A rare tropical disease which can spread just by breathing it in has left at least 31 people dead in Queensland.
Some 221 cases of melioidosis have been reported so far this year, which is up by 163 compared to this time last year.
The family of Evan Brown who was killed after contracting the disease last year has urged residents to be vigilant.
He was taken to hospital with multiple organ failure and septicaemia just days after his 40th birthday.
His wife Sarah said: 'Knowing what we went through as a family and having so many other people who were impacted by our news, it makes me scared for the general populous because it's clearly in our area, the flooding is causing it to be present.'
The soil borne disease has spread due to heavy rain and flooding bringing the bacteria to the surface, with tropical cyclone Alfred exacerbating the spread.
It then enters the body through cuts, drinking contaminated water of even just breathing it in after heavy rain.
Queensland Health said: 'Cases are most commonly reported in residents of the Torres and Cape, North West, Cairns and Hinterland and Townsville regions.'
Cases increased by 400% in Cairns and 600% in Townsville this year.
Localized pain or swelling
Fever
Ulceration
Abscess
Cough
Chest pain
Headache
Respiratory distress
Abdominal discomfort
Joint pain
Disorientation
Central nervous system/brain infection
Seizures
Melioidosis first presents itself as a common infection, with experts describing the bacteria as a 'great imitator'.
Queensland Government said: 'Melioidosis is treated with strong antibiotics for at least three months.
'People who are very sick will usually need to go to hospital and might need treatment in intensive care.
'It can be fatal if not treated with the right antibiotics.'
People living in high-risk areas have bene encouraged to wear correct footwear when outside.
It is rare healthy adults and children catch and become unwell from the disease.
But people with long term illnesses including cancer, diabetes, lung and kidney diseases are at risk.
Heavy alcohol drinkers are also more susceptible to catching the bacteria.
Pets can also contract the disease from other animals.

Elgin mum-of-four's cancer shock after going private to end 18-month NHS wait
An Elgin mum-of-four only learned she had cancer after paying around £15,000 to go private when faced with an 18-month wait on the NHS. Sarah Beaton first visited her GP in June 2024 after suffering from heavy periods. Following multiple visits to her surgery, she was referred for a scan which she received in January this year. The results showed there were anomalies. It was initially thought to be a fibroid, which is a benign non-cancerous growth. But the 43-year-old, who lives just outside of Elgin, was told she would need referred to the gynaecology department at NHS Grampian. Speaking to the P&J, she said: 'I was told there would be an 18-month waiting list for a consultation with a gynaecologist. 'I wasn't very happy because obviously I've been suffering with it for quite a while, and they said to just carry on with the same tablets until I could get a consultation.' The GP told her they would probably recommend a hysteroscopy, a test to look inside a woman's womb, to remove the fibroid which should solve the problem. Frightened by the length of wait, Sarah and her husband Bill Beaton, who run a farming contractor company, decided they would pay for private treatment. Within a week, she had a scan at Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen and a hysteroscopy was scheduled for the following month. But the results proved to be a shock as what was removed wasn't in fact a fibroid, but a mass of cells, which turned out to be endometrial cancer. The mum-of-four last month received a total hysterectomy to remove her womb at the private hospital. Now recovering from the operation at home, she is waiting to find out if further treatment is required. Reflecting on her experience, Sarah told the P&J: 'Had we not gone private, I'd be sitting here still waiting. 'You'll be going about your day and thinking 'I'm lucky' but if I hadn't done that, where would I be in 18 months time? 'What sort of stage would it be? Would it be recoverable? 'We're in a position where we can find that money to do that but there are hundreds who are not like me and are not in that position who at the end will have to incur a lot more treatment than if they were seen sooner.' She added: 'There was no inclination it was anything else until we got that result. It was quite a shock.' Highlands and Island Tory MSP Douglas Ross raised Sarah's 'intolerable' wait at First Minister's Questions on Thursday. John Swinney described the situation as 'unacceptable' and insisted the SNP government is investing more in early intervention to avoid these long waits. Mr Ross said: 'It doesn't bear thinking what the outlook for Sarah may have been had she sat on an NHS waiting list for 18 months before being seen by a specialist and the cancer being uncovered.' The latest NHS Grampian waiting times figures for June show that where gynaecology patients are referred with a suspicion of cancer, 90% are seen within nine weeks. Urgent cases are seen in around 25 weeks, while cases assessed as routine are a 64-week wait. An NHS Grampian spokesman said: 'Behind waiting time figures are real people, with real concerns about their health, and an extremely hard-working clinical team doing their utmost to care for them. 'We are aware patients are often waiting longer for services than they or we would like and we'd apologise to anyone affected by this. 'As a health board we cannot comment on individual patient cases. When a patient, or their representative, makes direct contact with us we are more than willing to discuss their case with them – including their diagnosis, treatment and any further care they received.'

