Across the U.S., Over 45,000 Participate in 100 BAPS Charities Walks
NEW YORK, June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a powerful display of community unity and service, more than 45,000 Americans across 100 cities participated in the annual BAPS Charities Walk-Run this past weekend, turning local streets into pathways of collective action. Through a unique approach, this nationwide initiative allowed each city to support causes that mattered most to their communities. This year, the Walk-Run supported over 50 local organizations—from fire and police departments to groups serving veterans, seniors, women, and the homeless. More than 20 health-focused nonprofits also benefited, including those advancing mental health, cancer care, and family wellness. Several schools and education programs received support as well—underscoring how the Walk continues to make a meaningful impact in neighborhoods across the country.
The volunteer effort highlighted a quiet but profound spirit of service, as families and individuals set out to make a difference. From 16-year-old Aarav Dubal lacing his sneakers in Robbinsville, New Jersey, to seniors walking with canes in Los Angeles, California, the energy was contagious.
This year's theme, "Spirit of Service," resonated deeply in cities and communities across the country. In Houston, TX, the walk supported NAMI Greater Houston, helping fund vital mental health services in a city where post-pandemic demand has surged. In San Jose, CA, thousands laced up to provide essential resources for local public schools. Orlando, FL walkers raised funds for a children's cancer camp, while the Dallas, TX community rallied behind local veterans to ensure they receive the support they deserve. In Detroit, MI, participants walked to support their community, and in Albany, NY, the walk also benefited the local fire department. Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, PA, walkers gave back to underserved neighborhoods and community centers.

IDF: Gaza aid centres closed for the day, access to area prohibited
Following reports that Israeli forces killed people near a food distribution site in Gaza, all aid centres in the enclave remain closed on Wednesday, the Israeli military announced. Avichay Adraee, Arabic spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, said on X that facilities would remain shut for "renovation, organization and efficiency improvement works," citing the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which runs the aid operations. The military warned civilians to avoid approaching the centres, declaring the surrounding roads as combat zones. "It is strictly prohibited to enter the distribution centre areas," the spokesman added. The centres are expected to reopen on Thursday. The closure comes after the Hamas-run health ministry said Israeli troops opened fire on civilians near a distribution point on Tuesday, killing at least 27 people and wounding about 90. The Israeli army said its soldiers, stationed about 500 metres from the site, spotted individuals approaching who they deemed a threat. Troops initially fired warning shots before shooting at individual suspects who didn't retreat. The claims could not be independently verified. The GHF had launched its distribution network just over a week ago after Israel, under international pressure, allowed limited humanitarian access following nearly three months of blockade.

FDA commissioner: Measles killing about one in 1,000 victims
(NewsNation) — Health officials in the U.S. are telling all travelers that regardless of where you're flying to, it's important to make sure you're vaccinated against measles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance last week. The health agency previously advised travelers of the importance of vaccination for travelers going to countries that have had an outbreak of the disease. Lead, arsenic found in popular rice brands: Study FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary told NewsNation that measles has a mortality rate of about one in 1,000 people, and usually found in people with co-morbid conditions. But he added that vaccination is effective, and that those who've had the disease before needn't worry. 'It's basically natural immunity once you've recovered from measles,' Makary said. The travel notice advises two vaccination doses for all Americans ages 1 and older. An early dose is advised for traveling infants ages 6 months to 11 months.
