Questioning Australia's future as Lions opponents is ‘insulting'

Independent31-07-2025
Andy Farrell insisted debate over Australia's future as a British and Irish Lions tour destination was 'insulting'.
The Lions are seeking to complete a series whitewash when the rivals clash for the final time in Sydney on Saturday with Farrell making two changes to his starting XV, bringing in lock James Ryan and wing Blair Kinghorn.
Australian rugby is facing significant challenges on and off the field and is the weakest of the three nations visited by the elite of British and Irish rugby, with South Africa and New Zealand completing the 12-year rotation.
Furthermore, there is growing support for the Lions to visit France because of the strength of their national side and club game, as well as the commercial possibilities.
The Wallabies answered their critics at Melbourne Cricket Ground by taking the second Test to the wire in an all-time classic before falling 2-0 behind in the series when Hugo Keenan struck with 51 seconds left.
When asked if Australia had earned the right to host another tour, Farrell replied: 'It was never off the agenda, in my opinion.
'Every single team, country and province have their ups and downs but Australia – the sporting nation that they are – are always going to come back.
'Have a look at the year they've got coming up. Come the 2027 World Cup they're going to be a force to be reckoned with, 100 per cent.
'It would be tragic not to tour here. We've had a blast. To me its insulting to talk about it in that kind of way.'
Ryan replaces Ollie Chessum amid praise from Farrell for the 'venom' he shows when taking on the unglamorous work up-front, while Kinghorn has been preferred ahead of James Lowe thanks to his 'unpredictability' and the strength of his aerial game in what should be wet and windy conditions at Accor Stadium.
But Farrell's warmest words were reserved for those players who had not participated in the series yet, having fully embraced the task of preparing the Test team to face the Wallabies.
'It actually touches you. It touches you in the sense of how much it means to them,' said Farrell, who by Saturday night will have used 27 players in the three matches against Australia.
'The ones who were celebrating most on Saturday night were the ones who hadn't put the shirt on. That says it all.
'We all came together from day one and said 'the only thing that matters is the squad and that's it, full stop'. So we've all been in this together from day one.'
Farrell's success as Lions head coach – as well as his obvious passion for the concept – makes him overwhelming favourite to lead the next tour to New Zealand, but he is refusing to look beyond attending an Oasis concert at Croke Park upon his return home.
'Would I do this again? Give me a break would you! Let me get through Saturday. I have absolutely loved every single minute and I knew I would because I just love everything that the Lions is about,' he said.
'Thinking about the future is not something that is on my mind until I get home and have a bit of reflection on the whole thing.
'I'm definitely going to Oasis and that's why I'm going home! I'll be taking a few friends. There are a few coaches here that are trying to get on the bandwagon.'

Steve Tandy admits to shock over Louis Rees-Zammit's return to rugby union

New Wales boss Steve Tandy screamed in shock and told his daughter to pass him her phone after she read Louis Rees-Zammit was returning to rugby union. Rees-Zammit has spent the last 18 months in the NFL after announcing in January 2024 that he would retire from rugby in order to pursue his American Football dream. The 32-times capped Wales wing signed an active roster deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season after being part of their practice squad in 2024 – but Tandy now looks set to have the 24-year-old flier at his disposal after he announced his rugby return on social media. 'My oldest daughter told me, that was a bit worrying,' Tandy said at his first press conference as Wales head coach. 'She said 'Zammit's coming home!' And I was like 'Aaaaaargh. Give me the phone!' That was how I found out. 'As a coach, you daydream. Coming back, you're obviously looking at what you've got. And then you look at what you could have. 'It's obviously a great boost for him, the game and the fans. It's great.' Tandy, the first Welshman to coach the national team for 18 years, starts his role on September 1. Wales play Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa in Cardiff in the autumn – and Rees-Zammit could now be involved. 'You can kid yourself that was my impact,' Tandy said of Rees-Zammit's return. 'I think you wouldn't rule anything out. 'Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back. I think it's great for the game. 'He's gone away to experience something new, which is class. I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition. 'The more players we have available to represent our country the better. That's exciting and makes our jobs easier. 'It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging in terms of selection as we've already got some very good back three players.' Rees-Zammit has said there is a 'a load of interest' in his services but his rugby future remains unclear. Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Abi Tierney said: 'I'm over the moon Louis is coming back to rugby because it gives us him for the national team. 'The challenge we've got is we're starting the season in September. You can have a look at what different teams are doing with their salary caps and their players. 'Are we in touch with Louis and trying to find a way in which we can make something work? 'Of course it would be fantastic. But I'm sure he'll have lots of other offers as well.'

Louis Rees-Zammit backed to make Wales return by new coach Steve Tandy - after 24-year-old left American football for rugby

Louis Rees-Zammit has been tipped to make an instant return to Wales duty by new coach Steve Tandy. Rees-Zammit is returning to rugby after failing to break into American football. As reported by Daily Mail Sport, the 24-year-old is set to join rebel league R360 from the summer of 2026. Who the flying wing plays for this season remains unclear but Rees-Zammit is available to represent Wales in November. 'You wouldn't rule anything out,' said Tandy, when asked if Rees-Zammit could come straight back in having not played at Test level since the 2023 World Cup. 'Zammo brings a big effect and excitement. It's great for the game. He's gone away to experience something new, which is class, and I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition.' Wales ended a run of 18 straight Test defeats in Japan last month, so Tandy will start in November with a clean slate.

Louis Rees-Zammit can make immediate Wales return, new coach says

Louis Rees-Zammit could be return to international rugby this autumn having returned from two years playing American football. New Wales head coach Steve Tandy praised the former Wales wing's return as a 'great boost for the game'. Tandy did, however, only learn of the news from his own daughter. Ten days after being appointed as the full-time successor to Warren Gatland, the former Scotland defence coach was told of the Rees-Zammit's decision when his daughter spotted the announcement on social media. 'It was a bit worrying because my 14-year-old daughter told me. 'Zammit's coming home!' she shouted at me,' said Tandy at his media unveiling at the Principality Stadium on Thursday. 'I was like 'Argh, give me the phone!' That was how I found out. Coming back, you're obviously looking at what you've got and you daydream. Then you look at what you could have. It's obviously a great boost for him, the game and the fans. It's great. 'You can kid yourself that it was my impact! Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back.' Telegraph Sport understands that Rees-Zammit does not have a club lined up but that Bristol Bears are among those interested and would be open to beginning negotiations. The 24-year-old finally gave up on his NFL dream earlier this month after failing to play a game at either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite making the active roster of the latter. It comes less than two years after he dropped a bombshell on Welsh rugby a few days before the start of the 2024 Six Nations, by announcing his departure to the United States. He has missed 18 Test matches since joining the American football ranks, 17 of which have been lost. Having scored 14 tries in his 32 appearances before his departure across the Atlantic, his reappearance would be a major boost for his former team-mates. Tandy indicated he would be in the frame straight away for the Autumn Tests against Argentina, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand. 'I think you wouldn't rule anything out,' the new Wales coach said. 'I think his return is great for the game. He's gone away to experience something new, which is class. I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition. 'The more players we have available to represent our country, the better. That's exciting and makes our jobs easier. 'It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging as we've already got some very good back-three players. Adding Zammo into that makes it even more exciting for not only us, but the fans as well.' Tandy officially starts on September 1, and while he says he is currently 'having lots of conversations with lots of people' it is likely he will have Rees-Zammit on speed dial before announcing his squad for the four-match series in November.
