Ukraine announces loss of F-16 fighter jet

Saba Yemena day ago

Kyiv - Saba:
Ukraine announced on Sunday that its air force lost another F-16 fighter jet last night and that its pilot was killed.
The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement: "Tonight, pilot First Class Colonel Maksym Ustimenko (born 1993) was killed in an F-16 crash."
The statement explained that the pilot was participating in "responding to a major attack" before his aircraft sustained damage and began to lose altitude. Ustimenko was able to divert the aircraft away from a populated area but was unable to eject.
Ukrainian forces lost another F-16 in similar circumstances last May, and another F-16 crashed last April amid suspicions that it was shot down by friendly fire.
The Wall Streeter Journal previously reported that Ukraine shot down one of its F-16s in the summer of 2024 because Washington withheld from Kyiv a critical technology related to the Link 16 identification system, which transmits information about the aircraft's location to military personnel on the ground, enabling them to distinguish between friendly and enemy aircraft.

Kremlin: Date for third round of negotiations with Kyiv not yet set

Moscow - Saba: Dmitry Peskov, the official spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated on Sunday that Moscow hopes the dates for the third round of negotiations with Kyiv will be determined soon. When asked whether any new meetings had been scheduled in the near future, Peskov replied, "No, they have not been scheduled yet. We are waiting for the third round of talks. We hope the date will be clarified soon." Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced last Friday that he had held discussions with the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, noting that the parties "have the willingness" to hold a third round of negotiations. In an interview with the Turkish channel "Haber," Fidan added, "I communicated with the parties yesterday, and the implementation of the decisions from the second round—such as the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of fallen soldiers—is being finalized." He continued, "If the promises made to each other are fulfilled, we see the parties' desire for a third round of talks. The Russian side has already stated this. We are ready to host the negotiations. The most important thing is to prevent the outbreak of conflict." Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (International)

Ukrainian Air Defenses Shoot Down an F-16 Fighter

Kyiv - Saba: Ukrainian parliamentarian Marianna Bezuglaya admitted that air defenses shot down an F-16 fighter jet, citing the faulty IFF system. Following reports of the death of a Ukrainian pilot flying the plane, the parliamentarian said on her Telegram channel, as reported by the Russian RT channel, "The IFF system is still not fully operational." She noted that the results of the investigation into the crash of the previous F-16 have also not been published. Previously, the Ukrainian Air Force announced the death of 26-year-old pilot Pavlo Ivanov while carrying out a combat mission on April 12, a claim also confirmed by Volodymyr Zelensky. The location and circumstances of the pilot's death have not been determined. The cause of the crash has also not been reported. On August 29, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces acknowledged the loss of the first F-16 fighter jet transferred to Ukraine, and a special commission is investigating the causes of the incident. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that the F-16 crashed due to pilot error. Ukrainian parliament member Marianna Bezoglyaya stated that the fighter jet was shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Patriot air defense system due to a lack of coordination between units. The exact number of F-16s supplied to Ukraine by Western countries remains unknown. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has so far confirmed the loss of only one of these aircraft.
