shared the stage with former cricketer
Chris Gayle
at a public event some time ago, he never imagined the meeting would set the ball rolling on one of his long-cherished dreams.
'Like a true Bengalurean, I'm a huge fan and have grown up admiring Chris Gayle.
During our conversation, I played him some of my work, and he said he liked my music. I told him I'd love to collaborate with him someday.
A few months later, I sent him a concept for a song I had in mind — and to my surprise, he gave it the go-ahead,' says Chandan from Dubai, where the track is currently being shot.
Chris Gayle told me that wherever he goes in the world, Bengalureans treat him as their own - so this track is going to be a treat to all

'Chris Gayle will sing in Kannada'
Chris is no stranger to the city. 'He told me that wherever he goes in the world, Bengalureans treat him as their own,' says Chandan. The highlight? Chris has even sung a few lines in Kannada. Chandan has curated the track specially for the ongoing habba season, blending his trademark sound with a global twist from the cricketing legend.

‘Where do Kannada films even run?' KGF producer recalls reaction of ‘big star' who dismissed the industry

There's no point in contesting the statement that it was director Prashanth Neel's period actioner franchise KGF, starring Yash in the lead role, that put Kannada cinema on the global map. While the industry was entertaining its ardent fans before KGF, Yash's film gave them a bigger spotlight and they got more eyes on them, which proved to be profitable for the Kannada film industry. However, the road to the top wasn't smooth for the industry after all, as it was deemed hopeless by others. Chaluve Gowda of Hombale Films, which bankrolled the KGF movies, recently made a shocking revelation that exposed the contempt and disregard the biggies of other industries had towards Kannada cinema, bluntly assuming it had no audience base and would never command a vast market. Recalling a bitter experience during the casting of KGF: Chapter 1 (2018), when a 'big star' rejected their offer, Gowda stated that the person even ridiculed the industry, saying its films had no takers. 'We went to a big star for KGF years ago. They asked, 'Where do these Kannada films even run?' At that time, not many people knew about Kannada films outside of Karnataka. They knew a few names, like Dr Rajkumar. But that was it. That has definitely changed now,' he shared during a chat with Hindustan Times, adding that such stars now make a beeline for them seeking opportunities. His words soon went viral, prompting many to assume that the 'big star' was approached for the lead role, implying that Yash wasn't the first choice for his now-iconic character, Rocky. Gowda himself later clarified that the project was envisioned with Yash in mind. 'We were always in touch with several other actors pan-India for different key roles in KGF 1. Any reports or rumours claiming that Yash was not the first choice for KGF are incorrect,' he maintained. With a budget of Rs 80 crore, KGF: Chapter 1 managed to gross Rs 238 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Kannada film at the time. This record was later surpassed by its sequel, KGF: Chapter 2 (2022), which grossed a staggering Rs 1,215 crore globally against a budget of Rs 100 crore. The films also featured a star-studded cast including Srinidhi Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Anant Nag, Prakash Raj, Ramachandra Raju, and Vasishta N Simha.

Yash Wasn't The First Choice For KGF's Rocky Bhai? Hombale Films Has This To Say

Last Updated: Helmed by Prashant Neel and backed by Hombale Films, KGF significantly boosted Yash's career, propelling him and the Kannada film industry to new heights South star Yash gained massive popularity following his appearance as Rocky Bhai in the pan-India action thriller franchise, KGF. Helmed by Prashant Neel and backed by Hombale Films, it significantly boosted Yash's career, propelling him and the Kannada film industry to new heights. Recently, several reports suggested that the actor was not the first choice of the makers to play the lead role. Now, reacting to the rumours, the makers of KGF have shared an official statement, calling the speculations baseless. Hombale Films' Official Statement In a statement to Hindustan Times, the makers said, 'We've been working with Yash for longer than we have with any other actor. Moreover, Yash is a member of our family. KGF was created with Yash in mind, and for us, he will always be Rocky Bhai. We were constantly in contact with several other actors across India for significant roles in KGF 1. Any speculations or rumours suggesting that Yash was not the top choice for KGF are false. We have not made any such remarks." Several Actors Rejected KGF Recently, while talking to HT, Chaluve Gowda, co-founder of Hombale Films, stated that the success of their films, such as KGF and Kantara, has raised the status of Kannada films. He claimed that when they approached stars from outside Karnataka for their films, they were rudely dismissed. 'We went to a major star for KGF years ago. They asked, 'Where do these Kannada films even run?' At the time, few people outside of Karnataka were familiar with Kannada cinema. They knew a few names, including Dr. Rajkumar. But that was it. That has definitely changed now," he said. KGF Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 KGF Chapter 1, released in 2018, became the highest-grossing Kannada film, grossing over Rs 250 crore, despite a clash with Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Zero. Following its success, the makers came with KGF Chapter 2 in 2022, which minted more than Rs 1,000 crores worldwide. Notably, the makers have already announced KGF Chapter 3. However, the production of the film is yet to begin. First Published: August 13, 2025, 17:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
