Mystery over Charles and Harry 'leak' as questions asked about Sussex motive

Daily Mirror15 hours ago
As royal watchers hold out hope for reconciliation between King Charles and Prince Harry, questions continue to swirl around a recent private meeting between the Palace and Team Sussex, including over a leak which could threaten the peace making process
For five long years, royal watchers have wondered whether the Windsor rift would ever be bridged. Now, leaked information and bombshell photos suggest peace could be on the horizon for the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family - but it won't be easy.
Last week, in what is regarded as the first significant communication in many years, Prince Harry's right-hand woman, Meredith Maines, flew to London from California to meet with King Charles' communications chief, Tobyn Andreae. Liam Maguire, who runs the Sussexes' UK PR team, was also in attendance.

It's understood that the two parties conversed over 'informal drinks' on the sun-drenched terrace, the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL), a private member's club which, tellingly, has a history of promoting friendship across the globe.

In the spring of 2020, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, made the shock decision to step down as senior working royals and begin a new life in the US. In the years since, Harry, 40, has opened up on repeated occasions about the chasm between himself and his family, most notably in his 2023 memoir, Spare.
Now, it would appear that some of the frost has thawed, with the two sides having taken the first tentative steps of mending long-fractured relations.
Unfortunately, this delicate process has been rocked somewhat after details of the secret peace treaty were leaked, reportedly causing dismay in both camps. Here, the Mirror takes a look inside the meeting, which could well open up a new chapter for the warring family.

'Informal' talks
As reported by the Mail on Sunday, the topic of Harry returning to a more formal role within the royal fold was not discussed during the hush-hush meeting, held mere minutes away from Clarence House. However, both teams expressed a desire to avoid any media clashes or calendar conflicts going forward.
In May last year, a timetable clash between Charles' royal garden party and Harry's Invictus Games event meant the father and son were not able to meet during the Duke's brief visit to the UK.

According to a source close to the situation, 'There was no formal agenda. But both sides came to the table ready to talk. It's the first real channel of communication we've seen in years.'
The source also told the publication that 'the meeting was with Harry's blessing", while Buckingham Palace also reportedly supports plans to 'open a channel of communication.'

After wrapping up drinks, it's understood that Silicon Valley strategist Maines jetted back to the Sussexes' £15 million Montecito mansion, where Harry was given a full briefing.
Family 'pain'
Although it's currently unclear who made the first move towards arranging a summit, this meeting has been viewed as a clear sign that both parties wish to move forward and build a more positive familial relationship.

Just two months ago, in a candid BBC interview, Prince Harry opened up about his heartache over not being on speaking terms with Charles, claiming his father 'won't speak to me because of this security stuff,' in reference to the Sussexes fighting against the removal of their police protection in the UK.
Emphasising that he would 'love a reconciliation', Harry went on to clarify that he had 'forgiven' family members following their 'disagreements". He reflected: 'There's no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious."

Meanwhile, it's believed the King holds out hope of rebuilding a bond with Harry, and getting to know his young grandchildren, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.
Shortly before Harry's interview with the Beeb, royal sources advised The Sun that while Charles remained "frustrated" by his youngest son's behaviour, the door had "not been locked forever".
'The King is at heart a loving and generous man. That love has been sorely tested by this case and so many other issues over recent times. But there is now a chance for his son to move forward rather than dwell on past grievances," the insider said.

'From his father's perspective, the door has been shut by necessity while this painful issue played out through the proper judicial channels — but it has not been locked forever nor the key thrown away."
Leak mystery
After details of the meeting leaked, social media users speculated over who exactly spilt the bombshell information, with some speculating that an individual from the Sussex camp could have been responsible.

Others also went as far as to suggest that this could well have been a test set for Prince Harry, to see if he could be trusted to keep things private before any sort of reconciliation process could begin.
However, sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes say the couple have been frustrated by the leak and deny giving away any information. The Daily Telegraph reports that, unfortunately, the emergence of the snaps has led to yet more distrust on both sides, while a source close to Harry has said the images being made public made for a disastrous start toward what was intended to be a quiet peacemaking process.
Meanwhile, there is said to be a 'weary disappointment' behind Palace doors, over both the photos and leaked talks.

William's role
Although Prince William's team were notably not involved in the London summit, it's believed that the talks would not have gone ahead without the heir to the throne being consulted beforehand. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Mail Online: "The King would never have made these moves without William's support and understanding. William and Catherine are the future of the monarchy.
"He has undoubtedly been furious at the way the Sussexes have behaved and undoubtedly regards Harry's behaviour as treason of a sort. They reportedly have not spoken in over two years.'

