University of Manitoba music prof charged in historical sexual assault of teen student
Winnipeg police said on Friday the 15-year-old girl received classes from the then-37-year-old professor between Dec. 17, 2007 and March 11, 2010.
Grooming of the teen began during the lessons and sexual assaults happened off campus, police said.
The girl ended the relationship and the professor tried to reinitiate contact by repeatedly emailing her, police said.
The girl has since moved away from Winnipeg. She reported the incident in February to police in another jurisdiction, who contacted Winnipeg investigators.
The Manitoba Prosecution Service authorized charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation, police said.
Oleg Pokhanovski, 55, turned himself in at the Winnipeg police headquarters on July 29. He was arrested and detained in custody, police said.
Pokhanovski's U of M online staff biography describes him as an "accomplished virtuosic violinist, pianist, arranger, and music educator" and "in-demand adjudicator at music festivals all across Canada."

A Saskatoon man has been convicted of second-degree murder for the second time. Brandin Brick, 33, has once again been found guilty in the 2018 killing of James Chaisson. Justice Keene said the mechanics of the shooting, as described by Brick, 'defy physics.' The judge ruled the Crown had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Brick 'had the state of mind required for murder.' Brick is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 15. Second-degree murder comes with a life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 10 years.

Fredericton Police arrest six, block off northside neighbourhood and city park
Six people were arrested in Fredericton, N.B. following a targeted enforcement operation. The Fredericton Police Force says six individuals were taken into custody Thursday morning, following an alert for people to avoid a northside neighbourhood and nearby city park. The force issued an alert on social media just before 8 a.m. telling people to stay away from the Pine Street area, extending the alert about an hour later to include Carleton Park. Police said there was no threat to public safety. The alert was rescinded just after 10 a.m. Police confirmed three men, and three women were taken into custody for what it described as a 'targeted enforcement operation.' Woman groped by stranger in Burnaby's Central Park, police say

A woman walking in Burnaby's Central Park was sexually assaulted by a male stranger Wednesday evening, according to authorities. Mounties received a report just before 7:30 p.m. that a woman had been groped near the 5900 block of Patterson Avenue, the Burnaby RCMP said in a statement Thursday. 'The victim had been walking alone on the trails, when a man approached her, touching her chest and vaginal area. After the incident, the suspect ran away to another area of the park,' the statement from the detachment said. 'The victim and suspect are not known to each other.' The woman was not physically injured, police added. Foot and bike patrols on trails in the popular park are being ramped up in response, according to the statement. 'Our investigative teams are actively working to identify the suspect in this incident,' said Supt. Sunny Parmar, with the Burnaby RCMP. 'Public safety remains our priority.' The suspect is described as a white man between 35 and 45 years old, with a slim build standing 5'6' tall. He has brown eyes and no facial hair and was wearing a white hoodie, black shorts and a 'multicoloured windbreaker' when the alleged assault occurred, police said.
