Curtis Campher: Ireland Star Becomes 1st Man To Take Five Wickets In Five Balls

NDTV10-07-2025
Ireland all-rounder Curtis Campher became the first men's professional cricketer to take five wickets in as many balls during his side Munster Reds' win over North-West Warriors in an Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy match in Dublin on Thursday. Campher, who is also part of an elite list of bowlers to take four wickets in four balls in T20 internationals, however, is not the first person to achieve this feat. That honour belongs to Zimbabwe Women all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu who took five wickets in five balls for Zimbabwe U-19 against Eagles Women in a domestic T20 tournament in 2024.
The 26-year-old Munster Reds captain and right-arm pacer took his five wickets across his second and third overs as North-West Warriors slumped from 87 for 5 to 88 all out in 13.3 overs while chasing 189.
He finished with 5 for 16 from 2.3 overs at the Pembroke Cricket Club, Sandymount, Dublin.

Jared Wilson, the first of the five wickets, was out off the penultimate delivery of the 12th over when Campher got the ball to swing in and crash into off stump. Next ball, Graham Hume was trapped lbw off another inswinger.
That put Campher on a hat-trick at the start of his next over, and it came when Andy McBrine was dismissed on the first ball of the 14th over. His next two balls got rid of No. 10 Robbie Millar (0) and No. 11 Josh Wilson (0) to complete his five wicket haul. PTI Earlier, Munster Reds had scored 188 for 7 in 20 overs after electing to bat.
Campher has played seven Tests, 43 ODIs and 61 T20Is since making debut for Ireland in 2020

Abdulla Aboobacker eyes season's best to boost Worlds hopes

CHENNAI: Triple jumper could not have asked for a better start to the season, leaping 17.19m in his first meet – Indian Open jumps competition. While he has not breached the 17m mark since, he has done enough to remain in contention for a spot at the World Championships, by winning a few competitions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Inter-State Athletics meet, beginning here on Wednesday, will allow him to have another bite at the cherry. 'I am looking to get to my season-best mark here, which will boost my confidence ahead of the World Championships. With Praveen Chithravel and other top triple jumpers competing here, I hope the competition will be tough and we push each other,' Aboobacker said after his practice session on Tuesday. The last time Aboobacker competed in Chennai was at the inter-state competition in 2022, where he came close to his personal best of 17.19m. He went on to have a great year, clinching silver at the Commonwealth Games later. Aboobacker had hoped to break new ground this season, but things did not go as planned. 'The season started with a lot of motivation. I believed I could reach 17.40m or even 17.50m, but unfortunately, it did not work out,' he added. If Aboobacker qualifies for the Worlds, it will mark his third appearance at the global extravaganza. He struggled in his previous outings, failing to reach the final on both occasions. The triple jumper said that adapting to foreign conditions, especially different tracks, is difficult. 'In India, we mainly train on synthetic tracks, but at top-level competitions like the World Championships and Olympics, they use Mondo tracks. Sprinters can adjust, but athletes in events like pole vault, triple jump, and long jump find it difficult to adapt. 'Jumping on a Mondo track is like jumping on a mat. The speed is very good, but the track is very hard. I get to train on a Mondo track for only one week before any big event, which is not enough. I have spent many years trying to prove myself at the world level and I do not want to see my hard work getting wasted in a few attempts. I have requested the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to install Mondo tracks, and I hope more tracks will be available in the future to help young athletes. '

Sreeshankar Murali, Annu Rani seeking final push to qualify for Worlds at Inter-State Athletics Championships

