Isco tries to lead Real Betis to its 1st European title in Conference League final vs. Chelsea
WROCLAW, Poland (AP) — It's been a breakthrough season for Francisco 'Isco' Alarcon with Real Betis, and it could culminate with him leading the Spanish club to its first European title.
The Betis captain could be the one lifting the historic trophy on Wednesday if his team defeats Chelsea in the Conference League final.
'Chelsea and ourselves are two good teams with some great players. The game tomorrow is very important for everybody, but I believe what Betis has is a lot of excitement, and the opportunity to win a first final is something historic for us,' Isco said Tuesday.
The Seville club won the Spanish league in 1934-35, as well as three Copas del Rey — most recently in 2022 — but it is yet to triumph at the European level, where it had never gone past the quarterfinals in any competition.
'Believing is the first step to victory,' the 33-year-old playmaker said. 'It is going to be a very difficult game, but we trust our squad. We have proved that we are capable of beating any team, and we are looking forward to this final and bringing joy to our fans, who have deserved it the most.'
Isco's superb season with Betis earned him a spot back in Spain's national team after a long absence. He was called back to Spain's national team by coach Luis de la Fuente on Monday for the Nations League semifinal against France on June 5 in Stuttgart. He hadn't been with Spain's squad since 2019.
After nearly a decade with Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles and three Spanish league titles, Isco returned to his roots in southern Spain, first with Sevilla in 2022-23 and then with Betis, where he has been thriving for the last two seasons.

Betis also has the experience of coach Manuel Pellegrini, who won the Premier League title with Manchester City in 2014 and later was in charge of West Ham at a time when now-Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca was his assistant.
Betis also has a Conference League winner in its squad: midfielder Pablo Fornals, who won the competition with West Ham in 23.
'When you are close to a final,' Isco said, 'you always visualize what might happen, but you have to focus on the game at hand. This is Betis' first final, and it would be a dream to win it, but it will be very difficult.'

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees had been missing their cool Jazz. Sidelined since April 29 by a strained right oblique, Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove Tanner Bibee's first pitch of the seventh inning toward the right-center stands. He shuffled up the first-base line, holding his bat, convinced it was a tiebreaking home run. And it was, barely, caught by a fan in the first row, 358 feet from home plate. 'Our hitting coach told me a story about Reggie Jackson,' Chisholm said after Tuesday night's 3-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. 'He hit a homer that barely went over the fence. And he was like, `Hey, Reggie, how did you know that was gone?' And he's like, `Well, I hit 567 (actually 563) of them.' So I told my coach, my story is that I've hit 1,000 homers in my dreams, so I had to know that one was gone, right?' Chisholm went 2 for 3, also blooping a fifth-inning single for the Yankees' first hit and scoring on DJ LeMahieu's single. Anthony Volpe went deep six pitches after Chisholm, giving New York back-to-back homers for the fifth time this season. 'Honestly, I pictured a 3 for 3, but I'd take a 2 for 3,' Chisholm said. He returned to third base, his position with the Yankees last year, after making 29 starts at second through April 29, when he got hurt at Baltimore. New York manager Aaron Boone decided to leave LeMahieu at second, where he's started since coming back from a spring training calf injury on May 13. Chisholm didn't complain about the position switch and gushed: 'This is my favorite organization I've ever been a part of.' 'I just want to win. I want a ring,' Chisholm said. 'You got (Aaron) Judge. Sentnor and Biyendolo score 2 each and US women beat Jamaica 4-0
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ally Sentnor and Lynn Biyendolo each scored two goals and the United States beat Jamaica 4-0 on Tuesday night after the team honored longtime defender Becky Sauerbrunn. Sentnor scored in the 19th minute, then formed a heart with her hands in celebration. She scored her second off a deflection 10 minutes later. The 21-year-old 2024 U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year, who now has four international goals, credited her teammates. 'They're really easy to play with at moving the ball,' Sentnor said. 'I'm still trying to work to get better for them.' Biyendolo scored in the 60th minute, three minutes after coming into the game as a substitute. She added a second in the 88th minute off a cross from Avery Patterson. Biyendolo has 24 career goals. 'I do feel like, there is so much more to us than there was 12 months ago. Reds ace Hunter Greene to undergo MRI after feeling groin discomfort in win over Brewers
CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds ace Hunter Greene will undergo an MRI on his right groin Wednesday morning after being pulled after five innings during Tuesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said after the 4-2 win that Greene felt discomfort on his last couple of pitches in the fifth. Greene has made three starts since a 15-day stint on the injured list last month due to a groin strain he sustained May 7 during a start in Atlanta. He was warming up for the fourth inning when he summoned a trainer. 'It's not as bad (as what he felt in Atlanta) but it still grabbed,' Greene said. 'It's not concerning, it's frustrating. I want to be out there and compete. I feel like as a pitcher, you do your best when you're in a groove and you're going out there every fifth or sixth day. It just makes it a little bit more difficult when you're trying to overcome some stuff.' Greene — who made his first All-Star appearance last season — is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this year. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed two runs and five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings.
