Eustaquio juggles duties with Porto and Canada

Portuguese club Porto's squad for the Club World Cup includes midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, the captain of Canada, who is also listed in his national team's roster for the ongoing CONCACAF Gold Cup being held in the United States. Having a player represent both his club and national team in two official competitions at the same time is a rare occurrence in football history. Porto began its campaign in the revamped tournament with a goalless draw against Brazil's Palmeiras last Monday in East Rutherford, just one day before Canada's Gold Cup opener in Vancouver. With the Gold Cup jointly hosted by Canada and the U.S., and the Canadian team moving on to Houston, for the rest of its group stage matches, the possibility of Eustaquio joining the squad became realistic, provided Porto's journey in the Club World Cup ends. The flight from East Rutherford to Houston takes about three hours. '(It's) allowed by FIFA and CONCACAF,' Canada's media office told Reuters. 'Eustaquio was named to both rosters a few weeks back, and if fit and able, he will join Canada Soccer's Men's National Team following Porto's conclusion at the Club World Cup,' the national team added in an email. READ: Haji Wright will miss rest of CONCACAF Gold Cup with Achilles injury The inclusion of the 28-year-old Eustaquio in both squads comes at a time when many players are wary of fatigue at the end of the season. Porto did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Portuguese side wraps up the group stage with a match against Egypt's Al Ahly on Monday. It remains unclear whether it will progress to the knockout rounds. Canada, meanwhile, crushed Honduras 6–0 and drew 1–1 with Curacao on Sunday. It concludes the group stage against El Salvador on June 24. Eustaquio came off the bench in the draw against Palmeiras and the 2–1 loss to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. The Canadian team said: 'We want him to do well in the Club World Cup and we also would welcome him back into the men's run at the Gold Cup.'

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Curacao holds Canada to a 1-1 draw; Honduras beats El Salvador

Canada let slip a golden opportunity to take a stranglehold in their group Saturday in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Houston, dropping an extra-time lead and settling for a 1-1 tie against Curacao. Nearly four minutes into extra time up 1-0, the Canadians lost possession near midfield amid sloppy play, and Curacao's Joshua Zimmerman collected the ball, finding teammate Jeremy Antonisse breaking free to his left. Antonisse made a long run to earn a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, juked twice, then scored through the last man in defence for the equaliser. Nathan Saliba had scored for Canada earlier, in the ninth minute, collecting a deflection of a free kick and burying a strike into the bottom left of the net. Honduras topples El Salvador Romell Quioto scored in the 33rd minute and Dixon Ramirez iced the game with a second-half stoppage-time goal as Honduras beat El Salvador 2-0 in in Houston on Saturday night. Paired with Curacao's 1-1 draw, Honduras' win really jammed up the Group B standings with one match remaining before the knockout stage. Honduras improved to 1-1-0 and sits one point behind Canada with three points. Curacao is two back with two draws and El Salvador (0-1-1) has one point. No team has clinched a spot in the knockout round as all four squads have a shot at finishing with at least four points. Quioto opened the scoring on a nifty give-and-go with Edwin Rodriguez. After passing the ball to Rodriguez from just inside midfield, Quioto sprinted toward the net and split two defenders. Rodriguez hit him in stride with a pass and Quioto buried the shot from just inside the box. It was the team's first goal of the tournament after taking a 0-6 beating from Canada in the opener on Tuesday. With El Salvador pressing in an attempt to get the tying goal, Yustin Arboleda headed a crossing attempt from inside the Honduras box, sending the ball to Ramirez. He then sprinted down the field, got past goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez -- who was playing up at midfield -- and easily scored into the empty net in the fifth minute of stoppage time to put the game away. Canada (1-0-1) still leads Group B with four points after two games, with Honduras (1-1-0) in second place in Group B with three points after a 2-0 win over El Salvador later Saturday. Curacao (0-0-2) has two points. Canada will face El Salvador (0-1-1, 1 point) on Tuesday, while Curacao takes on Honduras.
