Tyler Betsey's next home after Cincinnati Bearcats basketball will be at Syracuse
Another of the nine Cincinnati Bearcats who entered the college basketball transfer portal has found a home.
On Friday May 2, 6-foot-8 forward Tyler Betsey committed to Syracuse, posting his plans on Instagram. Betsey played in 34 of UC's 35 games and averaged 3.3 points, shooting 35.7% from the field and 32.1% from three-point range, where 81 of his 112 shots were hoisted.

Betsey's season-high was nine points against Grambling last Dec. 22. He made two treys in a game eight times, the last being in a home win vs. Utah Feb. 11. He played in every game but the loss to Kansas Jan. 11

The two-time Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year played at St. Thomas More where former Bearcat Cane Broome was one of the coaches. He averaged 23 points and six rebounds and was a four-star recruit, eventually choosing UC over Alabama and the Connecticut Huskies.
Tyler Betsey had a season-high nine points for UC against Grambling Dec. 23 at Fifth Third Arena.
Betsey, who played just five minutes in the two games at the College Basketball Crown went into the portal April 8. Like some others, he said he would still consider UC, but in the end, none of the departing Bearcats returned.
Only Betsey's friend, walk-on J.J. Rembert, is uncommitted out of the nine departures. Dan Skillings Jr. is at Baylor, Josh Reed at Penn State, Dillon Mitchell at St. John's, Arrinten Page chose Northwestern, Rayvon Griffith signed with Kent State, Connor Hickman will play at Charleston if he gets a medical waiver and walk-on C.J. Anthony is with Iona.

UC was 19-16 last season. Syracuse, out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, was 14-19. In his one game against an ACC opponent, Betsey had six points on a pair of treys at Georgia Tech last Nov. 23.

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Prized infield prospect Ronny Mauricio was called up from the minors by the New York Mets on Tuesday and put in the starting lineup at third base against the Los Angeles Dodgers. His promotion came after third baseman Mark Vientos strained his right hamstring late in Monday night's victory over the Dodgers. He went on the injured list Tuesday. Mauricio was slated to bat seventh. 'I'm feeling great,' he said in the Mets clubhouse before the game. 'I'm the same person I was before my surgeries.' Rated for years among the top 100 prospects in baseball and a jewel in the organization, Mauricio made his major league debut in September 2023 and batted .248 with two home runs, nine RBIs and seven stolen bases in 26 games that year. But months later, the switch-hitter tore a knee ligament playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and missed the 2024 season while recovering from multiple operations. 'None of us wanted to rush that process," Mauricio said. 'There were some setbacks in my recovery. We just wanted to take it slower to make sure everything was right.' Mauricio said the year away was frustrating, but helped him in many ways. 'I was able to focus more on my body, my ability as a person. I was able to improve on my English as well," he said, explaining that he took online language classes. Finally healthy again, the 24-year-old Mauricio has played at three minor league levels this season as he finished rehabbing and began gaining regular game reps. He was reinstated from the injured list May 17 and optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. 'I think I'm the same hitter,' he said. 'The biggest difference is I now have more knowledge of the game.' Mauricio has been on a tear at the plate recently, hitting .515 with three homers, eight RBIs, four steals and a 1.382 OPS in 39 plate appearances over nine games at Syracuse. Vientos stumbled out of the batter's box on a 10th-inning groundout Monday night and fell to the turf. When he got up, he grabbed for his right hamstring. A natural shortstop, Mauricio has played several other positions in the minors and majors. He started 21 big league games at second base in 2023, and five at third. In other moves Tuesday, right-hander Frankie Montas was transferred to Triple-A Syracuse on a rehab assignment. In his last seven games before Friday night's game against Iowa, Mauricio had gone 14-for-25 (.560) with three home runs and seven RBIs. The infielder is ramping back up to regular reps. He has played in three consecutive contests, but has yet to make the jump to playing three days in a row. Still, Mauricio has the Mets' attention. 'He's doing a great job. Number one is health and getting him back and building up the volume. 'There aren't specific, 'You need to check this box. You need to check that box,' ' Stearns said. 'I think it's more subjective. Is he comfortable playing the field regularly? Does he look right? Offensively, it sure does seem he got himself right pretty quickly, which is very impressive. He certainly has development left in his offensive game. He's likely never going to be the type of guy with Juan Soto-type plate discipline. But there are probably some strides he can make there.' Mauricio had long been hyped as a potential starter for the Mets and he showed promise during his 2023 call-up, hitting .292 with an .852 OPS. That momentum, though, came crashing down after he suffered a torn ACL in Dec. 2023 during a Dominican Winter League game and also underwent a procedure to remove scar tissue. Now that he's healthy again, Mauricio is trying to work his way back to Flushing. He's been spending time at second base and third base during his minor-league stint.
