Most farm murder victims in South Africa are BLACK
'The history of farm murders in the country has always been distorted and reported in an unbalanced way; the truth is that farm murders have always included African people in more numbers,' Mchunu said.
Mchunu made the remarks, when he was presenting the fourth quarter crime statistics of the previous financial year (1 January 2025 – 31 March 2025) in Pretoria, on Friday.
The report showed a notable decrease in farm attacks, with six incidents recorded in the fourth quarter, compared to 12 in the previous quarter.
The victims included two farm owners, two farm employees, one farm manager, and one farm dweller.
While the South African Police Service (SAPS) does not categorise crime statistics by race, Mchunu addressed the racial aspect in response to recent claims of a 'white genocide' in the country.
'The two farm owners that were murdered during the fourth quarter were African and not white. Further to that, the two farm employees and one farm manager were also African – it is the one farm dweller that was white.
'Last quarter, we reported that a total of 12 farm murders had been reported, with one farm owner having been murdered.
'Notable progress has been made in respect of investigations into these cases, and a number of arrests have been made,' Mchunu said.
Mchunu reiterated the SAPS's commitment to prioritising all types of crimes with urgency; as well as to conduct thorough investigations to ensure that justice is ultimately served.
He further highlighted the government's commitment to the National Rural Safety Strategy, which aims to create a safe and secure environment in rural areas.
'We have appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee multiple times to account for our efforts. The National Rural Safety Strategy is designed to create a safe and secure environment in rural areas, and we are committed to fully implementing it.
'As from this year, when we release the first quarter results, we will include a number of other categories of crime in the country, to show a fuller picture. For an example, killings in rural and urban areas, instead of just on commercial farms, but for now, our statistics are based on commercial farms,' the Minister said.
Mchunu also sought to dispel misconceptions about so-called 'land grabbing' in South Africa.
While confirming that land invasions do occur, he rejected the notion that they reflect government policy.
'Land invasions are not government policy but are by and large acts of desperation for land by African people who find themselves landless and in need to settle. It is sporadic and it remains unlawful, hence the cases and investigations thereof,' he explained.
Mchunu stressed that the policy of expropriation without compensation is a lawful and systematic effort to resolve the issue of landlessness.
'My colleague in the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, [Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso], has expressed concern about the misuse of the term 'land grab' and will provide further clarification next week,' Mchunu said.

Police probe murder of rugby player in Kariega

Nairobi slum pageant gives platform to voiceless

A stone's throw from Kibera, Kenya's largest informal settlement, a young woman glides down a spotlit catwalk, her delicate white dress at odds with the fake blood splattered across it and the tape covering her lips reading: "Stop, silence, gender-based violence." The annual "Mr and Ms Kibera" pageant in Nairobi, gleefully attended by hundreds, is about more than just the contestants' looks -- it provides a much-needed platform for expression and protest. For many of those taking part, the cool August evening was a chance to voice support for youth-led demonstrations and freedom of speech or to condemn violence against women. Gender-based violence in the east African country has been labelled a "femicide" by activists, who have urged the government to act. Waves of anti-government demonstrations have also taken place -- the latest in June and July killing 65 people -- with rights groups alleging police brutality, a long-running issue in Kenya. At the pageant, one contestant's tank top simply read: "Stop killing us." Their speeches and protest acts are as key to their success in the contest as their appearance. Now in its 20th year, the pageant has offered scores of young people from the neighbourhood -- where many still lack clean water and regular electricity -- the chance to step out of a cycle of poverty, violence and crime. "Many people don't see anything positive coming from a slum," said founder Ben Ooko. "Yet, there are hidden gems in our community just waiting to be discovered." The pageant teaches participants how to express themselves in public and build self-confidence, he said. "We are looking at young people who are able to stand up and speak for the challenges of other young people," he added. Twenty years ago, Kepha Ngito became the first Mr Kibera. Thanks in part to a scholarship from the pageant, Ngito was able to move off the streets and is now a development consultant. Despite no longer living in Kibera, he still comes back to help young people stuck in what he calls an "environment of indignity". The pageant offers people a chance to demonstrate their potential, he said. "We want to show the world that we have our own definition of beauty and that definition is resilience," he said. Another former participant Pauline Akiniyi, 30, who took part in 2016, has gone on to open a women's shelter in Kibera. Towards the end of the evening, the winners are announced, with the crown going to 21-year-old Rozelda Kim. "It's not just a beauty pageant... It's a microphone to speak louder," she said. Estcourt municipal employee found guilty of R5 million fraud
An employee of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, has been found guilty of fraud involving the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). The worker, identified as Mr KZH Mchunu, was implicated in fraudulent motor vehicle licence disc renewal transactions amounting to over R5 million. The matter came to light during an internal disciplinary hearing, following investigations by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). According to the RTMC, the transactions were conducted off-site using Mchunu's NaTIS login credentials. None of the money from these irregular transactions was deposited into the municipality's bank account. Mchunu faced charges of gross dishonesty, abuse of authority, and bringing the municipality into disrepute. He attempted to defend himself by claiming the NaTIS system had been hacked. However, RTMC's expert testimony dismissed this claim, confirming that there was no evidence of a system breach. In this case, only the accused's credentials were used,' the RTMC explained. The presiding officer concluded that Mchunu failed to account for how his confidential login details were allegedly leaked. He was found guilty on all charges. Neither the RTMC nor the municipality have disclosed the disciplinary sanctions or possible criminal proceedings to follow.
