John Elway golf cart accident: Coroner rules on death of agent
John Elway golf cart accident: Coroner rules on death of agent The Riverside County Coroner has determined that the death of a man who fell from a golf cart driven by former star NFL quarterback John Elway was accidental, the county sheriff's department said Friday. The coroner also said that it has determined that Jeffrey Sperbeck's death was the result of "blunt head trauma." The mode of death, which describes how the injury occurred, was "passenger fell from a golf cart." The department announced the results of the coroner's investigation into Sperbeck's death in a post on the social media site X on Friday, May 9. A department spokesperson told The Desert Sun Friday that the investigation into Sperbeck's death remains ongoing. The agency tweeted about the status of the investigation on May 2, saying "at this point there is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a tragic incident." That same day, Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post newspaper that no evidence had been found so far indicating that Elway had been driving the golf cart while drunk. Sperbeck's fall occurred at around 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at The Madison Club in La Quinta. TMZ reported that Sperbeck, who has been described as Elway's close friend, business partner and former agent, the quarterback and their spouses were at the Madison Club for a party being held to coincide with the Stagecoach Music Festival. TMZ reported that Sperbeck suddenly fell off a cart, hit his head and was brought to a hospital. The 62-year-old man died from his injuries on April 30 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, according to a coroner's report. Although Sperbeck's fall was on a Saturday, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department was not notified until the following Monday, April 28. While the sheriff's department has opened an investigation into the crash, Bianco told The Denver Post on May 2 that there was 'nothing that we have found' to indicate law enforcement should've been involved sooner. Bianco said that the investigation into Sperbeck's death would likely be "relatively short" and involve review of surveillance footage and witness testimony. He said that so far there had been no discrepancies in witnesses' statements. What is Madison Club La Quinta? New Details Emerge In Fatal Golf Cart Crash Involving NFL Legend John Elway: Report
New details have emerged in a golf cart crash that killed the friend and longtime agent of former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. Jeff Sperbeck, 62, died last week after he fell from a golf cart that was reportedly being driven by Elway. A new report from Denver's NBC affiliate 9News puts together a timeline of the tragic events, and sources told the station that Elway was not impaired when he was driving. On April 26, Sperbeck and Elway were in La Quinta, California, with a group of approximately 10 to 15 family members and friends. After leaving an event at The Madison Club, the group took three or four golf carts to make the trip to Elway's house, which was 'a short ride of no more than a quarter mile,' according to the 9News report. Elway was reportedly driving a single-bench cart behind the other carts with his girlfriend and Sperbeck's wife seated next to him. Sperbeck had decided to sit in the back of the cart so his wife could sit in the front, sources told the network. Sources told 9News that no one was drunk, and it had been a smooth ride until Sperbeck fell back and immediately hit his head. Elway called 911, according to the report. Sperbeck died four days later from his head injury after being taken off life support. Sperbeck and Elway worked together starting in the '90s, with Elway and the Broncos winning the Super Bowl in 1998 and 1999. Following his football career, Sperbeck and Elway remained friends and formed a wine company together in 2013 called 7Cellars. In a statement last week, Elway said he was 'absolutely devastated and heartbroken' over the loss of his friend. 'There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me,' Elway added. In a statement on Friday, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office said the investigation is 'ongoing' but added that 'there is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a tragic accident.'

Death of John Elway agent Jeff Sperbeck caused by 'blunt head trauma' and ruled an accident
The agent for Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway was killed in an "accident," Southern California investigators said Friday, nearly two weeks after a tragic golf cart fall. Jeffrey Sperbeck's death was caused by 'blunt head trauma," according to a statement from the Riverside Sheriff's Coroner Bureau statement, which also labeled the fatality an "accident." The "mode of death" for the 62-year-old Sperbeck was described as: 'Passenger fell from golf cart.' The sheriff's department on Friday did not elaborate on any potential criminal responsibility. So it wasn't clear prosecution would be recommended for the April 26 crash at the Madison Club, a private golf resort community in La Quinta near Palm Springs where Elway owns a home. But Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco strongly hinted last week this case wouldn't end in a criminal referral, saying that "so far it appears to be just a tragic accident.' A source familiar with the details of the incident confirmed to NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver that Elway, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Broncos and Hall of Fame member, was driving the golf cart. A representative of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, which would have final say on any potential charges, couldn't be immediately reached for comment late Friday afternoon. Sperbeck also once represented New York Jets assistant coach Greg Knapp, who died on July 22, 2021 after a bicycle crash near San Francisco. Knapp, 58, was an avid cyclist and he suffered fatal injuries when a motorist swerved into the bike lane and hit him in San Ramon, Sperbeck said at the time.

Details Emerge About John Elway's Golf Cart Crash That Killed His Friend Jeff Sperbeck: Report
New details have emerged in John Elway's fatal golf cart crash that killed his friend, Jeff Sperbeck. CBS affiliate 9 News reported on Tuesday, May 6, that Elway, 64, left a private function at Madison Club in La Quinta with Sperbeck, Sperbeck's wife Cori, Elway's girlfriend, son Jack and additional friends on April 26. The group reportedly had a caravan of three or four golf carts designated to transport around 10 to 15 people a quarter-mile to Elway's house at the private golf resort's community. Jack had a group with him and rode in a cart ahead of Elway. In addition to Elway himself, his cart was reportedly transporting his girlfriend, Sperbeck, Cori and The Challenge star Johnny Bananas. Sperbeck told his wife to sit up front with Elway and Elway's girlfriend while he rode in the back with Bananas, 42, per the outlet. Sperbeck allegedly fell off the cart while Elway was driving. Multiple sources told the outlet that there was 'no swerving or horseplay' and 'no one was drunk.' The golf cart also allegedly did not hit anything. Jeff Sperbeck's Family Breaks Silence After He Dies in Golf Cart Accident: 'Unimaginable Loss' It was previously reported that Elway, Sperbeck and their group had attended the nearby Stagecoach music festival that day. However, 9 News reported that the group went the previous day and opted not to go the following day due to 'inclement weather.' News broke on April 30 that Sperbeck died as the result of a traumatic head injury as a result of the accident. It was later revealed that Elway called 911 after Sperbeck hit his head. When paramedics arrived on the scene, Sperbeck was reportedly still breathing and was transported to the hospital. Sperbeck was placed on life support before succumbing to his injuries days later. Following the news of Sperbeck's passing, Elway released a statement mourning the death of his friend and former manager. Johnny Bananas Shares Video of Golf Cart Ride Amid Reports He Was Present During John Elway's Crash 'I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,' Elway said. 'There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.' Law enforcement subsequently opened an investigation. On Friday, May 2, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post that 'nothing that we have found' indicated law enforcement needed to be involved. 'This appears to be a horrific accident,' Bianco said. 'And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people – well, a couple of them – happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.'
