail and I lose. So? 'Name one who doesn't do it. The important thing is to give it your all and do it well. And I haven't given up on that… Next year I'm going to do better. That's what it's all about.'
