Across the U.S., Over 45,000 Participate in 100 BAPS Charities Walks

NEW YORK, June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a powerful display of community unity and service, more than 45,000 Americans across 100 cities participated in the annual BAPS Charities Walk-Run this past weekend, turning local streets into pathways of collective action. Through a unique approach, this nationwide initiative allowed each city to support causes that mattered most to their communities. This year, the Walk-Run supported over 50 local organizations—from fire and police departments to groups serving veterans, seniors, women, and the homeless. More than 20 health-focused nonprofits also benefited, including those advancing mental health, cancer care, and family wellness. Several schools and education programs received support as well—underscoring how the Walk continues to make a meaningful impact in neighborhoods across the country.
The volunteer effort highlighted a quiet but profound spirit of service, as families and individuals set out to make a difference. From 16-year-old Aarav Dubal lacing his sneakers in Robbinsville, New Jersey, to seniors walking with canes in Los Angeles, California, the energy was contagious.
This year's theme, "Spirit of Service," resonated deeply in cities and communities across the country. In Houston, TX, the walk supported NAMI Greater Houston, helping fund vital mental health services in a city where post-pandemic demand has surged. In San Jose, CA, thousands laced up to provide essential resources for local public schools. Orlando, FL walkers raised funds for a children's cancer camp, while the Dallas, TX community rallied behind local veterans to ensure they receive the support they deserve. In Detroit, MI, participants walked to support their community, and in Albany, NY, the walk also benefited the local fire department. Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, PA, walkers gave back to underserved neighborhoods and community centers.
"Wonderful charities like BAPS Charities are helping to fight the stigma around mental health, and we appreciate you for that," said Angela Hudson, CEO of NAMI Greater Houston.
The wide range of causes supported by the walk made a meaningful impact across communities and enhanced the well-being of individuals and families.
"It's one thing to care," said Bhargav Ashier, a participant in Edison, NJ. "But it's another thing to show up. And this weekend, America showed up in force, proving that compassion is a powerful force for change."
The event's unique community-focused structure allowed each city to maximize its local impact, reflecting specific needs. In Sugar Land, TX, hundreds joined the walk, including Mayor Joe Zimmerman, who lauded the effort: "Your community makes a real difference in Sugar Land. What you do matters."
For over 20 years, BAPS Charities has cultivated this grassroots model, empowering everyday citizens to become changemakers. With more than 1,100 Walk-Runs organized across North America, over the past 20 years, the initiative has built a vast network of civic engagement. Nilkanth Patel, President of BAPS Charities, describes it as "the kindness ripple effect."
"From New York to Houston, and San Jose to Detroit, our interconnected community," Mr. Patel explained, "is driven by compassion, ensures our work touches lives in cities all across the country."
At a time when the importance of unity and harmony is paramount, this weekend offered a rare and compelling portrait of communities moving forward—step by step, city by city—towards tangible improvements in the lives of its citizens.

IDF: Gaza aid centres closed for the day, access to area prohibited

Following reports that Israeli forces killed people near a food distribution site in Gaza, all aid centres in the enclave remain closed on Wednesday, the Israeli military announced. Avichay Adraee, Arabic spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, said on X that facilities would remain shut for "renovation, organization and efficiency improvement works," citing the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which runs the aid operations. The military warned civilians to avoid approaching the centres, declaring the surrounding roads as combat zones. "It is strictly prohibited to enter the distribution centre areas," the spokesman added. The centres are expected to reopen on Thursday. The closure comes after the Hamas-run health ministry said Israeli troops opened fire on civilians near a distribution point on Tuesday, killing at least 27 people and wounding about 90. The Israeli army said its soldiers, stationed about 500 metres from the site, spotted individuals approaching who they deemed a threat. Troops initially fired warning shots before shooting at individual suspects who didn't retreat. The claims could not be independently verified. The GHF had launched its distribution network just over a week ago after Israel, under international pressure, allowed limited humanitarian access following nearly three months of blockade.

