Max Verstappen F1 future uncertain as rumours swirl he will leave Red Bull for Mercedes
Verstappen has won the previous four drivers' championships, but his hopes of a record-equalling fifth consecutive title appear to be a long shot as McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris continue to set the pace in 2025.
Despite having a contract until 2028, rumours have intensified over several weeks that the Dutchman could leave Red Bull.
Mercedes appears to be the front runner to snag Verstappen's signature, while Aston Martin has also been rumoured to have tried to lure the world champion.
2009 world champion Jenson Button, speaking with UK broadcaster Sky Sports, said Verstappen holds all the aces, but making the right choice is not so simple.
"The good thing that Max has in his favour is he's probably the best racing driver that's ever raced in a Formula 1 car, my view," Button said.
"So everyone wants him, so it's a nice position to be in.
"But it's also tricky to really pick and choose who is going to be competitive next year."
F1 will have new technical regulations starting from 2026.
The new rules mean teams will be building brand new cars for the 2026 season.
Red Bull nailed the most recent regulation change in 2022, leading to historical dominance in 2022 and 2023.
Before that, the regulation change in 2014 led to an era of Mercedes dominance.
Mercedes won all eight constructors' championships during that regulation cycle from 2014-2021, and their drivers won seven of the eight drivers' championships.
Verstappen's last-lap heroics in Abu Dhabi 2021 denied Hamilton the championship and Mercedes the clean sweep of all 16 titles.
Despite Verstappen winning two grands prix this season, Red Bull has underperformed.
The team are fourth in the constructors' championship, with Verstappen accounting for 155 of the team's 162 points.
Button said a major factor that Verstappen could be weighing up is which powertrain supplier he wants to drive for.
Mercedes has the best-performing powertrain in 2025.
A Mercedes-powered car has won nine of the 11 grands prix this season, with McLaren accounting for eight of those wins.
"I think that Red Bull is a team that has given him so much over the years, and this car really suits his driving style," Button said.
"Everyone's talking about power units. The power unit of the Mercedes seems to be very strong compared to everything else, so he [Max] wants to be in a Mercedes.
"But can they deliver the car for him that suits his style? Who knows."
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner dismissed the rumours during last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix.
Horner described the rumour mill as "a lot of noise", while affirming Verstappen is still contracted with Red Bull.
"We are very clear with the contract we have with Max until 2028. Anything is entirely speculative that has been said. We tend to not pay too much attention to it," Horner told Sky Sports.
"The situation with Max — we know clearly where we are at, as does Max. Everything is subject to noise, and obviously, within the contract remains confidential to the two parties."
Current Mercedes drivers George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli are out of contract at the end of this season.
Russell has been outspoken in his wish to sign a new contract with Mercedes.
The Brit has four grand prix victories since joining the team in 2022.

Wimbledon live: De Minaur, Vukic, fly Aussie flag, Djoker battles injury
The Aussie Alexes will fly the flag on day four at Wimbledon, as Alex de Minaur and Aleksander Vukic vie for a third-round berth. Novak Djokovic is also in action, as he takes on one of the few men he has losing record against - British wildcard Dan Evans. De Minaur will take on Frenchman Arthur Cazaux, the man who dumped fellow Aussie Adam Walton in five sets, at 8pm (AEST). De Minaur overcame Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round, claiming a straight sets victory to progress. Aleksander Vukic faces the toughest task of all, taking on No.1 seed Jannik Sinner. Meanwhile, Djokovic struggled with stomach issues in his four-set win in the first round against Frenchman Alexandre Muller before recovering strongly, praising 'miracle pills'. He is unlikely to lose sleep over the match-up with the 154th-ranked Briton, who, at 35, is three years younger than him, but he is wary of his opponent's experience on grass and the home support. 'It's a good test for both of us,' said Djokovic. 'I think he's been picking his form up, as well. I think his rankings are not doing him justice at the moment. He deserves to be ranked higher. Defending champion Barbor Krejcikova is in action against Caroline Dolehide, while there's a slew of doubles matches as well.

Tyson Fury gets green light from his wife to come out of retirement
Tyson Fury could confirm his Anthony Joshua comeback as early as next week. The 35-year-old Gypsy King hung up his gloves for the umpteenth time after his second consecutive loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December. But Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed his star attraction is waiting by the phone for a call and Fury's wife Paris – who lost a baby boy six months into her 2024 pregnancy – has given her man the green light to return. UFC 318: Holloway vs Poirier 3 | SUN 20 JULY 12PM AEST | One of the most iconic careers in MMA history will come to a close, as UFC veteran Dustin Poirier makes his final walk to the Octagon for a trilogy with current BMF Champion Max Holloway. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. The undisputed heavyweight decider between Ukraine's unbeaten WBC, WBA and WBO champ Usyk and London's IBF holder Daniel Dubois is taking place at Wembley on July 19. After that four-belt rematch, The Sun reports Fury will be able to weigh up his options and cherry pick his opponent. Speaking at the latest mega-money IBA show in Turkey, Fury revealed: 'Although AJ has been a rival of mine for 10 years, he has been a fantastic advocate for British boxing and has played the game well. 'I wouldn't say I hold all the power over him but if he's only sitting there and waiting for me to come, he could be waiting a long time. 'He might be f***ing 60 by the time I decide I want him – or it might be next week. 'I am looking forward to contemplating the idea of returning. 'I am taking it all on board and I will make a decision in the forthcoming few months.' One thing that could still stand in the way of the biggest all-English fight in British boxing history is Fury's desire for a hometown crack at Usyk, after two desert defeats. 'The all-British fight with Joshua will be big and if we both go to our grave – without having fought each other – it would be a travesty for British boxing,' Fury said. 'But I feel like, what I really want is revenge. 'But I only want to fight Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley, in front of 100,000 people, and lift all the belts. That would be my dream. 'My second dream would be that massive fight with Anthony Joshua. 'I am a prize fighter first and foremost. So, if the money is right, then we can do a deal. If the money is right then it's a deal.' Fury seemed to announce his latest retirement in a hasty rage, from the front seat of his ten-year-old Land Rover Defender on his Morecambe driveway. Nobody expected it to last long and he admitted the itch never showed any sign of leaving him in peace. The 205cm veteran explained: 'Retirement is not easy to handle, every day I wake up and start shadow boxing and inside I want to fight. 'I will never ever get over that because I have been born and bred to do what I do – I mean did! 'It's hard to let it go when it's something I enjoy. It's hard, f***ing hard man. It's hard to walk away from it. 'I have had offers and Paris has said she will support me and that has made me smile. 'It might be because she is sick of me being at home with her, or it's because she is my ride-or-die, we're Bonnie and Clyde.' Fury's childhood sweetheart Paris lost their baby in the build-up to the first Usyk loss in May 2024. Incredibly the mother of seven hid the devastating news from her man so he could focus on the fight. And Fury confirmed that heartbreaking scenario made this latest – albeit predictably brief hiatus – an easy one to enjoy. 'Yes it made retirement a lot easier,' he said. 'The hardest thing for me around that first Usyk fight was that I could not be there, for the person who has been there the most for me in my life, when she needed me the most. 'That was the toughest thing.' Usyk will defend his undisputed heavyweight titles against Dubois, with the fight a rematch of their 2023 bout, where Usyk defeated the Brit by TKO.
