Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones, The Day Of The Jackal author Frederick Forsyth and Scottish crime writer Val McDermid are among the creatives who will feature in a new series of the BBC's In My Own Words. The series takes a closer look into some of the UK's leading creative minds including musicians, comedians, artists and authors, as they recount stories from their careers and lives.
Made up of single films, the BBC Arts episodes include personal testimonies and archived footage to explore their passions and the influencing factors that shaped their lives. Sir Tom, best known for hits like It's Not Unusual and Delilah, will revisit places that shaped his life, including the first house he ever owned.

He said: "Taking the time to look back at some of the extraordinary things that have happened in my life for In My Own Words has been really enjoyable and thought-provoking.

"Some of the archive I'd not seen before and watching snippets of those past times, places, styles and struggles brought home how lucky I am.
"Being able to spend the day in the first house I ever owned brought back so many memories... I hope everyone enjoys watching it as much as I did making it."
British thriller writer and journalist Forsyth, who wrote The Odessa File and The Dogs Of War, also joins the line-up – recounting his career from being the youngest RAF pilot to a foreign correspondent, BBC reporter and MI6 informant.

He said: "Having spent my career telling other people's stories, I now find myself in the unusual position of subject rather than storyteller.
"It has reminded me of the incredible luck I have had, the fork in the road moments, and the deep gratitude I feel for having been part of it."

McDermid, who is best known for her novels that follow the psychological profiler Dr Tony Hill, will also be seen opening up about the real-life inspirations behind her novels.
She said: "I'm so accustomed to living my life forwards - the next book, the next festival, the next gig, the next holiday - so this opportunity to look back was a welcome change.
"It recalled people and places with an unexpected vividness that I hope communicates itself to the viewers."

The series will also feature artists Cornelia Parker, known for her contemporary installations, and Yinka Shonibare who is known for exploring the likes of cultural identity through his art.
Shonibare said: "I found seeing the images of my past life amusing, surprising and emotional. The past is never quite as one imagines it to be."

Mark Bell, commissioning editor for BBC Arts, said: "In My Own Words shows us the myriad paths that the creative life can follow – from a farming childhood to conceptual art, cold war journalism to blockbuster thriller writing, the Welsh Valleys to superstardom – and the remarkable combination of talent and tenacity that goes into making art.

Steamship marks 125 years sailing on scenic Scottish loch

Departing with a long blast from the ship's steam whistle, the excited cheers of young voices marked the start of a weekend-long Steamboat Festival at Trossachs Pier. The festival is the centrepiece of a special anniversary year for the Steamship Sir Walter Scott, which was crowned Flagship of the Year 2025 by National Historic Ships UK in April. READ MORE: Historic steamship gears up for 125th anniversary celebration Historic ship begins 125th season on scenic Scottish loch SS Sir Walter Scott returns to Loch Katrine An actor portraying Sir Walter Scott joined the celebrations, honouring the poet whose 1810 masterpiece 'The Lady of the Lake' made him and Loch Katrine, where the poem is set, famous. Built in 1899 at Denny's Shipyard in Dumbarton on the Clyde, Steamship Sir Walter Scott was commissioned to replace the ageing and smaller Rob Roy steamer and help satisfy the huge demand for sailings from the large numbers of visitors flocking to the Trossachs. Tributes were also paid to Captain John MacKinnon, who steered the maiden voyage in 1900. A larger-than-life figure, Captain MacKinnon and his family played a defining role in the first half of the Steamer's life. He remained at the helm until his death, when his son Donald took over as captain. During both World Wars, John and Donald's daughters also cared for the ship. Highlights of this weekend's Steamboat Festival at Trossachs Pier include pirate-themed cruises aboard the Rob Roy Smuggler, complete with storytelling, face painting, and a treasure hunt, alongside a flotilla of classic and model steamboats sailing on the loch. There will also be live music, traditional games, appearances from costumed performers, local food and drink tastings, craft stalls, and fascinating heritage exhibitions. In a tribute to the vessel's enduring legacy, 125 local schoolchildren from local schools joined the cruise, recreating the historic maiden journey. (Image: Paul Saunders) James Fraser, CEO and Lead Trustee of Steamship Sir Walter Scott said: "To see 125 schoolchildren aboard this morning's voyage, representing the future, on a vessel that has been sailing since their great-great-grandparents' time, was truly emotional. "This Steamer is more than a boat: she symbolises the Trossachs' unrivalled cultural heritage in Scotland. She was saved for the nation by incredible public support, and today she sails on, restored, celebrated, and loved. "As we mark 125 years, we do so with gratitude and pride. We invite everyone to join us at Loch Katrine this weekend to celebrate a remarkable past and a bright future for this Scottish treasure." The Steamboat Festival runs across the weekend, with Steamship Sir Walter Scott sailing three times a day in her anniversary year until October 26th.

'I haven't got that worried about it the last six weeks or so – I haven't even been to see anyone, just a pharmacist. 'But today I've taken myself to eye casualty and I'm so emotional about it because it hurts and Matt is working away and my whole family – apart from me – are on holiday t.'* She added: 'But I've pulled myself together and come to the hospital. 'Everything is swollen & my eyes have puss [sic] coming out of them!' Shona said her day started trying not to cry but it quickly spiralled. 'I started the day trying not to cry and ended up spending my day crying,' she admitted. 'I've left eye casualty now – I wasn't actually there for long – but I cried again because she said I can't use anything on my face. 'And I cried again because I've got my acne under control with the skincare I use and I just imagined that all going back to where it was before.' The telly favourite said she left the hospital with no prescription, but a firm warning to ditch her current eye drops. MAFS' Shona hits back at trolls who branded her promise ring 'pointless' after reunion 'proposal' 'They said not to take the antihistamine drops the pharmacist gave me, to continue taking the Chlorphenamine tablets (drowsy antihistamine tablets) and just put a cold compress on till the swelling goes down.' Doctors also advised her to avoid putting anything on her face and figure out what she might be allergic to. The reality star found fame on Married at First Sight UK in 2023 but left the show early because of her unhealthy relationship with Brad Skelly. She met her boyfriend Matt Pilmoor soon after through the show. The Sun told how Shona had found love with Matt, despite tying the knot to different people on the series. Matt married Adrienne Naylor, but the pair struggled to hit it off straight away. A REAL WEDDING Matt told OK! Magazine: 'We definitely want to get married. Getting married abroad would be lovely but, logistically, we would do it in the UK for family coming and stuff like that.' Shona continued: 'Yeah, we've spoken about getting married. Matt has said he will wear a kilt because my family are Scottish. We would get married here in the UK and have an amazing honeymoon, maybe in Bali. We've spoken about engagement rings, we just need the money first.'