Before last week's World Athletics Continental Tour event in Bhubaneswar, long jumper Sreeshankar Murali had said, 'I have to go all out as I have got very few chances for World Championships qualification.' He did go all out, and secured the win with a season best jump of 8.13m. The win earned him crucial ranking points, pushing him closer to Worlds qualification. While there are those that will qualify for the marquee track and field event in Tokyo directly (by breaching a particular mark), others will get entry on the basis of rankings, the final decision of which lies with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). To qualify, Sreeshankar will have his last chance at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships, a World Athletics B Category event, starting on Wednesday in Chennai, where he will need to repeat his performance from Continental Tour to earn a spot for Tokyo as the qualification window ends on August 24. 'I started my season late, post injury, but the performance has been what I need right now. My only focus is on World Championships qualification at the moment. I need a good result like in Odisha and I will be good to go,' Sreeshankar, who is making a comeback from knee surgery after missing the Paris Olympics last year, told The Indian Express ahead of the Inter-State. The 26-year-old has played four tournaments after his return and needs one more to get on the ranking list. He has crossed the 8m mark twice (8.13m at Indian Open Bronze meet in Bhubaneswar and 8.05m at Indian Open meet in Pune). His 7.94m jump at Qosanov Memorial in Kazakhstan also earned him substantial points. World Athletics calculates an average of top five performances in the season for long jump and Sreeshankar will need to either clear the direct qualification mark of 8.27m or jump above 8.05m and secure gold – through which he will be able to reach the requisite ranking – to have a shot at the berth in Tokyo. While Annu Rani looks set to feature in her fifth World Championships after a late surgery in the season with three 60m+ throws, things will get interesting in the men's Javelin throw. 'I am happy with my performance in Odisha. It gives me confidence that I got close to a World Championship medal. Inter-State will be a good opportunity for me to keep my rhythm before Worlds,' Annu said ahead of the tournament. Currently ranked 28th in the Road to Tokyo 2025 rankings, Annu has more or less sealed her spot for the Worlds and a gold medal at Inter-State will give her more ranking points to solidify that position. In the men's Javelin, reigning World Champion Neeraj Chopra along with Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh have booked their ticket for the World Championships but India can accommodate one more competitor as Neeraj has qualified directly as the defending champion. Sachin is ranked 22nd and Yashvir is ranked 30th in the Road To Tokyo rankings and have more or less confirmed their berth. But returning from his injury, Rohit Yadav can also stake a claim for the last berth from India with a solid result. Rohit, who has a personal best of 83.40m, is placed 56th in the rankings at the moment but a 82m+ throw and gold medal at the Inter-State can get him on to the flight to Tokyo. 'I haven't seen the rankings yet but I want to improve my performance. I had a good throw in Odisha but sadly it was a foul. So, I am hopeful that I get a big throw here,' said Rohit, who has crossed 80m twice this season. The headline-maker of the Indian athletics season this year, sprinter Animesh Kujur is on course to become the first ever Indian male sprinter to run at the World Championships. The 22-year-old from Chhattisgarh has been on an ascent this year breaking both 100m and 200m national records, and winning a bronze medal at the Asian Championships. He also ran an U23 race at the prestigious Diamond League in Monaco. 'I am not sure where I will end up in the rankings quota for World Championships but it will be a great moment for me if it happens,' Kujur had said ahead of the World Athletics Continental Bronze level meet in Bhubaneswar. There are 48 berths in the men's 200m event at the World Championships and currently Animesh is placed 42nd in the list. With just one competition left for a majority of the competition all over the world before the qualification window closes on 24th, Animesh needs a gold medal finish in Chennai to seal his berth. Apart from the aforementioned athletes, National Games medallist Ankita Dhyani also has a solid chance to make it to the World Championships in the women's 3000m steeplechase. After she broke the national record in 2000m steeplechase last week, she has moved up in the rankings and a strong finish will result in her qualification with Asian Games medallist Parul Chaudhary already qualified by breaching the qualification mark of 9:18.00. (The National Inter-State Championships will be live-streamed on AFI's YouTube channel.)

The race to grab spots for the Worlds set to dominate Inter-State meet

A last-minute scramble to get berths for the Tokyo World championships will be on full display when the five-day National Inter-State athletics meet begins at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. So far, four athletes — Neeraj Chopra, Parul Choudhary (women's 3000m steeplechase), Gulveer Singh (men's 5000m), and Praveen Chitravel (men's triple jump) — have made the cut to Tokyo. And five more — Annu Rani (women's javelin), Abdulla Aboobacker (men's triple jump), Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh (all mens' javelin throw) — have a very good chance to qualify through their World rankings and provided they give a good account of themselves in the Inter-State meet, which is the final selection trial for the Worlds to be held from September 13 to 21. Just 1 day to go! 20–24 Aug 2025 | JN Stadium, Chennai The 64th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships is here! From sprints to race walks, pole vaults to relays, 5 days of thrilling action await. Stay tuned for the full schedule & updates.#IndianAthletics# — Athletics Federation of India (@afiindia) August 19, 2025 The rest of them will have to clearly make the grade through entry standards. Radhakrishnan Nair, chief coach of the Indian National team, said the total participants might not reach the tally of 28 like the previous edition in Budapest held in 2023. 'The numbers were more due to the presence of the men's relay team in the last edition. This time, we have no hope of qualifying in the relays and moreover injuries to Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), Jyoti Yarraji (women's 100mH) and to a few others have not helped our cause,' said Nair to mediapersons. Praveen Chitravel said though he has already qualified, he wants to do something special in his home state. 'I don't know how much I'll do. Some of my friends and relatives from the districts will come to watch me,' he said.
