Pahalgam massacre: Ponywallahs quizzed by cops, being 're-verified'

PAHALGAM: Re-verification of all pony guides and other locals in Pahalgam town is being carried out by local police. This action is based on the initial statements of tourists who had visited Baisaran meadow on April 22, the day 26 people were killed there by terrorists, and on videos released on social media by these holidayers.
As many as 20 pony handlers and local guides present in Baisaran on April 22 are being questioned regularly by local cops. On Friday, hundreds of pony owners and guides were called to Pahalgam police station for "verification". There was not even room to set foot inside the PS.
"This is natural. We are being called for verification by police. Although we all were issued proper passes after verification, police are now undertaking more antecedent-checking drives to remove their doubts. We are cooperating fully with them," said Wahid Wani, president of Stand No. 1, Pony Guide Association, Pahalgam.
Wani confirmed that as many as 20 pony guides are being closely monitored or examined. Although they are not being detained, they are called every day for examination, he added. Efforts were made to speak to local police station officers to get more details, but they remained tight-lipped, citing restrictions from senior officers.
Sources confirmed to TOI that not only pony guides/service providers but those involved in selling shawls and Maggi noodles, and people from villages adjacent to Baisaran have been called for verification. Even local police who were on traffic and other duties in the area Tuesday are being called for recording of statements.

Shirgao stampede: All officers' replies in, action after responses are reviewed
Panaji: State govt has started examining the replies submitted by govt officers in response to show-cause notices issued on the Shirgao Jatra stampede. After the chief secretary examines the replies, they will be placed before govt for necessary action. Six people were killed and 74 injured in the stampede. On May 13, state govt issued show-cause notices to eight officers, including the then North Goa collector Sneha Gitte, the then North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal, the then deputy collector of Bicholim, the then DySP of Bicholim, the PIs of Bicholim (transferred since) and Mopa police stations, and the panchayat secretary of Shirgao. Chief minister Pramod Sawant, making the report of the fact-finding committee public, said the report collectively held the temple committee, district administration, district police, village panchayat, and crowd behaviour, particularly that of 'dhonds', responsible for the tragedy. Overspeeding led to accident on Jejuri-Morgaon road: Police
Pune: The accident near Jejuri wherein a car rammed a stationary pickup van from behind on Wednesday evening was because of overspeeding said officials of RTO and Pune rural police after a joint inspection. Late on Wednesday night, one of the two injured children, Sarthak Kiran Raut (6) of Indapur, succumbed to injuries — taking the death toll to nine. A refrigerator was being unloaded from the van for an eatery along the Jejuri-Morgaon Road when the car crashed into the vehicle from the rear around 6.45pm on Wednesday. Pune regional transport officer (RTO) Archana Gaikwad and deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle inspected the accident spot on Thursday morning. "One of our squads visited the spot on Wednesday night too. Initial investigations revealed the accident happened because of overspeeding. The car was likely at a speed of over 100 kmph. Its driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed the pickup van," Bhosle told TOI. "We have checked documents of both vehicles and the insurance and fitness certificates are valid. The driver was not drunk. Assistant inspector Deepak Waghchoure of Jejuri police said, "Investigations show the driver of the pickup van was not at fault. He had parked the vehicle off the road. Its tail light could not be seen since the rear doors were open for unloading. Doctors who performed postmortem at the primary health centre have certified multiple injuries as the cause of deaths. Bodies have been handed over to family members. The officer said, "If the car's speed was within limit, the pickup van would not have overturned. We could not get speedometer evidence from the car because it was destroyed in the crash." Kiran Bharat Raut (32), who was driving the car, was returning home to Pawar Wadi in Indapur along with his wife, son, daughter and two relatives after attending a marriage ceremony when the accident occurred. Raut was among those killed. Police identified the other deceased as Raut's son Sarthak (6) and sister-in-law Ashwini Santosh (23) and her husband, Akshay Shankar Raut (26). The others are eatery owner Somnath Vayse (55) and his employee, Ramu Sanjeevan Yadav (23), both of Nazra Supe in Jejuri taluka. Another eatery employee, Ajit Ashok Jadhav (32) of Kajale in Bhor taluka, and two passersby — Ajaykumar Chauhan (32) of Uttar Pradesh residing in Nazra Supe and Kiranlal Bikaner (35) of Rajasthan — also died. Chauhan and Bikaner were contractual employees at a Kirloskar company located near the accident spot. Ashwini and Akshay were residents of Solapur. The injured victims are Raut's wife Sonali (27), daughter Mahi (4) and cleaner of the pickup van Sachin Bajirao Tambat. They are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Baramati and their condition is reportedly stable. Meanwhile, Waghchoure said, "We reached the spot and tried to open the cars doors, which were jammed. We summoned an earth-moving elevator, broke the door and removed the victims. All the victims were taken to a hospital. Eight people, including a woman, were proclaimed dead on arrival by doctors. The ninth victim succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment." A case related to causing death due to negligence was registered against Raut, a farmer from Indapur. Three children among four dead in Ranchi and Khunti
Ranchi: Four people, including three children, were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Ranchi and Khunti districts in the last 24 hours. While a 10-year-old girl died on Thursday when her house collapsed due to continuous rainfall in Tamar area, a 35-year-old school teacher, who was a native of Dhanbad, is feared dead as he got swept away in the Jonha falls, about 45 km away from Ranchi, situated on the Ranchi-Purulia highway. The 10-year-old girl has been identified as Sanjyoti, a native of Murpa village in Ranchi's Tamar area. The authorities sent her body for post-mortem, and the process to pay compensation to her family was also initiated. The teacher has been identified as Michael Ghosh. "The teacher from Delhi Public School, Ranchi, went to the falls along with his two colleagues. The group went to the upper side of the falls to click selfies when Michael was swept away by a strong current. He is feared dead. The police have been searching for his body," Angara police station in-charge Hiralal Shah told TOI. The police officer said that the other members of the group are safe, and Michael's vehicle was recovered from the spot. In Khunti, Hanni Purty (9) and Ashish Topno (10), who were playing near a newly constructed well, got buried when its wall collapsed in Somwar Bazaar under Murhu PS limits on Wednesday afternoon. NDRF managed to retrieve their bodies on Thursday following the launch of operation on Wednesday night. Khunti sub-divisional police officer Varun Rajwar said, "The bodies were recovered after 22-hour operation. They autopsy has been conducted." Another official said that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each would be given to the affected families. In another incident on Thursday, a youth identified as Raj Kumar Majhi (19) was killed when a mud wall collapsed on him at Didhma village under Torpa PS. He was repairing a house of his relative when the incident occurred. Majhi was rushed to a private hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Separately, NDRF successfully rescued six workers who were trapped on an under-construction bridge over Karkari river in Arki PS area in Khunti district.
