FBI upgrades New Zealand office with permanent special agent
A legal attache, or special agent, has been installed at the FBI's office at the US Embassy in Wellington, Security Minister Judith Collins and Police Minister Mark Mitchell said in a statement. FBI Director Kash Patel (pic) officially opened the upgraded office on Thursday.
"The FBI's upgrade of its Wellington office demonstrates the strength of the Five Eyes partnership and enhances the safety and security of New Zealanders,' the ministers said. "Director Patel's visit was an excellent opportunity to share our common concerns while reinforcing the importance of New Zealand and the US working together to protect our citizens.'
Patel is the most senior member of the US administration to visit New Zealand since the start of President Donald Trump's second term.
"The FBI has had a strong relationship and collaborated closely with our counterparts in New Zealand for years,' Patel said in a separate statement. "Expanding the Wellington office demonstrates the strength and evolution of our partnership as we continue to work together to address our shared security objectives in the region.' - Bloomberg

As the nation's leader, Paetongtarn's phone conversation with Cambodia's former leader Hun Sen was made in good faith with a sincere intention to promote peace between the two countries, Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary-general to the prime minister, told reporters. She submitted her defense statement on Monday, meeting the deadline set by the Constitutional Court, he said. "At this moment, we believe our intentions were right and will be fairly considered,' Prommin said. In the controversial June phone call with Hun Sen, which was subsequently leaked, Paetongtarn blamed the border standoff between the two neighbors on the Thai army. The remarks, which she apologized for later, sparked protests in Thailand and calls for her to resign. The court suspended Paetongtarn from her prime ministerial duties on July 1 after receiving a complaint from a group of senators accusing her of violating ethical standards. She could be disqualified and removed from office permanently if the court finds her guilty. A further escalation in the border dispute after Paetongtarn's suspension erupted into the biggest armed conflict between the two countries in decades. The fighting, which killed more than 40 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians on both sides, stopped following a ceasefire agreement, mediated by Malaysia as the chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) and a push by US President Donald Trump. Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of billionaire and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, came to power in August last year after her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, was ousted in a similar ethics-related case over the appointment of a cabinet minister. She has remained in the cabinet as the Culture Minister while one of her deputies, Phumtham Wechayachai, stepped in as the acting prime minister. Philippines' House challenges court ruling invalidating VP Sara Duterte's impeachment
MANILA (Bloomberg): The Philippines' House of Representatives on Monday asked the Supreme Court to reverse its decision nullifying the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte over an apparent threat to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The House filed an appeal before the high court, which unanimously decided last month that the complaint against Duterte defied the constitutional rule that only one impeachment proceeding may be initiated against the same official within one year. "Impeachment is primarily a political process, as emphasized by the Constitution's entrusting it to Congress and not to the Judiciary,' lawyers for the House said in the motion for reconsideration. "Thus, any ruling of this Honorable Court on impeachment must reflect impeachment's true nature. It must give due deference to the branch of government to whom impeachment is entrusted,' they said. The vice president, daughter of ex-leader Rodrigo Duterte, was impeached in February by the House and has denied accusations that include plotting to assassinate Marcos and misusing public funds. The bid to oust the vice president came as her public feud with Marcos deepened, following their triumphant election team-up in 2022. Rodrigo is currently detained at the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity over his deadly drug war. The House, which had archived three impeachment complaints filed against Sara Duterte in December, said all complaints were treated in accordance with the Constitution. "It is rather the fourth impeachment complaint which barred all other impeachment from being initiated,' the House's motion read. The court decision was a relief for Duterte, who was awaiting trial in the country's Senate that could disqualify her from public office if convicted. The vice president is widely seen as a top contender for the 2028 election to succeed Marcos, who is limited to a single, six-year term.
