Dundee's talisman: Numbers behind Simon Murray's April
Simon Murray has had quite a week after his nomination for PFA Scotland Player of the Year was followed up by April's Premiership Player of the Month award.
The Dundee striker is in fine form as the season comes to a close.
Eight goals in the last eight league matches for Murray has seen the Dark Blues pull themselves out of the bottom two ahead of the weekend clash with Motherwell.
Just how good has Murray's April been? Courier Sport runs the numbers.
Murray ran himself into the ground against St Mirren at the start of the month, eventually being replaced after 89 minutes.
He played the full 90 in the following two matches against Hibs and Hearts.
As well as conducting Dundee fans in the stands, Murray has led the way in attacking stats.
Against St Mirren, the Dark Blues had six shots on goal – four of them came from Murray.
He had just three touches in the opposition area, all three of them first-time shots.
His xG (the likelihood of a shot being scored) alone was 0.56 compared to Dundee's total 0.65.
The Dee were well-beaten at Hibs overall. Murray had one touch in the Hibs box, resulting in a shot on target.
Against Hearts he was far busier. At Tynecastle he has seven touches in the home box, resulting in two shots with one of those on target.
His xG that day was only 0.15 (compared to Hearts' entire team xG of 1.46) but evidently that's all he needs.
In the three games Dundee had 19 shots with six on target. Four of those on target were from Murray himself from only seven efforts meaning 66% of dark blue shots on target in April came from the striker.
Across the entire month, Murray's xG was just 0.74. That means the expectation for the average player would be fewer than one goal from the chances that fell his way.
Murray didn't score fewer than one, he grabbed three.
Dundee had three matches in April, beating St Mirren and Hearts but losing to Hibs.
In those games they scored three times. Simon Murray scored all three.
Those three goals were more than any other Premiership player managed in April.
Nicolas Kuhn, Adam Idah, Reo Hatate and Kieron Bowie all grabbed two but nobody could match Dundee's talisman.
Murray's double saw the Dark Blues grab a priceless 2-0 home win over St Mirren.
The first he latched onto a loose ball in the area before firing low and hard beyond the goalkeeper.
The second was an opportunistic long-range strike after goalie Zach Hemming hit the striker with his clearance, Murray's 40-yard effort finding the corner.
Hibs was an off-day for the team and despite having Dundee's best chance of the game, Murray couldn't find the net against his old side.
He did, though, get back to scoring ways in the capital last weekend. Showing striker's instinct, Murray was in the right place at the right time to fire in the only goal of a 1-0 win at Hearts.
That leaves Murray level at the top of the Premiership scoring charts with 16 goals from 34 appearances.
His xG across the season is 11.3, slightly less than Daizen Maeda (11.8) who also has 16 Premiership goals this season.
Dundee's star striker is shining bright – can he be just as sparkling in May?

