Musk- Trump Feud Poses Serious Threat To NASA, Pentagon Programs: Report

Elon Musk's threat, which he later retracted, to cut off NASA's use of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft would be a huge blow to NASA, depriving the space agency of the only American vehicle capable of transporting astronauts to the International Space Station and dramatically changing how NASA would access the $100 billion orbiting laboratory, The Washington Post has reported.
The threat, posted on X, came during an escalating fight between the wealthiest man in the world and President Donald Trump, after Trump had threatened to cancel all of Musk's company's federal contracts. "Given SpaceX's importance to multiple federal programs, severing those relationships could leave NASA as well as the Pentagon and intelligence agencies in a lurch," noted the report.
Several hours after making the threat, Musk relented, saying in response to a post on X that he should cool off and reconsider: "Ok, we won't decommission Dragon."
Over the years, SpaceX has become a vital contractor, launching sensitive national security payloads such as satellites that provide missile warning, battlefield communication and guide munitions to precise targets, Xinhua news agency reported.
In a statement, Bethany Stevens, NASA's press secretary, did not address how NASA would continue to fly its astronauts to the ISS without SpaceX, writing only that "NASA will continue to execute upon the President's vision for the fulfillment of space. We will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the President's objectives in space are met."
Earlier Elon Musk called for the impeachment of US President Donald Trump and announced the decommissioning of the vital SpaceX programme after accusing that Trump's name is in the Epstein files, according to media reports.
'In light of the President's statement about cancellation of my government contracts, SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately,' Musk said in a post on X.

Elon Musk TOI correspondent from Washington: Elon Musk teased America about forming a new political party even as he dialled down from his spat with MAGA President Donald Trump , deleting a series of posts linking him to the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The Musk climbdown came after Trump declined to engage in a phone call that mediators tried to initiate between the two, and instead threatened to cut off huge federal loans and subsidies to Musk's companies. "We'll take a look at everything. I look at everything. He's got a lot (of) money. He gets a lot of subsidy. So we'll take a look at that. Only if it's fair. Only if it's fair for him and for the country. I would certainly think about it. But it has to be fair,' Trump told reporters in an oblique hint that Musk could be spared punitive action. Trump also dismissed Musk's threat of forming a new political party based on a poll he ran on X, saying he was happy with his own poll numbers that showed support for him and his policies. In a sketchy poll on X, where Musk has more than 220m "followers" but which is boiling with fake accounts and bots, Musk asked, "Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?" The question elicited only 5.6 million online "votes" from 100m views. More than 80 per cent respondents answered in the affirmative. "The people have spoken. Indian astronaut Shukla Axiom-4 mission set for June 10 lift-off, dock at ISS after 28-hour flight
Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three others are set to embark on Axiom Space's fourth human spaceflight from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on June 10 and are likely to dock at the International Space Station on June 11 at about 10 PM IST, after a nearly 28-hour journey. Mr. Shukla, the mission pilot of the Axiom-4 (Ax4) commercial mission to the ISS, will be accompanied by mission commander Peggy Whitson and specialists Tibor Kapu from Hungary and Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland. The Axiom-4 mission will mark India's return to space 41 years after Rakesh Sharma's historic spaceflight onboard Russia's Soyuz mission in 1984. "The crew will travel to the orbiting laboratory on a new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft after launching on the company's Falcon 9 rocket. The targeted docking time is approximately 12:30 p.m. EDT (10:00 p.m. IST), Wednesday, June 11," NASA said in a statement. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan visited Axiom Space last week to review the preparations for the spaceflight. The astronauts have been in quarantine since May 25 to prepare for the trip and have been training ahead of the launch on June 10. "The #Ax4 crew undergoes extensive emergency training, featuring a range of scenarios such as underwater escape drills," Axiom Space said in a post on X, and shared a video of the training programme. During the 14-day stay at the ISS, the Ax-4 crew is expected to interact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, school students, and space industry leaders, among others. Earlier this week, the crew addressed a press conference to give an update on the training ahead of the launch. "We are good for the launch, we have completed all the training and the team has bonded well," Mr. Whitson said on Tuesday (June 3, 2025). Mr. Shukla described the year-long training for the spaceflight as "nothing short of transformative". "It has been an amazing journey so far, but the best is yet to come. As I go into space, I carry not just instruments and equipment, I carry hopes and dreams of a billion hearts," Mr. Shukla said. Mr. Shukla is set to conduct exclusive food and nutrition-related experiments developed under a collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), with support from NASA. The experiments aim to pioneer space nutrition and self-sustaining life support systems vital for future long-duration space travel. ISRO has lined up a set of seven experiments for Mr. Shukla, who will also participate in five joint studies planned by NASA for its human research program. It has drawn up plans to focus on India-centric food for carrying out experiments on the ISS, including sprouting methi (Fenugreek) and moong (green gram) in microgravity conditions. Mr. Shukla will also expose the seeds to the macrobiotic conditions and bring them back to earth, where they will be cultivated into plants not just once but over generations. Mr. Shukla's experience on the Axiom Mission 4 would be very well utilised on the Gaganyaan mission, which is planned for 2027. ISRO is spending ₹550 crore on the Axiom-4 mission.
