Brisbane 2032 main stadium gets major funding boost from federal, state governments
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Queensland state officials said Thursday they had secured a deal with the federal government for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane which commits 50-50 funding for minor venues and 1.2 billion Australian dollars ($788 million) toward a new main stadium at Brisbane's Victoria Park.
The federal government is set to invest more than 3.4 billion Australian dollars ($2.23 billion) in the Games — the single largest contribution towards sporting infrastructure in Australia's history, federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said.

'It is about ensuring that when we hand the keys back after the closing ceremony, Queensland has the infrastructure it needs to build on this incredible legacy for decades to come,' King said.
The centerpiece of Brisbane 2032 is a proposed 63,000-seat stadium at the inner-city Victoria Park. Investigative works at the site have begun with geotechnical studies and soil sampling ongoing.
Brisbane 2032 chief executive Andrew Liveris welcomed the agreement and said he hopes construction will begin at major venues by the end of 2026.
'Today marks a significant shift in forward momentum following the Queensland government's announcement in March of its 2032 Delivery Plan,' Liveris said.

In May, Kirsty Coventry was in Brisbane for a three-day inspection visit before she took over as IOC president.

China Eyes More Overseas Missions for Growing Naval Fleet
China is building a new fleet of replenishment ships-capable of providing supplies to other vessels at sea-as the East Asian power's navy expands its overseas presence. Newsweek has reached out to the Chinese Defense Ministry for comment via email. China possesses over 370 naval vessels, making it the world's largest navy by hull count and surpassing its rival, the United States. Over the past year, Chinese warships have conducted missions farther from home-including in Europe and Africa, as well as around Australia in the South Pacific-challenging America's naval dominance. According to a Pentagon report, China has a "sizable force of highly capable logistical replenishment ships," which support long-distance, long-duration deployments-such as recently concluded dual aircraft carrier operations in the broader western Pacific. Since early June, photos circulated on social media indicate that China has launched and tested several newly built Type 903A replenishment ships. A number of vessels from this class-as well as their predecessor, the Type 903-are already in service. Both the Type 903 and Type 903A vessels can carry fuel oil, fresh water, cargo, and ammunition, according to open-source information. Australia-based naval analyst Alex Luck estimates that China has likely constructed an additional four Type 903A ships. The new ships were constructed at shipyards in Guangzhou and Wuhu, the analyst wrote in a January article for the specialist outlet Naval News. It remains to be seen whether the new ships are Type 903A vessels or further improved versions of this class. The Type 903/A fleet forms the backbone of China's replenishment capability, Luck told Newsweek, adding that China's doubling of this type of ship is not unreasonable, given both the growing demand and the need to build resilience for conflict scenarios. Despite drawing less attention than the larger Type 901 replenishment ships, the Type 903 ships are considered "far more crucial" to China's navy for operating across island chains in the western Pacific, as well as more expeditionary missions, the analyst explained. China's acquisition of multiple new replenishment ships indicates its seriousness in pursuing the goal of having a world class military by mid-century, Tom Shugart, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, told Newsweek. McColgan prodigy Tait sets sights on Olympics
Not only does Scottish track athlete Sarah Tait boast Eilish McColgan as one of her mentors but she also has taken one of her records. The 24-year-old broke McColgan's 12-year Scottish record in the 3000m steeplechase at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition in Oregon last month. Advertisement Her form earned her a place on the Great Britain team for the European Athletics Team Championships, where she finished second in the same event on her international debut. Now Tait, who came through at Lasswade Athletics Club but is based in the United States, has set her sights on next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and a first Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. "I went to watch some of my teammates in Paris last year and I thought it was absolutely amazing what they were doing," Tait told BBC Scotland. "I would love to be there one day, but I didn't think quite how realistic it would be and then just this year I am like: 'Do you know what, I am actually really close'. As a 13-year-old, Tait went to watch the athletics at Hampden Park when the games last visited the city in 2014. "I just can't wait to hopefully be a part of it and be part of inspiring the next generation because that was me sitting in the stands watching - so I really hope that can be me on the start line this time," she added.
