Heartbreaking update on John Elway after freak golf cart crash that killed his agent and friend Jeff Sperbeck
The Denver Broncos legend Elway, a two-time Super Bowl winner, was driving the golf cart that the 62-year-old Sperbeck fell from, sustaining a fatal head injury at a luxury golf course in California in April.
Earlier this week, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office ruled that Sperbeck's death was an accident and that Elway will not face any criminal charges. The tragic incident occurred at the exclusive, members-only golf course in La Quinta.
And now, a source close to Elway has revealed that the 65-year-old is in a dark place three months on from his friend's death.
'John is not coping well with the loss and the accident. He has been really upset and withdrawn,' a source was quoted as saying to Page Six.
'He is very down. He is not his upbeat, usual self.'
The publication added that the source says Elway, usually a 'man about town', is 'no longer social' since the incident.
A lawyer for Elway told Page Six about the ruling clearing him of any criminal wrongdoing: 'This has been a terrible situation for everybody. We always knew that John had done nothing wrong, however, that does not lessen the sadness.'
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco spoke to 9News in Denver about the ruling that Sperbeck's death was an accident, saying: 'I've looked at video 100 times and there's no explanation as to why he fell off, he just fell off.
'We've talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal, it was what we've been saying all along that this was a tragic accident.'
Sperbeck had been Elway's agent since 1990 and the two had collaborated on business ventures outside of football, too.
At the time of his death, Elway said in a statement: 'I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck.
'There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.
'My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff's wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him.
'Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.'
During his time in the NFL, quarterback Elway spent the entirety of his 16-year career with the Broncos, retiring from the sport in 1999.
He went out on a high, calling it a day after winning back-to-back Super Bowls.
Elway and the Broncos beat the Green Bay Packers in 1998 and followed it up 12 months later with victory against Atlanta Falcons.

Then there's this: Thankfully, no one was killed as a result of Rice's foolish decision. No, it never should have happened. You'd think he would have known better than put it all on the line as he clocked 119 miles an hour in the Lamborghini that caused a six-car collision - then cowardly walked away from the scene of the wreckage. Yet it did happen, leaving Rice - who has reportedly settled civil cases for at least $1 million - to deal with his personal wreckage. When someone asked about the lesson he's learned, Rice said: "It's how valuable any opportunity is, any moment is. "This right here, us being able to be on the field coached by Coach (Andy) Reid and have such a great quarterback (Patrick Mahomes) is honestly a gift, it's a blessing." Here's to hoping that Rice, drafted in the second round from Southern Methodist in 2023, sees this way beyond football terms. No, none of us are perfect. Yet Rice, with a second chance to build on his promising start of an NFL career - he posted the second-most receiving yards (262) by a rookie in playoff history - is now a walking example of what not to do. And part of the deal for Rice will be the challenge to repair his reputation, which will take time and action. In the meantime, he's the football player going through the rigors of training camp while under the cloud of uncertainty. Based on the league's history, now that Rice's legal case is resolved, a likely suspension would come before the Chiefs open the season with a game in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5 against the AFC West division rival Los Angeles Chargers. I asked Rice how he's processing the possibility of a suspension. "Honestly, it's still in the works," he said. "My legal team is handling that. All I can do is focus on what I can control right now and that's me doing what I do best right here on the field." Apparently, Rice has picked up the pace from where he left off last season, when he suffered the torn LCL in Week 4. At the time of the injury, Rice was one of the NFL's leading receivers with 24 receptions for 288 yards and 2 TDs. He declares himself 100% and physically even better than his pre-injury form. "I feel 100%," he said. "I'm excited to be back out here with the guys. I'm kind of, basically, back where I left off at. So, the one thing is to be able to be back on the field to continue to do what I do." The coach vouched for that. "He's done a nice job off the field, he's doing a nice job on the field," Reid said after Friday's practice. "You learn from your mistakes; that's the important part. So, all of that. LA Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman faces felony charge after 5 weapons found during traffic stop
An NFL veteran is facing a felony charge after he was found with five weapons in his car, police said. Denzel Perryman, a linebacker with the LA Chargers, was arrested around 9.30pm Friday in Inglewood by Los Angeles-area deputies after a traffic stop. He was described as 'extremely cooperative with deputies throughout the investigation,' according to USA Today. 'NFL player, Denzel Perryman, was arrested by South Los Angeles Station deputies on Friday, August 1, 2025,' according to a police statement reported by the outlet. 'Deputies conducted a traffic stop of Mr Perryman's vehicle for vehicle code violations. During their investigation, Mr Perryman was arrested for multiple weapons violations.' 'We are aware of a matter involving Denzel and are gathering information,' a Chargers spokesperson told the Daily Mail. According to TMZ, Perryman is still in jail and expected in court on Tuesday. 'We are aware of the recent reports regarding Denzel Perryman's arrest in Los Angeles. At this time, we are still gathering facts and will fully cooperate with the process,' his agent, Ron Butler, told NFL Network. 'Denzel is a respected veteran in the NFL and a dedicated father, teammate, and professional. 'While we do not take this situation lightly, we remain confident that the matter will be resolved fairly and in accordance with the law. Perryman has been in the NFL since 2015 and is now in his second stint with the Chargers after the team drafted him a decade ago. The 32-year-old played in San Diego and Los Angeles from 2015 to 2020 before bouncing around the league with the Texans and Raiders before ending up back with the Chargers before the start of last season. Perryman has one Pro Bowl appearance in his career, in 2021 with Las Vegas. That season, Perryman had 154 total tackles in his 15 games played. The Chargers are looking to build on a playoff appearance last season in their second year with Harbaugh as their head coach.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed to The Athletic that Perryman remained in jail Saturday morning. Perryman, 32, is entering the second season of his second stint (also 2015-20) with the Chargers. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 with a career-high 154 tackles for the Raiders. Perryman signed a one-year, $2.655 million contract with the Chargers for the 2025 season and was projected to be a starter.
