Driver fires AR-15 at deer from car, then is seen going 117 mph, Oregon cops say
A man was seen shooting at a deer out of his car window before going 117 mph past authorities in Oregon, deputies said.
Someone first called about driver at 7:07 p.m. April 12 near Lebanon, the Linn County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The caller reported seeing someone shoot at a deer out of their black Mustang, deputies said.
Deputies said another report came in of the same vehicle driving recklessly, 'doing burnouts in the middle of the road and racing through the area.'
The driver then sped 117 mph past deputies as they were responding to another call, authorities said.
Deputies said the driver was going toward Albany and was seen 'passing vehicles in no passing zones.'
As authorities went looking for him, they got more calls about someone in the same vehicle side-swiping a Mercedes and fleeing, deputies said.
The owner of the Mercedes contacted authorities and said they'd tracked the vehicle down, finding it parked in a driveway, deputies said.
Deputies responded and began looking for the three occupants.
They found the driver, 36-year-old Justin Franklin of Oklahoma, trying to hide in a field and took him to a hospital after he was bit by a police dog, deputies said.
He was then arrested him on these charges:
Suspicion of attempting to elude a police officer
Felon in possession of a firearm
Reckless driving
Reckless endangerment
Failure to perform the duties of a driver
His 19-year-old son was also in the vehicle, along with a 20-year-old from Louisiana.
Authorities said they found an AR-15 in blackberry bushes near the field and determined Franklin used it to shoot at the animal.
They couldn't find an injured or dead deer that night, deputies said, so it's not known if the animal was ever hit by the shots.
Lebanon is about a 35-mile drive southeast from Salem.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Sheriff's Office released shocking body camera video on Thursday afternoon of an officer-involved shooting in California City that left the 17-year-old suspect and an officer injured. The shooting happened in April and the sheriff's office released just parts of one officer's body worn camera footage on Friday. From the 911 call made by a witness to the arrest of the suspect, the video details what transpired that afternoon. The teen — 17-year-old Annette Garcia — is in custody in Juvenile Hall, awaiting her competency trial. Footage released by KCSO starts with a 911 call made by a witness. 'Okay, there is a girl walking towards Lime right now. Red bandana. She just shot a gun. She just put it in her pocket,' the caller said. 'Let's get in the house before she shoots again. Dude, I don't want to die… she just shot the gun, but she just saw my son. Sh**. She waved at him.' The witness saw Garcia on the afternoon of April 21 as she allegedly made her way around Corwin Street and Lime Avenue in California City, armed with a handgun. There were multiple witnesses. 'Did she shoot at you?' the caller asks a passerby in a white van. 'She shot at the white van,' she then tells the dispatcher. 'He's trying to call you guys too.' The sheriff's office said the van and a package inside were penetrated. Two California City police officers initially responded to the scene. Reports show while one of them — Officer Timothy Stivers — talked to witnesses, the other — Officer Michael Kelakios — looked around for Garcia. He found her nearby on Hickory Avenue, and a gun battle was exchanged. There were 15 total shots fired by Officer Kelakios. Two of them hit Garcia in the right hip and left elbow. Kelakios was shot in the leg and remains on leave while he recovers. 'Where you shot man?' Officer Stivers asks Officer Kelakios, applying a tourniquet for his colleague. 'Right here, bro,' Kelakios answers, adding, 'She's young, she went that way. Hey, watch yourself, she just pulled [the gun] out and shot right at me, bro…wearing like grey pants, grey hoodie, Hispanic female, black hair. Vincent and Stivers chase after the suspect. Vincent detailed to 17 News he had Garcia at gunpoint with his AR-15. Garcia also had additional live ammunition and a knife. 'Show us your hands, now! Put your hands up! All the way up! All the way up!' the officers shouted, as they apprehend Garcia. 'I'm sorry. I was just trying to help my family. They were trying to kill my family,' Garcia responded. As she's handcuffed and arrested, Garcia visibly and audibly struggles, appearing to be in pain. As officers ask her to get on her stomach, Garcia repeats, 'I can't.' At an earlier juvenile court hearing, a prosecutor said Garcia had access to unsecured firearms at her mother's house. Vincent said the mom was arrested last week for a felony — allowing a minor access to firearms. Garcia faces nine total charges, including two counts of attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm in public and being a minor in possession of ammunition. The case was postponed multiple times as Garcia initially recovered at Antelope Valley Hospital. She's now completed a mental competency examination by a psychologist. Those results will be reviewed by a judge to determine if she's competent to stand trial. KCSO said the use of force in this case was determined to be within policy. Northwest Illinois man connected to CPD officer's shooting death appears in court
CHICAGO (WGN) — The man charged in the death of Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera appeared before a Cook County judge on Thursday. During a brief appearance in Cook County Criminal Court, 25-year-old Adrian Rucker's public defender got permission from the judge to move Thursday's status hearing for his client to Friday. Post-hearing, the mother and aunt of Rucker told WGN News that they still have questions for investigators concerning the June 5 incident on the city's South Side. 'We're waiting for bodycam footage,' Monique Reed, Rucker's aunt, said. Authorities said the deadly shooting unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. as CPD officers pursued Rucker, who allegedly fled from a nearby investigatory stop at an apartment near E. 82nd St. and S. Drexel Avenue. According to CPD, Rivera and another police officer chased an armed Rucker into a unit. Prosecutors say Rucker fled down a hallway and bodycam video captures the suspect pointing an AR pistol, but not firing it. 'Never had a gun. No gun was found on him.' Along with serving as part of the Sixth District's tactical team, those who knew Officer Rivera remembered her as a loving mom who was known for her courage and compassion. Inside the unit on Drexel, investigators say they found three guns, suspected narcotics, and multiple fake IDs with Rucker's picture. The 25-year-old of Freeport —a town west of Rockford— faces multiple felonies, including armed violence, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal drug possession. Monique Reed says her nephew doesn't live in the apartment where the shooting occurred. 'I feel like he's being railroaded right now,' she said. 'We have his side of the story.' Court documents say the armed suspect Officer Rivera and the other officer were chasing last Thursday got away. WGN News reached out to Chicago police to learn if the department is continuing its search, but has not yet heard back. YPD, OSHP, find guns, marijuana in cars that were part of chase investigation
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Reports said police and state troopers Wednesday found guns and marijuana in two cars that were recovered during a high-speed chase Tuesday. The cars, which were in a city impound at 703 Wilson Ave., were seized after a man was arrested following a chase about 11 p.m. Monday that ended after the driver went to a building in the 1100 block of Andrews Ave and parked there. In the building, police found a Jeep heavily damaged by gunfire that had two guns inside in plain view and a dodge Charger that had a large amount of marijuana inside. Police had the cars towed and got a search warrant to search them Wednesday in the impound lot. Inside the Jeep, officers found an AR-15 pistol and a 9mm handgun. Inside the Charger, police found several packs of marijuana edibles, packages of marijuana in small and bulk size and five packs of disposal THC vape pens, reports said. The man who led police on the chase, Derrian Thomas, was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court and is free after posting $7,500 bond. He is due for a preliminary hearing June 18.
