In another bid to keep the lights on, Ster-Kinekor has teamed up with Rampedi Media Network to show its podcasts on the big screen.
'Looking at ways to repurpose our cinema space for events other than showing top-rated films is very much on our radar,' said Ster-Kinekor's chief marketing officer, Lynne Wylie.
The collaboration between Ster-Kinekor and Rampedi Media Network will see podcasts from the network being shot live at the cinema in front of a live audience.
'We are very excited about this upcoming collaboration opportunity with House of Rampedi to host an interactive podcast recording with a live audience at one of our premier cinema complexes,' Wylie said.
Rampedi Media Network's podcasts, such as Seated with Lebo and Thato, and Thought Digest, will be recorded live.

Ster-Kinekor's challenges
Wylie said Ster-Kinekor plans to host similar activities in the coming months.
In 2023, it did something similar when it collaborated with MacG's Podcast and Chill, screening a tell-all episode where Black Coffee was a guest.
Its cinema in Mall of Africa was sold out within hours of the announcement.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Ster-Kinekor has experimented with a variety of ideas to repurpose its venues, in a bid to keep the lights on.
Due to financial pressures arising from the pandemic, in 2021 Ster-Kinekor commenced its business rescue. The cinema exited the business rescue more than a year after that, in November 2022.
Last year, the movie outlet announced that it would lay off 236 employees and close up to nine of its cinemas in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

Rampedi Media Network's growth
In contrast, the Rampedi Media Network has consistently shown growth over the years, expanding its audience.
In 2024, its founder and owner, Thato Rampedi, decided to step away from the limelight and focus on expanding his brand through the creation of additional shows. He put his weekly vlogs on hold for a year.
'I feel like it's like being a soccer player, it will only last for so long,' Rampedi said about being the sole content creator in front of the camera.
'So I decided to move behind the scenes and start this Rampedi Media Network. We decided to basically sign talent and start new podcasts,' he said in late 2024.
He said the network's ensemble on one of his shows, AsMajita which feature Percy ASF, Gontse, Lebo, and himself, has become a testament to the power of creative collaboration.
'As a collective, we consistently push boundaries in digital content creation, bringing fresh perspectives and authentic storytelling to our audience. The network's success in brand collaborations with industry leaders,' Rampedi said.
Rampedi Media Network's live recording will be hosted at Ster-Kinekor's Rosebank venue, The Zone, on Thursday.

'My journey started in 2021, now I know I'm going somewhere': DJ Lady P

R&B DJ Lady P is steadily carving out her space in South Africa's soul scene. Her journey began during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2021 — a time of uncertainty for most, but one that sparked a powerful creative path for this rising talent. 'My journey started in 2021 during Covid-19 when I joined the Laidback team,' she said. 'This is that moment for me was when I played for Black Coffee and his mom. That's when I saw I'm going somewhere with this journey.' It was more than just a performance; it was a moment that shaped her identity not just as a DJ but as an artist. 'I always loved listening to soul music and fusion. My dad was a music lover,' she said. 'Milara's One Man Woman, Randy Crawford's Shine and Gladys Knight & the Pips' Midnight Train to Georgia, those were my favourites growing up.' For Lady P, R&B isn't just a genre, it's a feeling. 'R&B speaks to the heart, speaks to the soul. You fall in love over and over again.' Her style blends old-school classics with timeless R&B. She's unapologetic about her sound, often steering clear of mainstream, newer R&B to stay true to what her audience enjoys most. 'I don't normally play the new R&B. My supporters enjoy the genre I play and I believe people still love old music. I'm optimistic about where this sound is going.' Crafting the perfect set is all about the vibe. 'You check the mood and the groove of the patrons. That's how you connect.' But being a woman in the DJ industry comes with its set of challenges. 'There are a lot of female DJs,' she notes, 'but we're crafting our genres differently. There's always room for improvement.' And Lady P is just getting started. She hinted at projects on the horizon. 'It's still in the pipeline, something is cooking,' she teased. You can catch her live every first and last Sunday of the month at NewsCafe Emperors Palace with the Laidback Sessions team. On Saturday, August 10, she'll be playing at Sdumza's Lounge, Butcher 2.0. Details for September gigs will drop on her socials soon. Her inspirations are rooted locally and globally. 'Locally, I look up to Lesego DM. Internationally, it's Aretha Franklin's greatest hits that keep me grounded. But the one song that always hits me deeply? Gladys Knight's Licence to Kill.' If she wasn't behind the decks? 'I'd definitely be a gospel or R&B singer.'

Even though the couple keep their romantic life private, the lovebirds certainly do not shy away from expressing their love for each other on their social media accounts.

LOOK: One artist's powerful journey through loss, recovery and the redemptive power of music

In a recent social media post, DJ and music producer &friends shared a heartfelt timeline of the trauma of losing his brother and his long journey back to music. In a deeply personal and emotional social media post, the New York-based artist offered fans a timeline of that trauma and the long road back to music, healing and success. Ten years ago, DJ and music producer &friends lost his little brother - a devastating event that would send his life and career spiralling into silence. His story, spanning a decade of pain, purpose and resilience, culminates in his first major hit, 'Jackie B', released earlier this year alongside Brent Faiyaz and Joseph (CH). The post isn't just a career retrospective - it's a vulnerable look at how grief can derail your dreams, but also how it can shape and even resurrect them. In his post, &friends writes: August 2015: 'After 6 years of DJing and making music, I lost my little brother. The music stopped. I quit completely.' The loss was too immense. In one moment, music - the thing that had defined him - had become unbearable. June 2016: To escape his grief, he uprooted his life, moving from San Diego to New York City. He joined a marketing agency simply to survive. 'Music? Dead to me,' he admitted. It was no longer a passion, just a reminder of pain. December 2018: Unexpectedly, an opportunity arose. A top NYC club invited him to DJ - the date? His brother's birthday. 'I said yes. For him.' That night, something stirred. 'People felt something. I did too.' 2020: The Covid-19 pandemic hit. While building the company and working 80-hour weeks, music became his outlet again. 'Every free second? I poured into music. It was the only thing keeping me sane.' October 2021: He leapt. He left his marketing job behind. 'Everyone said I lost it … Maybe I did. Maybe I was. But I couldn't live without music anymore.' 2022: He dropped his first record, and then came 'Ode Ireti' featuring El-Jay and Oluwadamvic. The track went viral after Keinemusik played it at Burning Man. 'Something shifted,' he recalls. 2023: His dream took off. He played his first international shows. He was touring - but it wasn't easy. 'Balancing health, art and business? Harder than anyone tells you. I kept going for both of us.' 2024-2025: He debuted a new track at Coachella - 'Jackie B'. The reception was electric. It went viral. Two weeks ago, he released it officially - with Brent Faiyaz and his longtime collaborator Joseph (CH). 'My first big, big hit. I know the little bro is watching.'
