Andy Robertson makes statement on Liverpool future as Reds close in on Kerkez
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has admitted he is in discussions with the club over his future but was coy over what the outcome of those may be as he enters his final year
Andy Robertson has admitted his Liverpool future is far from certain as he enters the final year of his contract. The long-time Anfield servant has already been in discussions with the club over a new deal.
Robertson's position has come under scrutiny over the past 12 months, despite being Arne Slot's first choice on the left side of defence. The Scotland international, 31, has previously sent a defiant message about fighting for his place, should Liverpool sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Kostas Tsimikas could be on his way out of the club to make room for the Cherries star, amid interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest. But Robertson's future seems more complicated, and departing for free next summer may not yet be off the table.
The veteran has noted that his conversations with the club have been positive. The ex-Hull City defender couched that by suggesting that, beyond his focus being on pre-season, nothing is certain.
Speaking to Sky Sports News at his AR26 Charity day, Robertson said: 'We have discussed [my future], of course we have. We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure.
'All I know is I fly off on holiday and it's well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That's all my focus is.
'I can't look too far ahead, I never have done that so I'm not going to start doing that now. I know the position I'm in, I know I've only got a year left.
"A lot's getting spoken about it, a lot's getting said, but my pure focus is focussing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids. Then I'll try and come back in the best shape possible for pre-season, and then we'll see what the future holds when those decisions come.'
Robertson believes it is a positive that Liverpool are targeting young talents to improve the squad however. The Reds have already signed Jeremie Frimpong and are nearing a move for Florian Wirtz in addition to Kerkez.
'I think at any big club I think you always have to keep moving, the club always moves forwards," he added. "I think you've seen that us and also other big clubs, like Man City and things, have been very active in the window early doors.
"I know we've already got Frimpong in the door so far, but it looks as if maybe one or two is going to be close from what we can see on Sky Sports News probably! But yeah, look, just now we're at the top – We obviously won the league – and it's important that the club try to keep improving and try to keep finding ways to do that.
'They've obviously identified certain positions that they want to get new blood in, younger. The players that we're linked with are all younger players and they're all exciting players as well.
"So when you play for a big club like Liverpool, you expect challenges, you expect to have competition. I've always faced that and so has everyone in their own positions.
"So we expect nothing less. We want the club to be ambitious, they're doing that. And wherever we fit into that, if you're happy with you're role, you stay and you do it, and if you're not, then I'm sure there will be some people out the door as well.
"But that's the nature of football, it's one of the biggest clubs in the world and we have to keep moving."

Leaked FSG text speaks volumes about Liverpool's Florian Wirtz transfer saga
As Liverpool look set to eclipse their club record transfer fee to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, many fans may remember the leaked text FSG sent to Jurgen Klopp With Liverpool on the verge of shattering their record transfer fee to sign Florian Wirtz, supporters may remember a leaked text from Fenway Sports Group. The Reds recently submitted a bid of £100milllion plus £14m of add-ons to Bayer Leverkusen, and while negotiations are still ongoing, they remain confident of wrapping up a deal. The Merseysiders are doing all they can to bring in the 22-year-old Germany international. And his arrival would dwarf their previous transfer record, which saw them spend £75m on Virgil van Dijk in the 2018 January transfer window. Wirtz is widely admired around Europe and was heavily linked with Manchester City and Bayern Munich. His likely arrival is a statement of intent from owners FSG, who were often reluctant to spent £100m in a single transfer window, let alone on one player. Not long ago, the club's fanbase were repeatedly accusing FSG of being too scared to break the bank to sign top-class players. The seemingly imminent arrival of Wirtz is a clear sign that the purse strings are no longer as tight. It is a huge boost to Liverpool fans who were often frustrated by the likes of fierce rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea comfortably out-spending them. In his early years at the club, former manager Jurgen Klopp defended the ownership in press conferences and interviews. But behind the scenes, the German was making it clear that extra investment in the squad was vital if they wanted to lift the big trophies. When Klopp arrived at Liverpool, the Reds were in 10th place and had an ageing squad. Unhappy with the players at his disposal, Klopp received an