Former NFL great John Elway suffers loss when friend dies from golf cart fall
April 30 (UPI) -- Former sports agent Jeff Sperbeck has died after succumbing to a traumatic brain injury suffered when he fell from a golf cart driven by Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.
Sperbeck, 62, and Elway, 64, had left a party at The Madison Club in La Quinta, Calif., when the former agent and friend of Elway's fell and struck his head on asphalt, ESPN reported.
A Riverside County coroner declared Sperbeck's death at 1:10 a.m. PDT on Wednesday at the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
Sperbeck was a resident of San Clemente, Calif., and suffered the head injury at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
He was sitting in the golf cart's passenger seat when he fell. He was on life support before dying.
TMZ reported Sperbeck was kept on life support long enough to harvest his donated organs, according to People.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office is investigating the matter, but there is no indication of negligence by Elway.
Sperbeck was Elway's agent during his 16-year pro career with the Denver Broncos.
Elway also is the former Broncos general manager and was a business partner with Sperbeck.

June 13 (UPI) -- Shaquille O'Neal, the retired basketball star and NBA analyst, has agreed to pay $1.8 million to settle claims that he misled investors by promoting the now-bankrupt crypto exchange FTX. O'Neal, who urged fans to trust the platform in a commercial, won't admit wrongdoing. He reportedly earned much less to make the commercial that aired in June 2022: around $750,000, Front Office Sports reported. The settlement Monday marks one of the first high-profile settlements over FTX's collapse, CNBC reported. The civil case in Miami federal court. O'Neal must pay the amount within 30 days. An initial settlement was reached in November. In the class-action suit, O'Neal is accused of presenting FTX as a trustworthy and legitimate investment tool while allegedly helping drive the adoption of unregistered securities. Eligible are users who deposited money into FTX or held its proprietary token, FTT, between May 2019 and late 2022. O'Neal's $1.8 million payout will cover all legal fees, notice and administration costs, and payouts to those eligible. Also, he is released from future liability and is barred from seeking reimbursement from the FTX bankruptcy estate. "We are pleased to have this matter behind us," O'Neal's attorney said in a statement. In 2022, O'Neal told CNBC he "was just a paid spokesperson for a commercial." At the time he said he didn't know much about crypto currency. "I don't understand it, so I will probably stay away from it until I get a full understanding of what it is," he told CNBS. "From my experience, it is too good to be true." Other FTX endorsers, including Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen and Steph Curry, had claims against them largely dismissed. FTX, a company in the Bahamas, was the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange three years ago but it racked up billions of dollars or losses and filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 11, 2022. Founder Sam Bankman-Fried isserving a 25-year prison sentence for seven counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the FTX collapse. New Details Emerge Regarding Cause of Death for Former Yankee Brett Gardner's Son
Two months after the sudden death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, questions remain. Authorities are investigating what really happened in the Costa Rican resort where he was found unresponsive. ESPN reported that the case remains open as they continue investigating whether the teen's death will ultimately be ruled a homicide. Gardner died on March 21 while on vacation with his family at the Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Quepos. Initially, Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department believed the cause of death to be accidental. By early April, officials pointed to carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause. But that hasn't closed the case.A spokesperson for the Quepos and Parrita branch of the Costa Rican prosecutor's office confirmed the investigation is ongoing, to determine whether the death was natural or criminal. Sharon Hernandez Coto told the outlet, 'It is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed.' She also clarified that every case is handled individually, and there's no official timetable for reaching a conclusion. The Gardner family, who fell ill along with Miller during the trip, has not commented since releasing a statement through the Yankees on March 23. A week after Miller's death, investigators tested the room and found high levels of carbon monoxide. The autopsy ruled out asphyxiation. The case has now shifted to the prosecutor's office, which has a 33-page manual outlining Costa Rica's legal procedures. Investigators are still in the early stages, gathering evidence and completing tests before determining whether to file formal charges or close the case. Miller Gardner, who played high school football in South Carolina, wore the same No. 11 jersey as his father, a 14-season veteran and key member of the Yankees' 2009 World Series championship team.