The Easter Road side have already signed midfielder Jamie McGrath and goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger ahead of Europa League qualifiers next month. David Gray's side will soon return to pre season training ahead of those clashes with the opponents to be determined next week. In the meantime, here are some of the latest transfer headlines with Hibs flavourings. Ex striker returns to Premiership Former Hibs striker Brian Graham is back in the Premiership after joining Falkirk. The veteran ended the season as player-manager at Partick Thistle but after publicly declaring he'd find it difficult to return to their changing room if he weren't to get the gig full time, the head coach role went to Mark Wilson, after Graham rejected it. He now moves to newly-promoted Falkirk to fully focus on playing. He said: 'I'm a young manager as well, but I wanted to take a step back and concentrate on my football this year. I want to get a bit of family life back, some more free time and I'm looking forward to that. This is an opportunity for myself to get back into the Premiership. Going to the bigger stadiums is really special, particularly as you get a bit older. I've experienced it, but those feelings never go away when you're going to play at the best grounds in the country. That is another reason why I wanted to move here to Falkirk." Boss John McGlynn said: 'Brian Graham is someone both myself and Paul have worked with before having signed him for Raith Rovers from Morton back in 2011, I've got to say he's had an amazing career and it's a credit to him and the way he's look after himself that he's still one of the hardest working strikers going about. His stats are very impressive scoring fifteen Championship goals and twenty-one goals in all competitions, he has the natural instincts of a top striker, he's in the right place at the right time, he knows the position inside out, with the number of crosses we put in the box I'm sure there's plenty more goals to come. Marseille namedrop Hibs in signing announcement Ligue 1 heavyweight Marseille have made mention of Hibs after signing CJ Egan-Riley from Burnley. He leaves Turf Moor after his contract expiring, spending a spell on loan at Easter Road as he developed. A statement reads: 'Olympique de Marseille is delighted to announce the signing of Conrad Jaden Egan-Riley. The 22-year-old English Under-21 international defender has joined the club after successfully completing his medical. Born in Manchester, CJ Egan-Riley came through the ranks at Manchester City, progressing through all of the youth teams. A right-footed central defender, he made his professional debut in an English League Cup match in September 2021, at just 18 years old. A few months later, he earned his first start in the Champions League under Pep Guardiola, against Sporting CP in March 2022, before being signed by Burnley FC. 'He was then loaned out, first to Scottish Premiership side Hibernian FC, and then to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie. He returned to Burnley for the 2024/2025 season, which proved to be a breakout year - playing in almost every match (41 appearances) as part of a defence that conceded just 16 goals across 46 games. Solid and composed in build-up play, the powerful 22-year-old English defender was a key figure in Burnley's historic campaign, which ended with a second-place finish and promotion to the Premier League.' The youngster had previously spent some time out on loan at Meadowbank and was one of the young players to leave Leith at the end of last season alongside Reuben McAllister, Murray Aiken plus Kyle McClelland. Zaid joined Hibs September 2021 after working with the Hanlon Stevenson Foundation and then going on trial ahead of gaining a pro deal. He was an impressive performer in the UEFA Youth League before his Edinburgh City loan stints alongside time at Annan Athletic and Civil Service Strollers. The Citizens said: 'He's here to stay. Edinburgh City are delighted to announce the signing of attacker Malik Zaid.'

Prem boss says yellow card an 'embarrassment' as duo denied perfect ending
Leicester Tigers boss Michael Cheika took aim at the referee after coming up short in the Premiership final as he declared Dan Cole's yellow card an "embarrassment" Leicester Tigers boss Michael Cheika claimed it is "an embarrassment to the game" that Dan Cole received a yellow card in the Premiership final - which Bath edged at Twickenham. The Midlands outfit were looking to end their era on a high. Head coach Cheika is leaving whilst club legends Cole and Ben Youngs were both playing their last ever games after trophy-laden periods with the Welford Road outfit. Both appeared from the replacement bench, but Cole was yellow carded and sent to the sin bin for the final 10 minutes as his career ended on a low. He attempted to charge down Finn Russell but made contact with the Bath fly-half and was penalised by referee Karl Dickson. Cheika bemoaned the performance of the referee, claiming they "got nothing back" despite their perceived dominance a scrum time. the Leicester boss was also stunned that Cole received his yellow and stated that rugby will be embarrassed by such decisions. The Australian told TNT Sports: "I thought we got nothing back from the referee at all and we kept on coming back and turning up. We scored three tries to two, that tells you something. I'm super proud of the players. '[I was] just upset with the decisions on the field. The scrum we were dominating – obvious ones, not 50-50s. The scrum we were dominating completely. A