Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) joined local police in investigating an attempt to sabotage train operations near Tiruvalangadu station in Tiruvallur district. The incident occurred early on Friday on the Arakkonam–Chennai section.
Unknown people removed track fastenings, aiming to disrupt railway movement. An accident was prevented after the station's Electronic Interlocking (EI) system raised an alert at 1.20am, and railway staff responded immediately. A pointsman inspecting the site confirmed that bolts on point number 64 were removed. Staff secured the point before any trains passed.

When misused, law becomes sword instead of shield: Karnataka high court

Bengaluru: The high court has quashed the proceedings in a five-year-old criminal case filed against a real estate developer by a business partner under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. "The courts must remain vigilant against the weaponisation of criminal law for settling civil disputes. The law, when misused, ceases to be a shield and becomes a sword. The complainant, to wreak vengeance or arm-twist the petitioner over a financial dispute, made use of the criminal justice system," Justice M Nagaprasanna stated while quashing the case against Vilas Bhormalji Oswal. Vilas, from Solapur, Maharashtra, established a partnership with Somashekara from Bengaluru and others for purchasing and developing agricultural land. Disputes arose in 2020 when Vilas refused to sign certain documents, hampering the development projects. Somashekara claimed that during a Dec 2020 meeting in a playground in Jayanagar, Vilas threatened him and made caste-based remarks. A complaint was filed with the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in April 2021. Three years later, police registered an FIR, followed by a chargesheet. Vilas contested the chargesheet and summons in the high court, highlighting significant delays throughout the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Libertad (ver precio) Verisure Undo He maintained that he said "do not show your caste mindset" during their disagreement. While Somashekara argued that Vilas knew his scheduled caste status and made caste-specific insults, Justice Nagaprasanna found no evidence of casteist slurs in the initial complaint. The judge noted that witness statements on the Dec 2020 incident were recorded only in March 2024, with the case registered in April 2024. The court found significant discrepancies between the original complaint and the chargesheet, particularly regarding caste-related allegations. "The subject complaint is a blade of vengeance, cloaked in the garb of law. A criminal trial, if permitted to proceed on the glaring facts, would amount to an egregious abuse of legal machinery and would undoubtedly result in patent injustice," the judge observed while quashing the proceedings against Vilas.

Pocso accused at school event: Minister hints at disciplinary action against Fort School headmaster

T'puram: General education minister V Sivankutty on Tuesday hinted that govt would initiate disciplinary action against Fort School headmaster for lapses in connection with the presence of a Pocso case accused during the school reopening day celebration on June 2. Govt viewed the incident seriously and school authorities couldn't claim ignorance over the presence of a Pocso case accused vlogger Mukesh M Nair, said Sivankutty. "Deputy director of education submitted an inquiry report on the incident. The report says the full responsibility for the incident rests with the school headmaster," he said. "The claims that the school headmaster and teachers were unaware of the case against the vlogger were unacceptable. There would be action against all those found responsible for the incident," he added. According to the minister, the school principal met him on Tuesday morning and claimed that he had no prior information about the presence of the vlogger, who was brought to the school as a guest by a private agency that regularly donates study materials to students. But such excuses were unacceptable, he added. Meanwhile, Junior Chamber International (JCI), the co-organiser of the school reopening day celebrations, issued an apology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? However, Nair claimed that he was framed in the case and was out on bail. According to him, professional jealousy of some vloggers might have triggered the charges against him. The education department is investigating Nair's participation as chief guest at the school reopening ceremony. School principal Pradeep Kumar had denied having any prior information on Nair being invited to the ceremony. But the education department is skeptical about the school authority's version, since posters and banners with Nair's photograph were displayed at the school way before the event. Nair presented mementos to students who achieved excellent results and gave a speech at the event. He also took selfies with the students before leaving. Former assistant commissioner of police O A Sunil shared the stage with Nair. Nair is an accused in a case involving the exploitation of a minor girl under the pretext of shooting reels. The case is registered at Poonthura police station and Nair received anticipatory bail. 'Probe on in student complaints' Sivankutty said Kollam regional deputy director would inquire into the allegation that 14 Plus Two students of a school at Kottiyam in Kollam were ousted from the class for sporting long hair. "The general education department will take action based on the report. School authorities should ensure that such incidents do not recur," he said. Also, Kannur district education director will probe another complaint that a student was forced to alight from a school bus for travelling without paying the school bus fee, he added.
