There is a growing buzz around Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas. The team brought him in with big hopes, but now, just a few months later, questions are being raised about whether he is truly happy in Denver.
A recent report by a well-known NHL insider has sparked new concerns.
NHL insider suggests Martin Necas may not be fully happy with Avalanche
On Tuesday, June 4, 2025, veteran NHL insider Nick Kypreos shared his Trade Board on Sportsnet. In that post, he listed Martin Necas as a player to watch during the upcoming offseason. Kypreos notes a "sense" that Necas would not be completely satisfied with his updated gang in Colorado.
Martin Necas was sent to the Avalanche in January 2025 by the Carolina Hurricanes.
This activity came after an unanticipated and sudden trade that expelled Colorado star forward Mikko Rantanen. At the time, Avs General Manager Chris MacFarland made it clear that Necas was the key return in the deal.
Before that trade, Carolina had also been in talks with the Vancouver Canucks about sending Necas there instead. Once the Avalanche learned this, they quickly stepped in and made their move to land the 27-year-old forward.

Contract situation adds to uncertainty about Martin Necas future in Denver
Since joining Colorado, Martin Necas has performed well on the ice. He scored 11 goals and recorded 17 assists in just 30 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he added one goal and four assists across seven games. He was also given a bigger role right away, skating on lines with superstar Nathan MacKinnon.
Still, despite his strong play, questions are now growing about how long Necas wants to stay. Kypreos noted that last summer, while still with Carolina, Necas only signed a two-year deal instead of a long-term contract.
This shorter deal puts him on track to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
Kypreos wrote, 'There was a sense Necas wasn't overly thrilled with his experience in Colorado and that he wanted to explore other options.' He also raised the concern about how much patience the Avalanche will have if contract talks with Necas move slowly in July.
At the moment, Martin Necas is earning $6.5 million per season. If he asks for a much higher number next year, it could put pressure on Colorado's salary cap. That is part of what led the Avalanche to trade Rantanen in the first place.
As of now, no official word has come from Martin Necas or the team. But with July 1 approaching, the date when contract talks can begin all eyes will be on what comes next.

Former Panthers star urges Team Canada to add him with Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid in 4 Nations

Brandon Montour openly pitches to join Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid after Team Canada snub (The Canadian Press) After celebrating the pinnacle of his NHL career by hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024, Brandon Montour has set his sights on another dream. This time, the prize isn't a league trophy but the honor of wearing the Maple Leaf on the world's biggest stage. Left out of the 4 Nations roster earlier this year, Montour is determined to fight his way into Team Canada's lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano. Brandon Montour determined to earn spot alongside Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid on Team Canada The NHL season hasn't even begun, yet anticipation is already building around Olympic hockey. For Canadian players, the Games carry unmatched prestige. With a roster so stacked in every position, only the absolute elite secure their names on the team sheet. That reality fuels Montour's hunger. Canada has already announced its first six names: Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Sam Reinhart, and Brayden Point. It's a lineup that leaves little margin for others to break in, but Montour knows his window of opportunity lies in proving his worth on the ice. 'I felt like I had the opportunity of making the 4 Nations team; unfortunately, it was not to be,' Montour told 'At the same time, I think, for any hockey fan, it's cool to kind of see the high end, you know, elite of the elite playing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Dog Does This, Here's What It Means Undo It gives you the kind of thirst to feel like you could be a part of that.' That hunger is more than talk. Despite Seattle's struggles last season, Montour showcased his consistency at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, tallying nine points. His performance didn't go unnoticed, earning him a call-up to Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp in Calgary this August. Brandon Montour's path to Milano 2026 At 31, Montour knows that opportunities to represent Canada at the Olympics don't come often. The blueline competition will be fierce, but he has shown both resilience and growth in recent years. 'It was nice to get that,' Montour admitted about the camp invite. 'I think I played well at the Worlds and, I mean, I think at this point people know what I bring. But to be recognized, it's very cool.' From the heartbreak of being left out to the thrill of a new chance, Montour's Olympic chase is a story of grit. If his form continues, the Panthers' Cup champion may yet skate alongside Crosby and McDavid under Canada's banner in Milano. Mark Scheifele calls Jonathan Toews' Jets homecoming 'the perfect storm' as veteran sparks Winnipeg's big hopes

Jonathan Toews' homecoming excites Mark Scheifele (Getty Images) The Winnipeg Jets made one of the NHL 's most talked-about offseason moves when they brought hometown legend Jonathan Toews back to Manitoba. For fans, it's a storybook reunion. For Mark Scheifele, the Jets' star center, it's what he calls a 'perfect storm'—the timing of Toews' decision to return after two years away from hockey aligned perfectly with Winnipeg's need to strengthen its depth down the middle. Mark Scheifele hails Jonathan Toews' Winnipeg Jets comeback Jonathan Toews signed a one-year, $2 million deal, with as much as $5 million in performance bonuses at stake. At 37 and after a long battle with chronic inflammatory response syndrome and long COVID symptoms, the question isn't whether he's still the same player—he's not—but how much of his experience and leadership can tilt Winnipeg's fortunes in a tightly contested Western Conference. Scheifele, for one, is thrilled to have him back. 'I thought it kind of was the perfect storm almost,' Scheifele told Derek Van Diest. 'Coming back to Winnipeg, coming back from not playing for a couple of years, I thought it all made so much sense. I was obviously hoping that we were the front-runner and we're very excited to have him.' The Jets enter the new campaign with captain Adam Lowry sidelined by hip surgery, creating a clear opportunity for Toews to seize a meaningful role. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo He'll likely compete with Vladislav Namestnikov for the No. 2 center spot, a challenge that gives him a chance to make an immediate impact despite his two-year absence. A legend's return brings experience and hope to Winnipeg Toews' last NHL season with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022–23 ended with 15 goals and 16 assists across 53 games. While those numbers may not mirror his prime, the resume speaks for itself: three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and a Selke Trophy, all across 15 unforgettable years in Chicago. What excites Scheifele most, however, is what Toews brings beyond the stat sheet. 'Obviously he's a legend, not just in the NHL but Winnipeg especially,' Scheifele said. 'He's obviously really excited to get back playing hockey and to be with our group. I'm very excited to have a guy with his stature and his experience and all the above. I'm really excited to play with him.' For Toews, this is more than just a comeback—it's a chance to lace up in front of family and friends where it all began. For Winnipeg, it's a gamble worth taking, one that could reshape the Jets' season if the veteran center finds even a glimpse of his old rhythm.
