Rio Ngumoha ready to shine for Liverpool after pre-season wondergoal but which other English teens will light up Prem?

The Sun7 hours ago
RIO NGUMOHA will be hoping to light up Liverpool's season - after shining in pre-season.
The Reds youngster is only 16 but has played a key role in Arne Slot's preparations for the new campaign, including a stunning solo goal on Monday.

The 'second XI' Liverpool team beat their Athletic Bilbao counterparts 4-1 as Ngumoha ran from his own half and curled in from 20 yards out in the second minute.
By the fifth, he had added an assist, too, by nodding a header down for Darwin Nunez before being subbed off to a standing ovation in the second half.
Liverpool poached teenage winger Ngumoha, who turns 17 on August 29, from Chelsea.
The Reds were impressed by his goalscoring performance in the U17 Premier League Cup final win against Wolves in April 2024 - and the Blues could not stop his move to Merseyside.
Angry Chelsea responded by blocking Liverpool scouts from attending Chelsea youth matches.
John Terry wrote at the time: 'This boy is and will be a top player.'
He became the second-youngest starter in Liverpool history aged 16 years and 135 days when they played Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup in January.
Now after his superb pre-season, the former Chelsea academy star could feature in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday - then make his Premier League debut.
Nguhoma expressed his belief he can 'win the Ballon d'Or one day' before even making a senior appearance when he boldly declared: "I want to be regarded as one of the best players to ever play football and be a legend of the game.'
But while the England youth star has a long way to go to realise those dreams, team-mate Andy Robertson is confident the kid will be a nightmare for Premier League full-backs.
Robertson told The Anfield Wrap: 'He's not bad, is he?
'He's a good kid as well and he's got a fantastic head on his shoulders. Especially when he's got people like Mo [Salah] who can help him so much.
'Obviously that's the last two games now I've played with Rio in front of me and he just keeps on coming on and he's got a hell of a future ahead of him but the here and now looks pretty good as well.'
Gary Gillespie added to LFC TV: 'He is such an excellent prospect. The difficulty is managing expectations but it's hard to put a lid on it."
And Slot beamed: "Rio is showing things every time in pre-season."
But Ngumoha is not the only English teenager hoping to make their mark on the Premier League this season…
Trey Nyoni, 18 - Liverpool
Ngumoha's team-mate Nyoni held the previous record for Liverpool's youngest FA Cup player - and is club's youngest player in European football.
The central midfielder was snatched from Leicester with a tribunal needed - but is now fully focused on adding to his six first-team games for Slot's side.
Will Wright, 17 - Liverpool
Striker Wright signed from Salford this week after making his professional bow last season but will likely be in Rob Page's U21s set-up.
Max Dowman, 15 - Arsenal
Arsenal fans are getting very excited about "special" playmaker Dowman, who has had to wait to get his Premier League debut as he started last season aged 14.
Premier League rules state players must not be below the Under-16s age group in order to be named in a matchday squad.
But few would bet against Dowman, who impressed in the Far East in recent weeks, following in the footsteps of Arsenal pal Ethan Nwaneri and Leicester's Jeremy Monga last season by starring in the top flight before his 16th birthday on New Year's Eve.
Divine Mukasa, 17 - Man City
Attacking midfielder Mukasa won back-to-back FA Youth Cup titles - in 2023 with West Ham then 2024 with Man City.
Also eligible for Lithuania and Uganda, he has played across three youth ages for England.
Shim Mheuka, 17 - Chelsea
Mheuka was born in Birmingham, had a spell at Brighton and is now at Chelsea, where the versatile forward got one minute in the Prem but made four appearances on the way to Conference League glory under Enzo Maresca in 2024-25.
Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Nicolas Jackson are fighting for the No9 spot and Mheuka faces a tough battle to get any minutes on the wings.
Josh King, 18 - Fulham
Not the Norwegian Josh King who played for Bournemouth, this is the English midfielder who made eight Premier League appearances for Fulham last term.
19
Harry Howell, 17 - Brighton
Attacking midfielder Howell came on for his Premier League debut as Brighton beat champions Liverpool in May.
He is the cousin of Seagulls midfielder Jack Hinshelwood.
Ayden Heaven, 18 - Man Utd
Made a high-profile transfer from Arsenal in February and immediately thrown into the first-team set-up by Ruben Amorim.
A strong left-footed defender, Heaven will put his comical own goal against Everton behind him and challenge the senior internationals at Old Trafford.
Harry Amass, 18 - Man Utd
Alongside Heaven, he could be joined by fellow Young Lions star, left-back Amass.
The ex-Watford teen made his senior United debut on his 18th birthday at Leicester in March, played twice in the Europa League final run and could be the future solution to the left-back struggles.
Chris Rigg, 18 - Sunderland
Rigg only turned 18 at the end of June but has already racked up 72 first-team games for Sunderland - including 42 in the 2024-25 Championship season.
The sale of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund will give Rigg more of a spotlight and his cheeky backheel Goal of the Month last season proves he has the confidence and talent to make an impact at the highest level.
Harrison Armstrong, 18 - Everton
Liverpool-born midfielder Armstrong has been at Everton since he was five and made his Prem debut aged 17 away at Tottenham last August before a fruitful loan spell at Derby, where he helped keep the Rams up.
Caleb Kporha, 19 - Crystal Palace
Following Nathaniel Clyne and Aaron Wan-Bissaka along the Crystal Palace conveyor belt of right-backs is Kporha.
The attacking wing-back made his Premier League bow last season and played in all of England's U19 Euros matches this summer.
Jayden Meghoma, 19 - Brentford
Left-back Meghoma was also part of that U19 Euros squad after working through the England youth ranks.
The ex-Southampton defender made four Brentford appearances last term - as well as 14 on loan at Preston.
Remy Rees-Dottin, 19 - Bournemouth
Another youngster who started out at Southampton, striker Rees-Dottin appeared in the FA Cup and Premier League under Androni Iraola in 2024-25 and will hope for more minutes this season.
19
Lewis Orford, 19 - West Ham
Just one letter different from another West Ham teenage debutant in Reece Oxford, midfielder Orford has already been compared to ex-Hammers men Declan Rice and Frank Lampard.
Mateus Mane, 17 - Wolves
Mane was in such high demand last season that Portugal and England both called him up at the same time - and the forward chose the latter.
Born in Portugal, he moved to Manchester as a child and rattled in seven goals in 15 U18 Premier League last season to earn his top-flight debut.
Kadan Young, 19 - Aston Villa
Winger Young impressed against Chelsea in a friendly win during the 2022 World Cup and has two EFL Cup games to his name - plus three appearances on loan at Royal Antwerp last season.