apologetic text from the FSG bosses. In 2021, Klopp revealed: "At the beginning I received a message from the US saying, 'Sorry for the squad we've given you.' But all was good I replied, it just needs time.' Two years after revealing that text, Klopp watched his Liverpool side be convincingly beaten 5-2 at home by Real Madrid. It was the kind of chastening defeat which prompts action in the next transfer window. The previous month, Klopp publicly warned that Liverpool will need to be more aggressive in the transfer window or they will fall behind their Premier League and European rivals. He said: "I believe in coaching, I believe in developing, I believe in team-building and using those things 100%. "But meanwhile in the world out there the managers are really good. There are so many good managers out there it's crazy. So they believe in that as well, and if they start really properly spending and do those things as well, then you cannot not spend or you will have a little bit of a problem." In Klopp's final summer transfer window they fully took on Klopp's advice, as they rebuilt their midfield by signing Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo for a combined £155m. After Klopp walked away, many were surprised that Arne Slot was only able to sign Federico Chiesa in his first two transfer windows. But after winning the Premier League, FSG have shown the kind of spending intent usually seen by City, United and Chelsea. The way in which they have quickly moved for Wirtz highlights FSG's proactiveness, and that they are no longer afraid to break the bank to sign a potential game-changer. Full-back Jeremie Frimpong has already arrived this summer for £29.5m, while £45m Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez looks likely to arrive too, so Liverpool are clearly looking to build on their title triumph from Slot's first season. And it's a stark contract from the text message they left for Klopp all those years ago.

Former England star Trevor Sinclair declared bankrupt after ‘burying head in sand' over £36k tax bill
CASH WOES Former England star Trevor Sinclair declared bankrupt after 'burying head in sand' over £36k tax bill FORMER England star Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt after "burying his head in the sand" over a £36,000 tax debt. The footballer made a fortune during his career with QPR, West Ham and Man City before becoming a pundit after he retired. 5 Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 5 He won 12 caps for England before retiring in 2008 But he failed to pay taxes and penalties totalling £36,424 in relation to his TV and radio career between 2021 and 2022. As a result, Sinclair was told to come up with the cash or find an alternative way to pay. The ex-Premier League star failed to turn up to court though and has now been made bankrupt in his absence. Judge Caroline Wilkinson said HMRC had received no contact from the former star and concluded that he is "unable to pay his debts as they fall due." The case previously reached Central London County Court in April when the judge heard that Sinclair ended up owing a sizeable chunk of cash to the taxman after his accountant died. His bill included more than £13,000 for work as a pundit, plus outstanding National Insurance and penalty payments. HMRC barrister Shabab Rizvi saying: "The debtor is a former Premier League footballer and should have the means to satisfy the debt, but there's been no contact with HMRC at all." However, the case was adjourned to give him more time to pay after his lawyer Robert Lee told the court Sinclair was working in the media and "currently in receipt of a job offer in Saudi Arabia." He said the debt arose from Sinclair "being considered self-employed when he ought not to have been." Judge Wilkinson granted the adjournment on the basis Sinclair face up to his impending bankruptcy. He said: "Mr Sinclair has to wake up to the fact that there's no more head in the sand because this is serious". The case returned to court yesterday, where the judge was told Sinclair had failed to materialise. Granting the bankruptcy order, Judge Wilkinson said the case had been paused for Sinclair to consider pursuing an alternative to bankruptcy such as an "individual voluntary arrangement". She continued: "Mr Sinclair is not in attendance today and no proposals have been put forward for paying his debt. "In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order." Sinclair received 12 caps for England during his career - including four during the 2002 World Cup. His famous bicycle kick goal for QPR against Barnsley won him Match of the Day goal of the season in 1997. Sinclair hung up his boots in 2008 but he returned to screens as a pundit for TV and radio. However, this came to an end in 2022 when he questioned why "black and brown people" were mourning the Queen. 5 Sinclair failed to pay tax through his punditry work between 2021 and 2022 Credit: Getty 5 The former West Ham star failed to attend a court hearing Credit: Getty

Some of Liverpool's most exciting signings since 1992