Looking ahead to any future bond between the two estranged brothers, it would appear there is still some way to go. During his recent BBC interview, Harry appeared to make reference to William, admitting that 'some members of my family will never forgive me' for writing Spare, which included details of rows between the siblings.
At the time of writing, it doesn't appear that William has any plans to meet with his younger brother, despite opportunities presenting themselves in the months to come.
Next steps

With the first all-important step taken, royal watchers will no doubt be keeping an eye out to see what unfolds next. And there are some significant dates in the calendar coming up.
In September, Prince Harry will be travelling to the UK for the annual WellChild events, which could present an opportunity for him to meet face to face with King Charles for the first time in 18 months.
Meanwhile, just last month, The Mail on Sunday revealed that The Duke of Sussex had extended an olive branch to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, set to be held in Birmingham. It's understood that senior palace aides are currently considering this proposal, which could see a public mending of bridges.

This comes at a time when sources claim Prince Harry has been touching base with old UK confidants in an attempt to orchestrate his 'return from exile,' following alleged disillusionment with US-based advisors.
As the first-ever chief communications officer for the Sussexes, Maines is understood to be at the helm of this royal rehabilitation campaign, having masterminded Meghan's Netflix project, With Love, Meghan, as well as her lifestyle brand As Ever. This is viewed as a sign that the couple are now adopting a more structured 'royal-style' household, many miles away from Buckingham Palace.
At the time of writing, neither Buckingham Palace or Team Sussex have issued comments about the meeting, however, there is an air of cautious optimism amongst insiders, one of whom remarked: "Everyone wants to move forward. There's still a long road ahead. But this was a start – and a good one.'

'Harry and William must bury the hatchet - or there'll be incalculable damage'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, need to be "brought in from the cold" five years after they quit royal duties for a new life in California, an expert says Prince Harry and Prince William must end their feud now - or the UK will face "incalculable damage," a royal expert claims. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will "seethe and seek revenge" if William, heir to the throne, refuses to make peace with his brother, according to newspaper columnist Andrew Norman Wilson. He argues this would lead to great tensions when William, Prince of Wales, becomes king. ‌ "When Charles vacates the stage, as one day he must, and William is anointed, a middle-aged brother in exile, on non-speakers with the sovereign but with a potential audience of billions, could do incalculable damage," writes Mr Wilson. ‌ "It would be miles better [than Harry writing another book, for instance], then, that the Sussexes be brought in from the cold. Both sides should be seeking, not only diplomatic and political help, but personal counsel. "This was a pair of brothers who, from earliest childhood, were facing the broken marriage of their parents; their mother's untimely death; unfounded and scurrilous speculation about Harry's paternity; and generally a gnawing inferiority complex on Harry's part – some of it understandable. Who wouldn't feel inferior, after all, to the heir to throne?" READ MORE: King Charles accused of 'slap in the face' by Princess Diana's personal aide ‌ But Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sensationally quit royal duties in 2020 for a new life in California. They've since carried out TV work - with a large deal with Netflix - and Harry has released his controvesial memoirs Spare. It's Spare, though, that fuelled the tensions between Harry and William. With TV work seemingly drying up in the US, critics have suggested Prince Harry may need to overcome - or ease - the tensions to return to The Firm instead. Hints, including Harry and Meghan's decision to include the titles HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) as well as the surname Sussex on passport applications for little Archie and Lillibet, have emerged recently. And Mr Wilson, a writer with several decades' experience, continued in today's Daily Mail: "All those who have William's best interests at heart – and this must include everyone who wants a bright future for the monarchy – must be begging him to extend some kind of olive branch to his wayward, disloyal and maddening younger sibling... If Harry and his father find a way to be reconciled, that would be a fine thing. But it is the next reign – that of William V – that is likely to be longer and of far more consequence. "It's no exaggeration to say that this row could one day begin the process that leads to a republic. And that could come much sooner than we royalists might like to admit." Mr Wilson's opinion column comes as it is understood Duke of Sussex wishes to avoid "ambushing" the royals in a bid to maintain regular communication with his cancer-battling father. The olive branch came as senior staff for the King's estranged son spoke with a palace official of a wish for a 'roadmap for more regular communication' with his family.

King Charles and Prince Harry aides 'peace summit' part of 'charm offensive by the Sussexes to turn around their negative public image'