Rangers 3-0 Viktoria Plzen: What the players said

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers replied "no" when asked if head coach Russell Martin's comments gave the side extra motivation to perform."I think you need this motivation always," he told BBC Scotland."And I think he said it at the weekend as well, it's easy to have this for European games and Old Firm games, but you need it every time because there are no easy games in the Scottish Premiership, so we need to pick up our levels there as well."Rangers winger Oliver Antman: "It was great, a great atmosphere in a great stadium."I think we played some great football and at the weekend we have to continue this."

Lyon complete signing of Tyler Morton from Liverpool for £15m - as starlet goes in search of first-team football after failing to break into Arne Slot's side

Lyon have completed the signing of midfielder Tyler Morton from Liverpool for a £15million fee. The England U21 international has been looking to move for more regular first team game time and had attracted enquiries from a number of clubs including West Ham, Sporting Braga, Ajax and Strasbourg. Liverpool were holding out for £15m for the 22-year old academy graduate, which the Ligue 1 side have met to bring him to the club. Morton spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Championship side Hull City. The 22-year-old returned to Merseyside last season but could only manage six appearances in all competitions as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his maiden campaign in charge. Morton joins a Lyon side that were demoted to Ligue 2 earlier this summer due to their poor finances but their position in the French top flight was restored after appeal. RANGERS 3 VIKTORIA PLZEN 0: Ibrox men deliver emphatic response to manager's criticism as they take a giant leap towards Champions League

