David Hall on weather watch as Invincible Sage steps into calmer waters
A Group One winner on a yielding surface, continued rain will play right into the five-year-old speedster's hands
David Hall's certainly not getting ahead of himself but Hong Kong's midweek wet weather is enough to get the trainer a little excited ahead of Invincible Sage's run in Sunday's Class One Kowloon City Handicap (1,200m).
With plenty of rain around Hong Kong on Thursday and the prospect of more to come, Invincible Sage could get the yielding conditions that allowed him to post his career-best performance when winning last April's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m).
'We've been here long enough to know that with Sha Tin you need to see it on the day before you get too excited, but if I'm looking at the forecast, I'm excited,' said Hall.
After failing to even run a place this term as Ka Ying Rising has taken the Hong Kong sprinting ranks by storm, Invincible Sage steps outside Group company for the first time in a year.

The 110-rated galloper will carry 135 pounds but has gate one under Hugh Bowman in an eight-horse race featuring the likes of Lucky With You, Magic Control, Mugen and Taj Dragon.
'It's hard. He's a Group One winner but he did it in 1:09.33 and he's chasing horses now who are running 1:07.8,' said Hall.
'Unless he gets a wet track, you can't really be too tough on his performances.
'We thought we'd have a run at the handicap. With a little horse that's probably going to be difficult, but I think it's the right option for him.'
Invincible Sage was one of a handful of Hong Kong entries for the Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) down the Meydan straight on April 5's Dubai World Cup night, but the five-year-old's seventh in last month's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) put paid to those plans.
'We put him in there and I thought if he was genuinely a chance to be very competitive we'd go, but off his last run I think without the wet ground he's probably just short of that class and I still want to have a horse left, so we made the decision to stay,' confirmed Hall.
Also among Hall's eight runners this weekend is Encountered, who will be ridden by the in-form James Orman in the Class Two Carpenter Handicap (1,800m).
Another galloper who recently took a step back from Group grade, Encountered could only manage eighth in a Class One over the extended Happy Valley mile last start but the return to nine furlongs at Sha Tin looks likely to suit the six-year-old.
'I've taken the blinkers off him and put the tongue tie back on. He was a bit average at Happy Valley the other day but he's put in a couple of really good runs, so hopefully he brings his best form,' Hall said.
'Once again, it's a handicap and he's up the top, so he's got to carry the weight, but he's a big horse and he's capable of doing it if he can find his form on the day.'

'I've had a lot to do with the second horse, Invincible Sage, and they both got the soft track conditions which suited both horses and you've seen them both run to their premium. 'My horse had to overcome the [on-speed] bias. I knew that going out but I was reluctant to change [Helios Express'] pattern because with the handicap, I thought he was well in with the 123lb. 'He thoroughly deserved it. He's been chasing the champ all season and with his absence, he was the number one seed and he came out in front.' A brilliant winner of last year's Classic Mile and Classic Cup (1,800m), Helios Express delivered Size his second Sha Tin Vase triumph following the handler's success with Courier Wonder in 2021. Tom Marquand up for the fight as Dubai Honour aims to halt Voyage Bubble's bid for history
The 27-year-old is hoping to break his Group One duck in Hong Kong on the four-time top-level scorer Tom Marquand has huge respect for Triple Crown-seeking Voyage Bubble but thinks Dubai Honour has the right credentials to give the United Kingdom back-to-back wins in Sunday's Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) at Sha Tin. Marquand and Dubai Honour are yet to win a top-level prize back home but the pair come alive when sent abroad, winning three Group Ones in Sydney and another in France. The Pride Of Dubai galloper finished second in December's Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m) and has remained in career-best form since, landing the Group One Tancred Stakes at Rosehill (2,400m) on April 1. Just 11 days later, Dubai Honour ran a mighty race to finish second to superstar mare Via Sistina in the Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,000m) and after a month's breather back in the UK, he is back on the road. 'I haven't been massively involved with him since his last run but Issy Paul is basically world-renowned for looking after him now – she does an amazing job,' said Marquand. 'Physically and mentally he's been doing really well and she's happy with him. That's obviously exactly what I want to be hearing. The travelling never affects him now – he's an older gelding so it doesn't faze him. 'He's got that attitude that makes it that much more straightforward – travelling is not an easy thing to do for the horses so it makes our life a lot easier.' Affectionately known as 'Aussie Tom' for his exploits Down Under, 18-time Group One hero Marquand is yet to bag a big one in Hong Kong, but Dubai Honour is in the form of his life and could be the horse to set the record straight. Voyage Bubble, who bids to become just the second horse to win the Hong Kong Triple Crown, is set to be a huge thorn in his side, though Marquand is looking to Rebel's Romance's performance last year to help with any doubts. 'It's been amazing really, to say he's in the form of his life would probably be fair,' said Marquand. 'The mile-and-a-half trip is definitely more his gig now and there was no disgrace going down to a mare of Via Sistina's calibre last start over a trip that was inadequate for him these days. 'With his racing style and the way he's matured – and the way he can switch off during his races – the mile and a half has just become perfect for him. The promotional material has billed the race as an epic clash between one of Hong Kong's best and a foreign raider poised to spoil his big moment, with Voyage Bubble on the edge of something historic. And although Marquand has the utmost respect for Voyage Bubble, he has every faith that his partner can do the business come Sunday. At the trip, he's the one you know that will stay and is proven at it at the highest level,' said Marquand. 'That said, you can't forget a horse like Voyage Bubble – he's a horse who performs at a high level all the time and class can stretch a horse through. It would be very naive to think that the distance alone will get him beat. 'Being involved in these types of races is a lot of fun, I – and Dubai Honour, too – have been lucky to clash against some proper champions. It's not quite as fun when you're not winning them, but it's still an enjoyable thing having a horse that's up for the challenge to take on these types of races. 'Dubai Honour and Voyage Bubble are the talking horses and the ones to beat based on the level of form they bring and the consistency. 'You can never forget a Hong Kong Derby winner like Cap Ferrat but I just think the fact these boys can boast top-level form on multiple occasions is what sets them apart and makes them such an attractive match-up.'

Vintage Lockinge headlines fantastic Newbury card, while Doomben 10000 also excites
Group One contest in Britain includes a trio of horses who will mix it at the top table this season Top-class trio Dancing Gemini, Rosallion and Notable Speech will lock horns in a thrilling Group One Lockinge Stakes (1,600m) at Newbury on Saturday. The Roger Teal-trained Dancing Gemini finished second in last year's Group One Poule d'Essai des Poulains (1,600m) at Longchamp and was far from disgraced when sixth in the Epsom Derby (2,000m) on his next start. Top-level success has continued to elude the Camelot galloper, but he has returned this season in career-best form, winning the Listed Doncaster Mile and Group Two Bet365 Mile at Sandown in two appearances this season. Trained by Bjorn Baker, Overpass won the Group One Winterbottom Stakes (1,200m) last November and maintained his good form in two runs in April, including a second in the Group One T J Smith Stakes (1,200m). One of his biggest dangers will be Group One William Reid Stakes (1,200m) winner Schwarz, who will be ridden by Hong Kong Derby-winning rider Craig Williams in place of regular jockey Blake Shinn. Williams has won the past two runnings of the race on Giga Kick and Bella Nipotina and connections will hope Williams can weave his magic again before Schwarz is retired after the HK$7.33 million showpiece.
