PETRA to enhance National Water Policy for sustainable supply in Malaysia
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that this initiative will bolster water security and position Malaysia as a dynamic water hub.
He highlighted the policy's potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and support research and development.
Fadillah emphasised the Department of Irrigation and Drainage's (JPS) role in fostering federal-state collaboration for integrated water management.
He stressed the need for an efficient information system to safeguard water resources and ecosystem sustainability.
Speaking at the 2025 JPS Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference, he reiterated PETRA's commitment under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
The minister noted that climate change and shifting rainfall patterns make water security a critical focus.
Thrust A7 of the 13MP aims to strengthen flood mitigation through innovative and integrated strategies.
Fadillah urged JPS to lead in sustainable water management to address future challenges.
He called for stronger policy facilitation at state and district levels to prevent gaps in water project execution.

Kulim airport will complement, not compete with Penang, says Kedah councillor
KUALA KETIL: The state government will press for the inclusion of the Kulim International Airport (KXP) project in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), describing it as crucial not only for Kedah, but also for the nation. State Industry and Investment Committee chairman Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah said the state's vision for a dedicated cargo airport was not intended to compete with Penang, but to complement it while positioning Kedah as a hub for northern regional development. "However, the federal government still views this project as if it is solely for Kedah, when in fact, we see it as a catalyst for northern regional development covering Kedah, Perlis, Penang and northern Perak. "This is a large and high-potential region that deserves federal support," he said at a press conference after a town hall with the Kedah State Development Corporation (PKNK) and industrial players here. Also present was PKNK chief executive officer Datuk Isahak Murat. Haim said the state's push for the project was within national interest. "Kedah is not just for Kedah, Kedah is for Malaysia. We hope the federal government can see the strategic position of the state in becoming an industrial development hub supported by infrastructure such as this cargo airport." He said six of the eight requirements for the project had been met, with only two outstanding, namely, obtaining the aerodrome licence and securing the airport's inclusion in the National Aerospace Strategic Plan. The state government, he added, had also submitted other proposals to Putrajaya for consideration in 13MP. "Many projects, whether related to logistics such as roads, airports and ports, or other aspects of economic development in Kedah, need to be prioritised and expedited," he said. In the town hall, Haim said the issues raised by industrial players were matters that could be addressed through the involvement and commitment of the relevant agencies. "This initiative by PKNK is commendable. The most important step after this session is to compile the list of issues and channel them to the relevant agencies. From there, we will obtain feedback on the timeframe for resolving these matters," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Strengthening the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) must be a priority under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to ensure the long-term economic sustainability of settlers, a lawmaker told Parliament today. Datuk Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (BN–Jempol) said 112,635 settlers across 317 Felda land schemes nationwide, including 36 in his constituency, require sustained and strategic government support to navigate new challenges. Shamsulkahar proposed adopting advanced technologies such as drones and robotic machinery in oil palm plantations to boost yields and reduce reliance on foreign labour.

Malaysia boosts regional expansion for local films and animation IPs
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is enhancing regional cooperation to expand the reach of Malaysia's creative intellectual properties (IPs), including films and animation, into ASEAN markets. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that Finas is actively forming strategic partnerships to facilitate Malaysian creative IPs in high-potential markets like Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. 'We've seen how Upin & Ipin received tremendous response in Indonesia. Several local films have also successfully penetrated markets like Vietnam and Cambodia,' he said. Fahmi added that these efforts will be intensified to create more opportunities for local creative industry players. He made these remarks at the Riuh Hangout 2025 event organised by MyCreative Ventures, following the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which highlights the creative economy as a key growth driver. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa were also present. Fahmi explained that Finas and MyCreative Ventures will not only provide funding but also facilitate collaborations between animation creators and corporate banking institutions. 'We want to foster synergy between the corporate banking sector and the creative industry in terms of financing,' he said. He noted that licensing and distribution matters will be handled by Finas to streamline the process. This initiative aligns with the 13MP's focus on boosting the creative economy through export market expansion and global competitiveness.
