Composed yet emotional, Kruyswijk secures landmark first DP World Tour victory in Kenya

Khaleej Times25-02-2025
South Africa's Jacques Kruyswijk secured his maiden DP World Tour title with a composed performance at the 2025 Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa, holding off England's John Parry to win by two shots.
Starting the final round with a one-shot lead, the 32-year-old faced early pressure as Parry surged ahead with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth. But Kruyswijk responded with clutch birdie putts on the sixth and seventh, regaining the outright lead at the turn.
A superb up-and-down from the bunker on the tenth stretched his advantage to two, but Parry stayed within reach, cutting the gap to one with a birdie on the 12th.
However, a wayward tee shot from Parry on the 14th led to a costly bogey, allowing Kruyswijk to tighten his grip. A decisive 18-foot birdie on the 16th extended his lead to three, and he calmly parred his way home to seal victory at 18-under.
Parry finished solo second at 16-under, marking another strong result after a win and two runner-up finishes in Africa this season. Deon Germishuys placed third at 13-under, with fellow South African Jayden Schaper in fourth.
An emotional Kruyswijk, who was born in the city of Pretoria, dedicated the win to his family and supporters back home. 'I'm a little lost for words, but this is for my team, my friends, and for South Africa. Keeping the trophy on African soil makes me very proud.
'Wow!! What a crazy few hours this has been. A dream I have been chasing since I started playing this game and to finally be able to call myself a @dpworldtour winner is special'
He also praised the enthusiastic Kenyan crowd: 'The support has been unbelievable. The fans were out in numbers, and I can't thank them enough.'

South Africa level T20 series after Brevis ton flattens Australia

South Africa levelled the three-match Twenty20 series against Australia after Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls to set up their emphatic 53-run victory in the second match in Darwin on Tuesday. Brevis smashed the highest score by a South African batsman in a T20 International to power the tourists to a commanding 218-7 despite a top order wobble at the Marrara Stadium. Australia were bundled out for 165 in 17.4 overs as their nine-match winning streak in the format came to an end. Player of the match Brevis said after being reminded of his record: "I haven't really thought of it like that, to be honest, but I'm just extremely grateful to God and it's been great. "You obviously want to win and come back stronger after the first game, so that was fantastic. "Everyone played their part, whatever it was. We took our catches, the guys nailed their plans, and it was just great." Put in to bat, South Africa began briskly but slumped to 57-3 inside seven overs with skipper Aiden Markram among the dismissed trio. Australia part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell, who opened the attack with Josh Hazlewood, had Markram (18) caught at mid-off and removed Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) stumped in his next over. Brevis combined with Tristan Stubbs (31) and counter-attacked in spectacular fashion to prop up South Africa. The 22-year-old raced to a 41-ball hundred, his first in T20 Internationals, and remained unbeaten after a knock studded with eight sixes and 12 fours. Australia wobbled early in their reply, losing opener Travis Head to Markram's part-time spin in the second over. Teenaged left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka (3-57) conceded five fours in his first over but claimed the important wicket of Cameron Green and returned to remove Maxwell and Mitchell Owen. Tim David (50) hit his second half-century of the series but Australia kept losing wickets, which derailed their chase. The teams meet in Cairns on Saturday for the decider.

This Week in Golf: Lottie Woad's LPGA debut and final DP World Tour event highlights

It seems to have come to that time of year, where things are being decided in the world of golf in so many areas, ultimately deciding where players compete in 2026. This week is the final event on the Closing Swing of the DP World Tour – the Danish Golf Championship. Recommended For You Leading the Swing is Scotland's Grant Forrest, winner of the recent NEXO Championship at Trump International, Aberdeen in Scotland. The leader on Sunday will receive a Swing Bonus of $200,000 plus entry to all the tournaments in the second half of the season. Next week on the DP World Tour is the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo – the final event for qualifying for the top 6 players for Team Europe for The Ryder Cup. It is also the final Individual Event for LIV Golf in Indianapolis with the usual $25 million purse for the 54 holes; these numbers are seemingly becoming the norm and now do not seem to surprise us. Next week in Michigan, the Team Event will see the LIV Golf season come to a close. It is remarkable to think that $28 million will be shared out in Bonus money in LIV Golf on Sunday in addition to the $25 million event purse, and the following week $50 million will be shared amongst the 13 teams, with $14 million to the winning team, $8 million to the runners-up and $6 million to the third team. We wonder if they are getting nervous? On the LPGA, the Standard Portland Classic field is headlined by the likes of Nelly Korda, Minjee Lee, Lottie Woad, Jeeno Thitikul and more. This is set to be a 144-player field played out over four days, with this event marking the LPGA's return to the Pacific Northwest. England's Lottie Woad will be making her LPGA professional debut; she is already number 20 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. Finally, there are just four remaining events on the Korn Ferry Tour. The top 75 players will compete in the Korn Ferry Championship, with four more qualifying events remaining on the calendar. Look out for our own Rayhan Thomas.