couple of head knocks, a couple of balls where we could have got penalties there easily. [We had] two men in the bin, [and] the second one [was] for nothing, really. It is embarrassing for the game that a player goes off for that. I'm allowed to be angry, but I got over it and am happy to accept the result now and get on with the next thing.' Pressed further on the yellow card incident he said: 'For me personally, if the game is sending players to the sin bin for that, or even penalising [them]…What do I say, mate? If I say something, I'll get myself in strife and take away from the champion team who have led the competition and deserve to win the competition." Cole had only been on the pitch for seven minutes, running on to a heart-warming reception, and had looked to charge down the Bath 10. His yellow meant that the Tigers were up against it to mount a comeback, even if they kept scoring points with a man less. Leicester came up with two late tries to set-up a grandstand finish, but ultimately came up short as Bath won their first Premiership title for nearly 30 years. Thomas Du Toit and Max Ojomoh came up with their tries as Youngs and Cole missed out on a champion farewell. "It hurts, but I'm proud," Youngs told BBC Radio Leicester. "My emotions are all over the place right now. You have so much ambition to win today and you don't, and you have that to deal with as you try to take it in. It's a funny old feeling." Meanwhile Bath skipp Ben Spencer said: "The future of this club is unbelievably bright, no matter who pulls on the shirt it's next man in. The work ethic is second to none. As long as we keep our feet on the floor and keep on wanting to get better, the sky is the limit for this team." He added: "The amount of hard work this has taken to turn the ship around... we were bottom three years ago. I can't credit [Johnan Van Graan] enough, he's been absolutely brilliant. If we [understand] there's always an opportunity to get better then I'm really excited for the next couple of years."

Wales rugby greats sing iconic song together to help famous Welsh club after historic season
Wales rugby greats sing iconic song together to help famous Welsh club after historic season The club are raising funds after a massive promotion A a dozen former Wales and British and Irish Lions players belted out a Beach Boys classic as part of a fundraising effort for London Welsh – and the heartwarming choral rendition has been caught on camera. Mike Phillips, Gareth Edwards, Robert Jones and Gerald Davies were just some of the names in attendance in the English capital as they belted out Sloop John B by the iconic American rock band. 1971 Lions choirmaster John Taylor conducted the rendition of the famous track, with the likes of Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel and Wales legend Ken Owens also in attendance and singing along. The event was put on to raise funds for Welsh to invest in their facilities following a landmark season. All former rugby stars, including Sir Ian McGeechan and former England hooker Brian Moore, looked immaculate in their smart clothes, with everyone getting stuck into the song, with arms raised and smiles across the board. It was held at The Brewery on Chiswell Street, with famous Welsh comedian Rob Brydon a guest speaker on the night. It celebrated the 120th year since the first of more than 50 of the club's players represented the Lions. It's been a joyous season for the iconic club, who recently secured promotion back to the National Leagues after being booted out of the Championship back in 2017. After years of hard work by all those behind the scenes, like former Ospreys star Cai Griffiths, the club have climbed their way back to the upper echelons of English rugby and won the league title in the process. Article continues below Despite their ascent, director of rugby Griffiths assured WalesOnline back in March that the club have no intention of targeting a return to the Premiership, they simply want to retain their players and take it season by season. "We want to target top six next season. And then we will basically build on that. The biggest thing is sustainability," he said. "When you start thinking about Championship, Premiership, you start chasing it, that means stupid decisions: payments and costs spiral out of control. "For us, we've done well getting into this league, we want to get into that top six and build again the following year, then hopefully we can get more success. "Retaining 90% of the squad (is our goal), it's a key thing. If we do that, then they'll potentially be five players going to 100 caps next season. "These guys are still young. Seeing the areas we do need to bolster up, it's a big league, as in the players are bigger, there's more games. "You need that strength in depth. The quality is there, even in the second team now. There are a lot of players who have come from the seconds to the firsts. We want to keep on with that pipeline of players." Next season, Welsh will be competing in the National League Two division, which is the fourth tier of English rugby. Join our WalesOnline rugby WhatsApp community here. The project to get promoted was three years in the making, with Griffiths an Co initially focusing on developing young players, and now it's clear that approach has paid off. Article continues below "The group of players that we've got now, we've had them for four, five years. There's a couple of 70-cappers in there which is fantastic and also some players who haven't won anything, so it's fantastic for them to experience that," said Griffiths.
