It was once agenda-setting, appointment viewing. What went wrong for Q+A?

At its best, it helped set the national agenda.
'When management moved Q+A to Thursdays [in 2021], before shifting it back to Mondays, it disrupted what's meant to be a habit-based show,' says one high-profile ABC presenter. 'Cutting the number of episodes and putting the show on hiatus in the middle of the year only made things worse. It's hard enough to attract viewers as it is, without expecting them to chase you across different time slots or come back to you after a mid-year break that makes no sense.'
One producer notes that Q+A led the way in terms of social media innovation, running a live feed of Twitter comments from viewers before archiving its account on the platform, now called X.
'Before Twitter became a sewer, it was a huge asset to the show,' the producer says. 'But by 2020, when Hamish [Macdonald] took over as host, it became so bad that he had to leave the platform. Stan Grant [who was appointed Q+A host in 2022] copped the most horrible, racist abuse, and you can imagine all the vile comments directed at the female presenters.'
Peter Meakin – who spent five decades leading news and current affairs coverage at the Seven, Nine and Ten networks – suspects social media made some politicians more cautious (and therefore, more likely to bore viewers).

'It used to be a sport for them to go on air and spar with each other,' Meakin says. 'You might get a few letters saying, 'That was disgraceful', but not the instant groundswell of hatred you get now. They're more scared of putting a foot wrong.'
In a statement, ABC news director Justin Stevens said, 'Discontinuing the program at this point is no reflection on anyone on the show. We always need to keep innovating and renewing.'
Stevens said the ABC would produce more news documentaries, and would make its Your Say election initiative – which allows audiences to suggest questions for politicians – a permanent feature.
ABC managing director Hugh Marks later announced around 40 redundancies and 10 contract positions that would end early. He also flagged changes to the audio division, separating the sport and capital city network teams into a simpler structure. The ABC's content division will be renamed ABC Screen, led by content director Jennifer Collins.
But McEvoy insists the national broadcaster must do more to fill the void created by Q+A's cancellation.
'The ABC always needs to be trying new things, but I don't think an online survey can really give Australian citizens the chance to question decision-makers and politicians – or hold them to account,' he says. 'Engaging Australian citizens in a moderated but open discussion on national issues is a core part of the ABC's obligations as a public service broadcaster … the toxicity of platforms like X that encourage outrage makes the role of a moderated forum like Q+A even more important.'
Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, who was once a frequent guest on the program, believes Q+A was at its most compelling when it resembled a dinner party.
'It was all about having the right mixture of guests,' he says. 'In its heyday, if you were interested in Australian politics and you didn't watch it, you were concerned you might miss out on something.'

Since Jones left Q+A in 2019, the program has had several hosts including Macdonald, David Speers, Virginia Trioli, Stan Grant and Karvelas.
'All formats, after a time, start to feel a little tired,' says Trioli, who now hosts the ABC's Creative Types arts program. 'But I'm a huge fan of the Q+A format. It was a mighty program and one of the most important in terms of news, current affairs and public discussion in this country.
'People say they want accountability and they like to feel that issues are being put directly to politicians, but I think sometimes the audience can struggle with the reality of that,' she adds. 'You will get arguments, or politicians spinning their wheels and avoiding the question, while the host is trying to get them to answer – and that can make things awkward, uncomfortable or combative. It's a crapshoot every time, but the producers worked their guts out to do an amazing job.'

Australia could miss out on its next great invention plus significant economic benefits, with one prominent business leader calling for an increase in research and development spending so we no longer lag behind other developed countries. Business Council of Australia chief executive Bran Black says the Albanese government should help boost public and private spending into research and development from 1.7 per cent of GDP to 3 per cent. As it stands, Australia is dragging behind the other OECD countries which on average invest 2.7 per cent of GDP into funding and developing innovating ideas. Australia was also significantly behind the United States and South Korea which invest 3.59 per cent and 5.21 per cent respectively. As a result, the country was missing out on the economic returns, with Mr Black pointing to analysis from the CSIRO which found that every dollar invested in R&D offered a $3 return to GDP. 'They're doing that because they see that the economic return, the dividend to their economy associated with these types of investment makes it worthwhile,' he said. More and better innovation also had the power to make 'life better' too, said Mr Black, pointing to world-leading Australian inventions such as the cochlear implant, Google Maps, pacemakers and even Wi-Fi. 'R&D when done right changes the way we live, every single day.' While sectors such as agriculture, health, renewables and the resources sector were areas where Australia had 'existing advantages,' he said there was also 'scope for opportunity' in more left field areas like quantum computing. Figures released by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources tip Australia's technology sector is set to contribute $244bn a year to the economy by 2031, a rapid increase from the current $167bn. Increasing Australia's quantum capabilities is set to amplify the growth of the sector. 'Who would have thought that Australia would be at the absolute forefront of global research with respect to this cutting edge technology, and yet we are,' he said. Speaking to the importance of R&D, Mr Black said analysis from the CSIRO found Australia stood to receive a $3 boost to GDP for every dollar invested in R&D. Mr Black said boosting Australian innovation was a key way to expose Australia to new market, create new jobs and develop emerging industries. In addition for a 5 per cent target on increased funding from the public and private sector, the BCA is also calling for a better tax incentives to encourage domestic and international to invest in Australian projects, plus a publicly accessible National Researcher Directory to help connect industry with research expertise. 'Ultimately what that means is that R&D is an excellent way of driving productivity (and) productivity is the main determinant for how we can deliver real wages growth across our economy,' he said. Labor is undertaking a strategic review into its R&D processes, with the government set to receive the recommendations by the end of the year. Former industry and science minister Ed Husic also acknowledged in October last year that R&D funding in Australia was at a 'sorry state,' and said the government was 'very focused on fixing up our languishing national R&D spend'.

Jacob Greber to replace Laura Tingle as political editor on 7.30

ABC's flagship current affairs program 7.30 has announced the replacement for star political reporter Laura Tingle, who has become the national broadcaster's global affairs editor. Jacob Greber, who joined the ABC as chief digital poetical correspondent from The Australian Financial Review less than a year ago, will take on the high-profile role from July 7. The announcement was made by 7.30 host Sarah Ferguson, describing it as a 'very special moment'. ' With an almost 30-year career in journalism covering politics, economics and world affairs – all the things that we want – he's been a foreign correspondent as well, and got his start working as a copyboy in the Canberra Press Gallery,' she said. 'You can't beat that. Jacob, a very big, warm welcome aboard.' Greber's almost 30-year career spanned the globe, first working in Brisbane at the Courier-Mail covering state politics, before moving to Switzerland to cover the country's global banks and the European economy for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, and later Bloomberg News in Zurich. Of the appointment, Greber said he was excited to step into the role, adding the population 'demands clarity and insight' about the current political landscape. 'It's an incredible time to join 7.30 with Sarah Ferguson and the team,' he said in a statement from the ABC. 'Our audience rightly demands clarity and insight about the people who govern us and the challenges we face as a nation.' Tingle, who had been with 7.30 since February 2018, announced she would take up the role as global affairs editor last month. She is set to begin her role later this year, and will replace John Lyons, who was announced as the ABC Americas editor in February. Greber wished her the best in her new role. 'I also salute Laura Tingle,' he said. 'An absolute class act and fearless force of nature. I'm humbled and thrilled to pick up where she's left off.'
