France's top court strikes down pesticide clause in farming law
The court said that the measure failed to protect the environment and future generations. The rest of the law — known as the 'Duplomb law,' after the senator who proposed it — was allowed to stand.
The bill, passed in early July, aimed to loosen rules for farmers and fast-track projects like water storage. It was backed by the government and major farming unions, but met fierce opposition from scientists, health experts and green groups.
At the heart of the outrage was acetamiprid, a pesticide banned in France since 2018 for its role in harming bees and other pollinators. Farmers, especially sugar beet growers, had pushed for its return.
But the court ruled that the proposal wasn't strict enough, and ignored France's constitutional commitment to environmental protection.
The backlash was swift and widespread. A student-led petition against the law drew more than 2 million signatures — one of the biggest in French history. Opponents said that the bill was rushed through parliament with barely any debate, and warned that it put public health and biodiversity at risk.
The ruling is a blow to President Emmanuel Macron's government, which had defended the bill until the end.
Critics called the decision a win for democracy and the planet. Some lawmakers have already vowed to push for a full repeal in the coming months.
Acetamiprid is currently approved by the European Union until 2033, and authorized in other member countries.

'The German government remains deeply concerned about the ongoing suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip,' Merz said. 'With the planned offensive, the Israeli government bears even greater responsibility than before for providing for them.' The decision is a significant step for Berlin, which has been one of Israel's strongest supporters because of its historical responsibilities stemming from the Holocaust. It was taken amid growing international outrage over the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza during Israel's war against Hamas. In the past few weeks, Merz repeatedly called on Israel to alleviate the 'catastrophic' humanitarian crisis in Gaza and threatened that his government would consider potential further steps should the situation not improve. In his statement, Merz reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself, but questioned whether further attacks on Gaza can help it achieve its goals of defeating Hamas. Even so, the chancellor's decision to halt supplies is largely symbolic as little in the way of Germany military aid has been sent in recent weeks, and Israel has been getting spare parts for its tanks from the Americans. Through its naval division, Thyssenkrupp AG has served as a key supplier to the Israeli Navy, providing advanced diesel-electric submarines and support through maintenance and parts supply agreements. These vessels form a central component of Israel's military and operate from the Haifa naval base, however it's not clear if they'd be involved in any further attack on Gaza. In Germany, all military exports to conflict areas have to be approved by the federal security council, which meets secretly, and its decisions are not made public. In the case of Israel, military exports have been particularly sensitive. Merz's predecessor, Olaf Scholz, said that Germany would continue to export military equipment, despite growing domestic criticism. Merz's announcement follows a trip by his foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, to Israel and the Palestinian territories last week. Wadephul signaled for the first time that his government could speed up the process of recognizing a Palestinian state should Israel annex the West Bank. Upon his return to Berlin, however, Wadephul softened his tone and said that he had seen some improvements of the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Peace in Northern Ireland to inspire high-level summit on Western Balkans
It is hoped Northern Ireland's peace process will inspire lasting reconciliation in the Western Balkans during a high-level summit later this year. Foreign Secretary David Lammy will host 15 European ministers at Hillsborough Castle for talks as the region faces growing threats from instability, corruption and criminal gangs which also compromise UK security. The local legacy of peace-building will be drawn on to champion diplomacy and reconciliation among Western Balkans countries. The castle previously played host to vital moments in UK and Irish politics, including intense negotiations which salvaged peace talks from the brink of collapse, forging the way for the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Mr Lammy said Hillsborough Castle was a poignant reminder of the power of diplomacy to transform conflict and division into long-term peace and co-operation. 'By harnessing Northern Ireland's experience, we hope to support partners in the Western Balkans to overcome the challenges of the past through meaningful reconciliation and help build a safe and prosperous future,' he said. 'As part of the plan for change, this Government is committed to strengthening partnerships with Europe, ensuring strong foundations of economic stability, secure borders and national security.' Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn said the region was a legacy of hope. 'Northern Ireland's experience of securing peace through the Good Friday Agreement after decades of conflict has set a powerful example of reconciliation to the world,' he said. 'This provides a legacy of hope as well as practical experience which I believe will prove invaluable to our Western Balkans partners as they travel a similar path to peace and prosperity. 'As a long-standing forum for peace-building and politics, it is fitting that Hillsborough Castle has been chosen to host this significant international event.' Laura McCorry, head of Hillsborough Castle, added: 'For centuries, Hillsborough Castle has been a place where people come together to shape a shared future. 'The castle stands as a living testament to the power of dialogue and reconciliation in a place where peace has been hard won. 'We hope it will provide an inspiring setting for the meeting and look forward to hosting the ministers this autumn.' The summit will take place while the UK continues a role in security in Kosovo where it has maintained a presence through Nato's KFOR mission since 1999. Since the election last year, the UK has stepped up engagement with Western Balkans countries to deliver on the plan for change, including breaking people smuggling networks exploiting the region as a gateway to Europe. According to the Government, during 2024 alone, more than 55,000 people were trafficked to other countries along routes through the Western Balkans. A joint agreement on organised immigration crime was signed with Serbia during Mr Lammy's visit to the region in April, when he also visited Kosovo. The Foreign Secretary also visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in May amid political instability in the country, part of the UK's increased activity and engagement in the Western Balkans.