While it's way too early to predict how Russell Martin's tenure at Rangers will unfold, we already know something for sure. He isn't a man who's going to say one thing and do another. His coruscating critique of his side's pitiful efforts at Fir Park at the weekend felt like the day a line was drawn in the sand. Too many old faces going through the motions. Already a danger that he'd be the latest manager to carry the can for them. Evidently doubtful that those culpable could lose the bad habits he identified overnight, he opted to take a decisive step and left their egos on the sidelines. Suffice to say that it may be some time before James Tavernier, Nico Raskin, Danilo or Kieran Dowell are given a chance to make amends from the start of a match. The consequence of these sweeping changes was a display brimming with energy, industry and application. It was light years removed from the opening league game. Rangers scored three and might well have had more. As impressive as Martin's side were with the ball, it was their efforts out of possession which really caught the eye. Absolutely nothing came easy for the men from Plzen. Unlike on Saturday, runners were tracked and blocks were made. The fundamentals of the game were there in abundance. After taking a few moments to settle, Rangers struck through Djeidi Gassama. He was also the right man in the right place to head his side into a three-goal advantage early in the second half. Now with four goals in three European games, what a signing the young man from Sheffield Wednesday is proving to be. Restored to the side, Cyriel Dessers was also excellent. Having created Gassama's opening goal, he slotted home a penalty to give Martin's men a two-goal lead at the interval. His all-round play was on a different level to that of Danilo. Another star of the show was the less heralded of Martin's nine summer signings. Lyall Cameron has had to wait patiently for his first start since joining from Dundee. He won't have to wait too long for his next. The smallest man on the field proved to be one of the most effective. He read the game whenever Plzen threatened to counter, demanded the ball and held it when his side needed him to. He pressed and probed all evening. And he made it all look so simple. Max Aarons will also take much from this performance. Having laboured so far at left-back — understandably — he looked far more at home on the other side. He started the move which led to the third goal. Martin's radical selection afforded opportunities to Jefte, Cameron and Dessers, with Oliver Antman handed his debut from the start following his £3million move from Go Ahead Eagles. The Finn immediately endeared himself to the light blue legions, winning a penalty and setting up Gassama's second. It was a hugely impressive first night's work from the winger. Martin had predicted that Plzen would be a powerful unit and he wasn't wrong. But they lacked subtlety and guile. There was little here to suggest they can stage a miraculous comeback in the second leg. Rangers actually started a little anxiously. Jefte's misplaced pass to Matej Vydra would have had dire consequences had a deflection not taken the sting out of the forward's shot. A long kick up the field by visiting keeper Florian Wiegele evaded Cameron and let Amar Memic in down the right. His cross was met by the head of Rafiu Durosinmi. Jack Butland was pleased to see the ball bounce wide. The home side's first promising move came from a link-up between their two wide men. Antman got in behind the defence and stood the ball up to the far post. Gassama looked set to score until Svetozar Markovic steered the ball away for a corner. It was enough to lift the atmosphere inside Ibrox. The place was rocking on the 15-minute mark as Gassama struck. It was a simple yet brilliant move. He rolled the ball into Dessers' feet and gambled by darting into the box. Dessers' return ball round the corner was delightful. Gassama ran onto it, took a steadying touch and picked his spot in the far corner. There was plenty to encourage Martin although still too many cheap turnovers for his liking. With Jefte caught up field, Memic again advanced at will down the flank. Vydra hammered the winger's cross towards goal. Nasser Djiga's sliding block saved the day. With Cameron always prepared to take the ball in tight situations, though, Rangers always looked like creating opportunities. A terrific pass in behind by the Scot allowed Gassama to pull the ball back. Antman thought he'd scored on his first appearance. Vaclav Jemelka's positioning on the line ensured Rangers' lead remained at one. Raskin managed to achieve the rare feat of being booked while not being on the field. The Belgian knew what he was doing when he prevented Plzen from taking a quick free-kick. Jefte's caution for taking out Lukas Cerv was rather more conventional. The Czechs sought to feed their wide men and look to hit the towering frame of Durosinmi. John Souttar, handed the captain's armband, did a commendable job of ensuring the crosses rarely found their intended target. A polished first half display was rewarded with a second goal just before the board went up. Antman won the ball back deep in his own half and charged forward. Gassama showed he can provide as well as finish with a pin-point pass that took out three white jerseys. The Finn gathered and made for the penalty box. A drop of the shoulder invited a panicked challenge by Vydra. French referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot. Dessers had to wait for his moment but held his nerve, calmly sending the keeper the wrong way. This was much more like it. Mohamed Diomande was the one player in blue who toiled in the opening period. To be fair, he plugged away and clipped the bar at the start of the second period. Six minutes after the restart, Martin's side had one foot on the pay-off round. Aaron's sweeping pass released Antman down the right. His deep cross was the perfect pace for Gassama. A thumping header brought up the third. While Raskin, Danilo and Tavernier were belatedly introduced, a handsome victory was secured by others.
