John Elway won't be charged in golf cart incident that killed close friend Jeff Sperbeck
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed what he told the Times two months ago: His department's investigation into the golf cart incident that led to the death of the Hall of Fame quarterback's close friend Jeff Sperbeck found nothing criminal. Bianco described it as a tragic accident.
Bianco said in May that it appeared 'nothing nefarious' happened when Sperbeck fell from a moving golf cart that Elway was driving in the Madison Club community of La Quinta on April 26 about 6:50 p.m. The 62-year-old San Clemente resident hit his head and was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. April 30 at Desert Regional Medical Center, according to the Sheriff's Office.
'We have not learned anything that would indicate that this is anything other than a tragic accident,' Bianco told the Times in a phone interview May 2.
Bianco told Denver TV station 9NEWS that the investigation has concluded and that Elway will not be charged.
Elway, Sperbeck and their wives were in the Coachella Valley to attend the Stagecoach country music festival. Sperbeck was standing in the back of the cart when he fell off and hit his head on the asphalt, Bianco said.
The cart was designed for two to four people, according to Bianco. Five people including Sperbeck, Elway and their wives were in it at the time of the incident.
On April 30, Elway said in a statement that 'there are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.
'I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,' Elway stated. 'Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.'
Sperbeck represented more than 100 NFL players — including Elway beginning in 1990 — in 30 years as an agent and business advisor. Sperbeck and Elway later founded 7Cellars winery.
Sperbeck attended Jesuit High School in Sacramento and played quarterback at Sacramento City College in 1981 and 1982 before transferring to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is survived by his wife, Cori, three children he shared with his first wife, Anne — Carly, 33, Samantha, 31, and Jackson, 27 — and granddaughters Josie and Bo.
Elway starred at Granada Hills High and Stanford before playing 16 seasons for the Denver Broncos, leading the team to five Super Bowls. The Broncos won the Super Bowl in Elway's last two seasons, 1997 and 1998. He later served as the team's general manager and executive vice president.

Miss United States accuses GOP Rep. Cory Mills of threatening to release explicit videos of her
A Florida Republican official and beauty pageant title-holder has accused Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) of threatening to release explicit videos of her after their romantic relationship ended earlier this year, according to a police incident report. Lindsey Langston, who was crowned Miss United States 2024 and was elected as a Republican state committeewoman last year, made the allegations in an interview with the Columbia County, Fla., Sheriff's Office on July 14. Mills told The Hill in a statement that the claims 'are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions.' He has not been charged with a crime. According to the police incident report, Langston, 25, began a romantic relationship with Mills, 45, in November 2021 and moved into his house in Florida after he told her his divorce was finalized in May 2024. In February 2025, Langston ended the relationship after she saw news reports that police were investigating a physical altercation between Mills and another woman in his Washington, D.C. residence. Both Mills and the alleged victim later denied that a physical altercation took place. 'Lindsey confronted Cory about the woman, to which Cory told her he was not in a romantic relationship with her and the press fabricated the story,' the police incident report said. 'Lindsey then found a social media account for the other woman and saw posted photos of her with Cory.' After the break-up, 'Cory has contacted Lindsey numerous times on numerous different accounts threatening to release nude images and videos of her, to include recorded videos of her and Cory engaging in sexual acts,' the incident report said. Mills also sent messages threatening to harm men that Langston dated in the future, she told police. The last message Mills sent Langston — who was crowned Miss United States on Oct. 8, 2024 — before the report on June 12 was: 'I hope you hold your crown until the end.' The allegations and incident report were first reported by Drop Site News and Blaze News. Columbia County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Steven Khachigan told The Hill that the report was forwarded to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for further review. The FDLE did not immediately return The Hill's request for comment. Before speaking to police, Langston consulted Anthony Sabatini, a former Florida state representative who ran in the Republican primary against Mills for his congressional seat in 2022, for legal advice, Sabatini told The Hill. In a statement to The Hill, Mills took aim at Sabatini. 'Anthony Sabatini is weaponizing the legal system to launch a political attack against the man who beat him in the primary, using his corporate legal office to push a narrative built on lies and flawed legal arguments – all to score political headlines,' Mills said. 'We have not been made aware of any report or allegations from law enforcement or the alleged complainant,' Mills continued. 'These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions. I have always conducted myself with integrity, both personally and in service to Florida's 7th District. 'Out of respect for the legal process, I won't comment further at this time. My team and I will fully cooperate to ensure the truth is made clear. I remain focused on serving my constituents and advancing America First policies. I appreciate your understanding as we deal with this private matter and your support during time,' Mills said. Sabatini in response pointed to screenshots of messages allegedly sent by Mills to Langston, which have been posted on social media. 'Get me his number and I can send him videos. Take care,' Mills allegedly said in one message. 'Let him put his actions behind his mouth. I can send him a few videos of you as well. Oh, I still have them,' Mills allegedly said in other messages. Sabatini told The Hill that a restraining order for Langston against Mills is pending.

Clay County sheriff: 14-year-old shoots and kills his parents and waits at a church
A 14-year-old Middleburg boy shot and killed his parents and walked to a church where he waited for deputies, Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook announced early Aug. 4. She said Trevor Lee called 911 shortly after midnight and advised what he had done and that he was waiting at a church about a mile away. The Sheriff's Office found him there and his parents, 44-year-old David K. Lee and 45-year-old Brandi L. Smith, dead at their home in the area of Silver Point and County Road 220 in Middleburg. Cook said it stemmed from a domestic argument the night before and the firearm was believed to be his parents'. The gun was recovered at the home, where no one else was present. She said they're looking into his mental health history and the family's background. Court records show the couple only had some traffic tickets and that they rented the home in the 1800 block of Silver Point. The Times-Union has requested the incident report, 911 call and number of calls for service to the home. 'Trevor isn't a bad person; he made some bad decisions, and he will suffer the consequences, but that's not all he was,' he said. 'He was a great friend, great brother, great son. And I'm not going to say Trevor isn't my best friend anymore, because the Trevor that did this. I don't know that Trevor, and the Trevor that I knew, and all of our friends knew, I will continue to be friends with him, and I pray that the Trevor that did this died last night.' Kyree's mother said backed that up with another post along with several photos of the boys. "In the blink of an eye my baby lost his best friend and his second parents!" Sheree said. "The last thing she said to me was 'you know we love Kyree like he was our own!' And i knew it to be true! No matter how the news paint him or what the commentators say, HE WAS A GOOD KID, he IS a good kid! Praying for his mentality, praying for the family and praying for my son as he processes this!