FDA commissioner: Measles killing about one in 1,000 victims

(NewsNation) — Health officials in the U.S. are telling all travelers that regardless of where you're flying to, it's important to make sure you're vaccinated against measles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance last week. The health agency previously advised travelers of the importance of vaccination for travelers going to countries that have had an outbreak of the disease. Lead, arsenic found in popular rice brands: Study FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary told NewsNation that measles has a mortality rate of about one in 1,000 people, and usually found in people with co-morbid conditions. But he added that vaccination is effective, and that those who've had the disease before needn't worry. 'It's basically natural immunity once you've recovered from measles,' Makary said. The travel notice advises two vaccination doses for all Americans ages 1 and older. An early dose is advised for traveling infants ages 6 months to 11 months. The U.S. has seen more than 1,000 measles cases so far this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Miles Education and St. James School of Medicine partner to enable Indian NEET Qualifiers to become Licensed U.S. Doctors

BANGALORE, India, June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Education, a global ed-tech leader in outcome-driven international programs, today announced the official launch of the Miles MBBS-MD U.S. Pathway in a strategic partnership with St. James School of Medicine (SJSM), an accredited Caribbean medical school with clinical rotations and residency placements across the United States. The initiative directly addresses two major global healthcare challenges: India's acute shortage of medical seats and the United States' growing demand for licensed physicians. Each year, over 20 lakh Indian students sit for NEET UG, yet only about 120,000 secure a seat—leaving millions of qualified students behind due to limited capacity and sky-high private college fees. At the same time, the U.S. is projected to face a shortfall of 86,000 doctors by 2036, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), with rural and underserved communities being hit the hardest. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) already make up nearly 25% of the U.S. physician workforce and demand continues to rise. The Miles U.S. MBBS–MD Pathway directly addresses both crises by offering Indian NEET UG qualifiers an affordable and high-quality route to become licensed U.S. and Indian doctors. As a part of this program, students complete their pre-clinical coursework in the Caribbean, followed by clinical rotations and residency placements in the U.S., preparing them to clear all three steps of the USMLE and secure a U.S. medical license. All this at 50% lower tuition than Indian private colleges and an earning potential of U.S. Doctor Salaries which is approximately 10x of Indian MBBS and MD. This pathway gives students direct access to American healthcare, which is recognised as one of the most advanced medical systems in the world. Through this experience, Indian candidates gain exposure to world-class medical education and hospital systems. It offers them the opportunity to return and contribute to the Indian healthcare landscape, bringing back global best practices and innovations. As flagbearers of Indian medical talent, these professionals play a vital role in elevating the standard of care and aligning Indian healthcare with global benchmarks. Harsh Jain, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Miles Education, shared: "This initiative is very close to my heart. Medical education in India has become an elitist pursuit. The truth is, some of the most extraordinary doctors come from humble beginnings, driven by passion and determination. Yet today, limited medical seats and barriers make it harder for many talented students to follow their dreams. That's why we're committed to creating a pathway that breaks down these walls, opening doors for aspiring doctors across India to fulfill their dreams and become world-class physicians." Dr. Kallol Guha, PhD, DSc, Founder and President of Saint James School of Medicine, added: "For over 25 years, SJSM has served hundreds of U.S. and Canadian students with quality, accessible medical education. Now, with Miles as our exclusive India partner, we are very happy to open our doors to Indian students. Together, we can transform the affordability and accessibility of global medical education for India's youth. This is a goal that I have envisioned for many years now, and I'm glad that it is finally coming to fruition." Shirsha Guha, COO of St. James School of Medicine said: "We are proud to partner exclusively with Miles Education to provide Indian students a pathway that combines U.S.-standard training with affordability and strong clinical outcomes. This program prepares students to match into competitive U.S. residencies and pursue global medical careers. Our institution has been training doctors from the US and Canada for 25 years, it's time that Indian students too get to benefit from this pathway." About Miles Education Miles Education a global ed-tech leader, working backwards from industry shortages, skill gaps, and emerging opportunities to empower businesses and professionals across accounting, business, healthcare, and tech. By creating innovative pathways, Miles is building a robust ecosystem that sets talent up for success. About St. James School of Medicine SJSM, with campuses in the Caribbean, delivers a U.S.-modeled MD program designed for clinical excellence.
