Bryan Mbeumo to Man Utd transfer runs into another problem after Newcastle make move
Bryan Mbeumo's potential move to Manchester United has suffered another blow. United have already had several bids rejected for the Brentford star and the two clubs remain millions apart in their valuation of Mbeumo.
It was recently revealed that appointment of Keith Andrews as Brentford's new head coach has complicated matters as he wants to keep top players like Mbeumo at the club. Andrews replaced Thomas Frank last month after the Dane took over from Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.
And United's pursuit of Mbeumo has taken another hit after it emerged that Newcastle are targeting Yoane Wissa, with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike closing in on a move to Liverpool.
According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are set to make a formal approach for Wissa, who is valued at more than £50m by Brentford. The report also states that Brentford do not want to lose both Wissa and Mbeumo in the same window. As a result, United could miss out on Mbeumo altogether if Newcastle are able to sign Wissa.
The news comes after Brentford's director of football Phil Giles suggested Mbeumo could end up stating in west London after all. "He had a fantastic season," Giles told BBC Sport said when asked about Mbeumo's future last month.
"We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career, of course he does – he is well within his rights to do that. We are in constant dialogue with him and representatives about that.
"As it stands at the minute we don't have an agreement in place for him to leave. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay. It has to be the right deal for Brentford, any club will tell you that.
"If it's not right deal why would we do it? He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There's no harm in keeping your best players."
Mbeumo was key for Brentford last season as he netted 20 Premier League goals in 38 games, with only Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Manchester City's Erling Haaland outscoring him.

They were struggling, which reflected on Sesko's output, but he's still been one of their best and most consistent players. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Arsenal's Kai Havertz, he's not at that level. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner. Newcastle launch improved bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko
Newcastle have raised their bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Manchester United had still to submit a formal offer for the Slovenia international as of Monday afternoon. Newcastle's first bid was worth an initial €75m (£65.5m) with a further €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons but the Tyneside club are now guaranteeing the Bundesliga club at least €80m. United opted to prioritise a move for Sesko over Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins but the 22-year-old's price tag is creeping up now Newcastle have increased their initial offer. Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben is said to have held positive talks with Leipzig on Monday. Sesko is thought to be waiting to see what United do before making a final decision on his future. However, Leipzig are reported to be unwilling to sell Sesko below their stated expectations on a fee. On Sunday, Omar Berrada, the United chief executive, said the club's director of football Jason Wilcox and his recruitment team were working 'around the clock' to make further additions to the squad. United wanted to sign Liam Delap at the start of the season but the striker turned them down in order to join Chelsea from Ipswich for £30m. 'We have a team back home led by Jason – the recruitment team – that is working around the clock to ensure that we continue to find opportunities to strengthen our squad. There are lots of late calls and early morning meetings to make sure that we stay on top of it.' Newcastle's move for Sesko comes amid continuing uncertainty over the future of Alexander Isak.