A meeting between King Charles and Prince Harry 's senior aides came amid a charm offensive by the Sussexes to turn around their negative public image, the Mail understands. Harry and Meghan's new chief of communications, Meredith Maines, met with Tobyn Andreae, the King's communications secretary, at the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) a three-minute walk from Clarence House, the monarch's London residence on Wednesday. Also present was Liam Maguire, who runs the Sussexes' PR team in the UK. Images of the rendezvous raised hopes of a reconciliation between Harry, 40, and his father, 76. The extraordinary summit came after Ms Maines, who is head of Harry's household in Montecito, California, flew to the UK earlier in the week for a series of meetings alongside Mr Maguire, their new 'UK and Europe communications manager'. These included British business and charitable partners, as well as a host of London-based press and television journalists. Their itinerary suggests that the couple - Harry in particular - are launching a new charm offensive on the UK in a bid to turn around their negative public image. The Mail understands it was subsequently suggested that a meeting with Buckingham Palace's director of communications, Mr Andreae, might be possible while Ms Maines was in the UK. This is not as surprising as it might initially seem. The extraordinary summit came after Ms Maines, who is head of Harry's household in Montecito, California, flew to the UK earlier in the week for a series of meetings alongside Mr Maguire, their new 'UK and Europe communications manager (pictured) Even after the Sussexes' acrimonious departure from the Royal family, tentative 'lines of communication' were kept open between the palace press office and the duke and duchess' PR team on occasional matters of importance. However in recent years these have all but dwindled out in the wake of Harry's repeated and increasingly vitriolic attacks on his family, as well as the institution of the monarchy. His latest, with the BBC, in which he blamed his recent decisive defeat in the British courts over his ongoing security in the UK on an 'establishment stitch-up' and insensitively raised the issue of how long his father has to live, went down extremely badly in royal circles. While understandably wary, it is understood that the palace believed a tentative meeting was sensible in the circumstances - if only to re-open those channels once again with yet another new Sussex PR team, following another series of enforced departures both in California and the UK. There was 'considerable surprise' and a 'weary resignation' amongst senior courtiers to see details and pictures of Wednesday's meeting, which was such a closely-guarded secret, published in the media at the weekend. Senior officials on all sides have repeatedly declined to say whether Prince William's team at Kensington Palace were aware that the meeting was going ahead, even if they were not represented. One source stressed to the Mail that the relationship between father and son was 'inevitably different' to that of the siblings. It has also been noted that while angry and not wishing at present to make any sort of personal overtures to his brother, William has on a number of occasions over the years made magnanimous gestures of kindness towards him, despite huge provocation, including inviting Harry and Meghan to meet mourners and collect flowers at Windsor Castle following the death of Queen Elizabeth. A source said the summit was only the 'first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction' Harry is next due back in the UK in September for the annual WellChild events, raising the prospect of meeting his father for the first time in 18 months. The 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham is another opportunity for a public reconciliation. The Duke is said to have sent email invitations to Buckingham Palace in the hope that it will give the King sufficient time to fit the event into his busy schedule. While the meeting was significant, it is understood it was largely to 'open a channel of communication' after Harry said in a BBC interview his father would not speak to him, and to discuss how to avoid media clashes and conflicts around calendar dates. Harry and Meghan are said to be frustrated after the meeting was caught on camera in pictures published by the Mail on Sunday. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex denied leaking details of the rendezvous.

Love Island bombshell Emma shares 'plans to pull' ex Harry as Helena oblivious

Love Island star Emma told Andrada she and Harry were 'meant to be endgame' in a chat that bothered viewers at home Love Island bombshell Emma sat down with Andrada to discuss what it's really like living with her ex Harry while he's coupled up with Helena. The star insisted she wasn't there to get back with Harry, but her recent conversation about her and Harry being ' endgame ' had fans rushing to social media to complain. After having a chat with Harry, she told Andrada: "It was just interesting, I can just tell he's not happy where he is. I just think it's so hard because we love each other, right? That's a really deep kind of love, but we're both like no, we know it doesn't work, we know it doesn't work." ‌ She went on to claim: "I don't think there's any point in trying again… but I think it's hard for him when I'm here. He can compare. He's seeing how this one behaves and this one behaves, and then there's me and we were supposed to be endgame." ‌ Emma believes 'something could be clicking' for Harry and he's slowly realising the women in the Spanish villa aren't "the perfect fit for him". The contestant continued: "I think if I was to say to Harry 'let's give it another go' he would be definitely open to it." When Andrada asked whether she'd give their romance another shot, Emma said: "I don't think I can. I can't." ‌ Andrada, unconvinced, said: "I feel like you do want to." Fans were skeptical of Emma and rushed to X/ Twitter to share their thoughts. One user said: "I am now convinced Emma has went into the villa to get back with Harry," and another posted: "Emma has given me the ick. Giving it all that saying she didn't come in for Harry…" ‌ "Harry's ex needs to go, it's enough now," one posted while one user commented: "Emma is literally only in the villa to try and get Harry back and it's so painfully obvious to the point it's boring." Meanwhile, Harry and Emma had a private chat by the firepit. Emma told her ex: "I don't think anyone has any, like, gauge on how deep our relationship actually was. I don't even want to upset the girls like if either of them saw us talking like this it's not nice is it? We're so comfortable." Harry, seemingly uninterested, responded with one word: "Dangerously." Things got weirder when Emma raised her arms and asked Harry: "Do you want a sniff? Yeah you do... I know you like to smell them." ‌ He later admitted: "It took everything not to sniff your armpit there", before adding: "It took all of me."