Urgent outbreak alert as life-threatening disease surges in one Aussie state as wet weather fuels spike in cases
Two more cases of malaria have been recorded in Queensland with residents warned the potentially deadly disease can lead to seizures and long-term cognitive issues. Queensland Health are investigating two more cases of locally acquired malaria, bringing the number of infections in the state this year to 71. The second locally acquired infection was recently found in the Torres Strait Islands local government area. The vast majority of cases (97 per cent) this year have come from overseas, mainly Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. But it's a worrying trend given just four cases were recorded in the same period in 2021. Twenty were recorded in 2022, 50 in 2023 and 69 in 2024. Recent wild weather in Far North Queensland has played a role in the spike in cases. Autumn was one of the wettest in Queensland's history, beating 100-year records with floodwaters a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Malaria is preventable and curable and can't be passed from person to person and is spread through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Mater Health infectious diseases director Paul Griffin told ABC the outbreak would be contained to the far north of Australia. 'We don't have mosquitoes capable of passing malaria on all throughout the country, but certainly in the more tropical parts of our country, the Northern Territory and northern parts of Queensland,' he said. 'That's why in those areas we need to give people that advice to make sure we reduce the chance of local transmission.' The last cases acquired on mainland Australia were during an outbreak in north Queensland in 2002. 'Malaria used to be something that we had transmitted within Australia, but due to a host of different interventions locally, acquired malaria has not been something that we have really dealt with for some 40-odd years,' Mr Griffin said. Mr Griffin did however warn that those at risk of catching the disease needed to take the threat seriously. 'With more significant types of malaria, the severe consequences can be involvement of the brain, so cerebral malaria and even death,' he said. 'It is something that we do need to take seriously and make sure we take steps to limit how much it is able to be passed on in our country.' The most common early symptoms of malaria are fever, headache and chills and they usually start within 10 to 15 days of getting bitten by an infected mosquito.

While she's been making big money on the platform, having claimed to have taken home £700,000 in 2022, Sarah has found herself the target of cruel trolling. Taking to Instagram to confront her latest bully, she sarcastically responded to their nasty comment. The follower had written: "Yeah why not just make sure your kids get bullied because of your content just so you can get a little validation from people you don't know, good idea." But Sarah - who shares son Stanley, nine, with her husband Jonathan Smith - made sure to clap back with humour, pretending to read a positive one in a get-ready-with-me video. With the aforementioned jibe shown on the screen, she instead read: "Thanks for your inspiring content. Your son is really lucky to have a mom like you that loves him so much. Please show us some more of your outfits." Sarah then enthused: "Of course I will! What a kind, kind comment. Thank you. I will happily show you another outfit," before proceding to talk her fans through what she had been wearing. At the end, she concluded: "Thanks again for that really, really lovely, positive comment." The actress quit the Channel 4 soap for a career on OnlyFans three years ago. Hollyoaks said it doesn't allow cast members to be active on certain 18+ websites because of the show's responsibility to its young audience. Axed Hollyoaks star reveals she's now a pole dancing teacher as she shows off her moves in thong and high heels Speaking about posting on OnlyFans before, Sarah said it was "about taking back control, about empowerment and confidence and having full power over my choices". More recently, Sarah revealed her new job after quitting the soap, and will be teaching her first ever pole class. Sharing images of herself pole dancing, the actress penned: 'I'm excited and terrified in equal measure… because very soon, I'll be stepping into a whole new challenge- teaching my first beginners' pole class! 'Pole has been a huge part of my life for over two years now. I first found it just after lockdown, a little before turning 41, when I was looking for something fun, but challenging. 'From the very first spin, I was hooked. What started as a way to move and push myself has become so much more- strength, confidence, and a whole new community of incredible, supportive people who lift each other up (literally!).' 7 She shares son Stanley, nine, with her husband Jonathan Smith Credit: Instagram 7 Sarah has been making six figures on OnlyFans Credit: Instagram 7 She has been posting images of herself pole dancing recently Credit: instagram Sarah continued: 'I've recently started 1:1 training with a new pole coach, and I can already feel myself improving in ways I never expected. Every move mastered feels like a little victory, and there's always a new challenge to take on. 'Now, I'm about to take the next step, sharing everything I've learned with others. My beginner's classes will be for absolute newbies or anyone wanting to go back to basics! 'I'll be teaching at the same studio where my journey began too which is exciting @PoleGymholmeschapel, and I can't wait to help others discover just how empowering pole can be.' Sarah added: "I left feeling tired but inspired to sign up for more workshops this year with this wonderful community of supportive women.