So, with Liverpool in final negotiations over a club record £114m deal for Germany star Florian Wirtz, the excitement levels among supporters is reaching fever got us thinking... which signing during the Premier League era has got Reds fans most excited? We're not pretending this is a definitive list - you will have your own views - but we've come up with eight names, including Wirtz as we're assuming this deal gets over the line, that had the fanbase buzzing when Liverpool moved for isn't based on what they actually went on to achieve at Anfield, just the feeling when they arrived. And it's just a bit of have a look through the list - which is in chronological order (with some honourable mentions at the end) - then you've got the chance to order them yourself as well as get in touch with your own Collymore broke the British transfer record when Liverpool signed him for £8.5m in 1995. He scored 35 goals across two seasons at Anfield, forming a potent strike partnership with Robbie Fowler. In his first season, he scored five goals in Liverpool's FA Cup run, which ultimately ended in defeat by Manchester United in the on joining Liverpool: "I didn't want to look back at my career and say I hadn't achieved as much as I might have done. That's one of the reasons I came here. I want to win things and I do believe I can do that sooner rather than later with Liverpool."Harry Kewell turned down a move to arch rivals Manchester United and signed for Liverpool from Leeds United in 2003. Injuries hindered the Australian from reaching his full potential on Merseyside, but the winger still managed to win a Champions League and FA Cup in his five seasons at Anfield. He scored 16 goals in 139 appearances for the boss Gerrard Houlier on signing Kewell: "We had spoken about bringing in players who would have the fans on the edge of their seats and I can't think of a better description for the qualities that Harry will bring to Anfield."Robbie Fowler's romantic return to Liverpool in 2006 saw him score 12 goals across a second coming that lasted one and a half seasons. Reds fans inside Anfield made it abundantly clear about how excited they were for Fowler's return, displaying a sign that read "Fowler. God. 11. Welcome back to heaven" at his first game back against Birmingham who had left Anfield for Leeds in 2001, said on his return: "Leaving was probably one of my biggest regrets I have had in football. I'm chuffed to bits. I mean, I can't really believe it's happened again, so I'm ecstatic to be honest."Fernando Torres signed from Atletico Madrid for a then club record £20m in 2007. 'El Nino' won the club's player of the year in his debut campaign, and scored an impressive 81 goals in 142 outings for the Reds before breaking the British transfer record with a £50m move to rivals Chelsea in Garcia, who coached Fernando Torres at junior level: "He'll probably become world famous. Directness, pace, power, excellent in the air and the mindset of a born winner make Fernando an extraordinary player." Joe Cole joined on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2010 making him Roy Hodgson's first signing at the club. There was lots of buzz after Liverpool landed the 28-year-old England star ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham, but his Premier League debut lasted just 45 minutes before he was sent off for a poor challenge against the Gunners, and it didn't get much better from there. Cole was sent out on loan and then eventually sold in January 2013, after making just 26 appearances and scoring three goals for the Gerrard on Cole: "Messi can do some amazing things - but anything he can do, Joe can do as well, if not better."Virgil van Dijk joined in January 2018 from Southampton and remains Liverpool's most expensive transfer at £75m. He reached back-to-back Champions League finals in his first one and a half seasons, winning it at the second time of asking. The Dutch colossus has since added two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Club World Cup to his cabinet and took the captain's armband in Moss, the talent scout who brought Van Dijk to Celtic, said : "I used to say to Premier League clubs: 'Van Dijk is a man playing in a playground against kids, he stands out so much. He's 6ft 4in, can ping it from one end of the field to the other, can head it, scores goals, is quick … he's got everything.' And they'd still go and buy someone else. I'd despair."Thiago Alcantara left Bayern Munich for a £20m move to Liverpool in 2020 for what ended up being a patchy, injury-ridden spell. In four years on Merseyside, the Barcelona academy graduate made 98 appearances, scored three goals and won one FA Bayern manager Hansi Flick said: "Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us. It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person."As for likely £114m recruit Wirtz, he has come back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in 2022 to become a key part of Leverkusen's domestic double under former Red Xabi Alonso in 2023-24. With 23 goal contributions that campaign, he was named the Bundesliga's player of the said: "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."Honourable mentions:Now as we said, this is by no means a scientific list and there were other names who could have made the eight - including (but not limited to) Karl-Heinz-Riedle, Markus Babbel, Luis Suarez, Naby Keita, Alisson, Darwin Nunez... and yes, even El-Hadji-Diouf, who arrived with huge hype after the 2002 World now it's over to the eight names we narrowed it down to hereAnd as importantly, get in touch with your thoughts on those named - and tell us who else should have been on the list - here
