Rajeeve launches Layam Housing project in Idukki
Industries Minister P. Rajeeve said under the housing project, the government would provide ₹50,000 for renovating existing layams and ₹2 lakh for constructing new ones. The government had allotted ₹10 crore in the last two Budgets for the project.
The Minister said the establishment of the plantation directorate had brought in changes in the plantation sector in the State. After setting up the directorate, the government had directed the Indian Institute of Management- Kozhikode to study issues in the plantation sector.
'The IIMK had submitted a report to the government and after its approval, the recommendations will be implemented in the plantation sector,' Mr. Rajeeve said.
Officials said 83 layams had been selected for renovation under the project in Idukki and works on 10 units at AVT Karadikkuzhi Estate, near Peerumade, had been completed. Mr. Rajeeve inaugurated the housing project at Karadikkuzhi on Monday.

Kunnukara panchayat gets govt nod to set up food processing park
Kochi: A food processing park is set to come up at Kunnukara grama panchayat in Kalamassery constituency, with state govt granting administrative sanction for the project. Industries minister P Rajeeve said the 37.5-acre park will open new avenues for farmers by ensuring better value addition and market access for their produce. The minister made the announcement while inaugurating Farmers' Day celebrations, organized by Alangad Krishi Bhavan, at Kottappuram KEMH School on Sunday. He said in private sector, LuLu Group will establish a food processing facility on HMT campus in Kalamassery with an investment of around Rs 500 crore. "Once operational, the project will help increase agricultural income by connecting farm produce with modern processing and value-addition facilities. It will significantly strengthen agricultural economy of the state," Rajeeve said. According to Rajeeve, agricultural revival efforts in Kalamassery have proved successful, with paddy cultivation reintroduced across more than 1,000 acres. Alongside paddy, farmers in Alangad have diversified into production of jaggery, arrowroot powder and sweet potato powder, which are now reaching local market. According to officials from Kunnukara panchayat, food processing park is expected to attract private investment and create large-scale employment opportunities. The facility is also expected to enhance storage, processing and distribution capabilities for a variety of crops, giving farmers greater stability against market fluctuations. The minister said combined impact of the upcoming park and existing agricultural projects would help rebuild confidence in farming and make it a sustainable livelihood in the region. HC order paves way for disabled bank staffer's promotion after 5 yrs
1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has directed a public sector bank to give a physically disabled man working with the bank his promotion within 45 days, which was held back for nearly five years. It also directed the bank to give him a posting in Kolkata where he can have a support system. However, the division bench of justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De on Aug 14 directed that he would not get arrears of pay from the date of his restoration of promotion but his seniority and pay would be made on the basis of the post where he has been promoted. Anirban Pal joined the bank in 2005. In 2015, he met with an accident, resulting in 70% disability. In 2016, Pal did not participate in the promotion process (from Scale-III officer to Scale-IV) fearing transfer from Kolkata, but when he saw his two other colleagues with physical disabilities getting promoted without transfer, he applied. In Oct 2018, he was promoted but transferred to Patna. Leak of complaint submitted to CPI(M) Polit Bureau triggers political controversy
A political controversy appears to be brewing over the media leak of a 'confidential complaint' purportedly submitted to the Polit Bureau (PB) of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] by a Kozhikode-based businessperson. The controversial letter reportedly implicated a group of CPI(M) leaders, including former Ministers, in financial scams centred around a U.K.-based businessperson from Kerala. The complaint emerged in the public domain on Sunday after the NRI businessperson adduced it as evidence in a libel suit filed by him against his rival and some sections of the media in a Delhi court. Graft charges The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on the somewhat knotty controversy riddled with accusations of financial shenanigans, corruption, money laundering and nepotism in an attempt to put the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on the defensive. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan demanded a clarification from the party and the government on the veracity of the accusations raised by the Kozhikode-based businessperson. Mr. Satheesan said the crux of the litigation appeared to be bitter feuding between two business rivals for the patronage of powerful CPI(M) leaders. He noted financial transactions involving the next of kin of CPI(M) leaders might be at the root of the scandal. Nevertheless, Mr. Satheesan stated, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan owed the public an explanation. He said the presence of the U.K.-based businessperson at the CPI(M)'s 24th party conference in Madurai in April, and his attendance at the Kerala Loka Sabha conference added to the political intrigue. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, stated that the sensational leak was mystifying and appeared to signal that 'something was rotten' in the CPI(M) 's State leadership. He said the scandal had the contours of official corruption with international ramifications and hidden rivalries within the CPI(M) leadership. Mr. Joseph demanded an investigation. 'Calls for inquiry' BJP former State president K. Surendran said the accuser had alleged in the letter that the NRI businessperson's paper company registered in Chennai had profited from government projects. 'If the accusations are true, they warranted an inquiry under the anti-money laundering and foreign exchange management laws,' he said. The CPI(M) was yet to formally react to the BJP and Congress's accusations.
