Govt opens special children's rehab centre
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Monday inaugurated a rehabilitation centre for children with physical and neurological developmental challenges.
The facility was established through collaboration between Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC), the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD), and the government.
The inauguration event was attended by DEPD Secretary Taha Ahmed Farooqi, German Consul General Dr Rüdiger Lotz, Global Health Advisor German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (GLRA) Dr Anil Fasstino, and MALC CEO Mervyn Francis, among other notable figures.
Calling the centre a beacon of hope for children with conditions such as autism and Down Syndrome, as well as other physical and neurological challenges, the CM expressed that the government's vision is to provide treatment and opportunities to these children so they may live dignified and fulfilling lives.
CM Shah revealed that the centre offers a comprehensive range of services provided by specialists. These include physiotherapy to improve children's physical development, speech therapy to enhance communication, remedial therapy to support cognitive development, behavioural therapy for encouraging constructive behavior, occupational therapy focusing on daily life skills, and a sensory room to help the children with sensory processing. Further, the facility also offers a play area under professional supervision. The CM visited the center, reviewed the facilities, and met with the children.
He also stated that the government has allocated 100 acres of land near the Malir Expressway for the establishment of an Inclusive City for people with special needs. The city will provide schools, rehabilitation centres, vocational training institutes, a hospital, a neuropsychiatric ward, and residential facilities, as well as a 20 acre park to offer a safe play space for children with special needs, along with a large building housing offices of various welfare organisations.
The CM stated the city would become a model of accessibility and opportunity, where people with disabilities could live independently and contribute actively to society.
Meanwhile, responding to a question, CM Shah stated that the provincial budget would be presented on June 13, 2025, with special attention given to the agriculture sector. Further, he urged provincial representation on the boards of K-Electric (KE), and other power distribution companies, so that Sindh's consumers may directly benefit.
He also stated the government wants to run Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) under a public-private partnership model.
The CM revealed that discussions with the federal government on the matter are ongoing, and while progress is being made, results will take time.

BERLIN: Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday he had 'no doubt' the United States would remain in NATO after a high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump in the White House. Merz said he had raised the issue directly with Trump in talks on Thursday, during the chancellor's first trip to Washington since taking office last month. 'The question that was asked was: do you have any plans to leave NATO? I can say it was answered with a very clear no,' Merz said at an event hosted by the German family-owned business association. 'I know that you are spending more money on defence now, quite a bit more money, and that's a positive thing,' Trump said. The US president has lobbied NATO partners to up their spending commitments to five percent of GDP from the current level of two percent. Defence ministers from the US-led military alliance met in Brussels on Thursday to discuss a change to the spending target ahead of a NATO summit later this month. US defence chief Pete Hegseth indicated allies were close to a deal to boost military budgets. NATO chief Mark Rutte has put forward a proposal to meet Trump's target that would see members spend 3.5 percent of GDP in core military areas by 2032, and 1.5 percent on broader security-related items such as infrastructure.

The meeting covered a range of topics, among which was Trump's acknowledgment of Pakistan's leadership during the recent spike in tensions between India and Pakistan. These tensions reached a boiling point after a deadly attack in the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on April 22, which killed 26 people. India swiftly blamed Pakistan, but without presenting evidence. Islamabad denied the Indian claims and called for an independent probe. India the took hostile actions including the suspension of the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), halting trade, and closing border crossings, as it retaliated against the alleged attack. In response, Pakistan undertook reciprocal measures, including halting trade and closing its airspace to Indian aircraft. The situation quickly escalated as missile strikes and air raids rocked both nations, resulting in dozens of casualties. Trump took credit for preventing the situation from spiraling further, stating, 'Pakistan has very strong leadership. Some people won't like when I say that, but it is what it is.' His diplomatic efforts, which involved intense talks with both sides, were credited with diffusing the immediate crisis. 'I spoke to very talented people on both sides. I said, 'We're not going to deal with you on trade if you're going to go shooting each other and whipping out nuclear weapons,'' Trump recalled, referencing the dangerous escalation that had brought the nuclear-armed neighbours to the brink of a full-scale conflict. The situation worsened on May 7, India attacked several Pakistani cities and targeted areas in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), killing civilians and destroying infrastructure. In retaliation, Pakistan's military shot down Indian warplanes, including Rafale jets, which are considered key assets of the Indian Air Force. Pakistan also neutralised waves of Israeli-made drones launched by India. On May 10, India escalated further by targeting Pakistani airbases, prompting Pakistan to launch Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, striking Indian military installations. This continued escalation brought the region to a perilous juncture before Trump intervened. Following intense diplomatic efforts, Trump announced a ceasefire on May 10, which was later confirmed by both countries' foreign ministers. Despite the ceasefire, however, a war of narratives continued to unfold. Pakistan credited Trump, along with China and Gulf states, for playing a vital role in diffusing the situation, while Indian officials downplayed foreign involvement, asserting that the truce was the result of direct bilateral talks. Trump, however, has repeatedly reiterated his stance, taking pride in his role. "I got that war stopped. Now I hope we don't go back and find out that they started it, but I don't think they will," he said. He also praised the leadership on both sides, specifically highlighting the strength of Pakistan's leadership, despite some resistance to his comments. 'They stopped that war. I was very proud of that,' he added. The president also extended his praise to Indian leadership, noting, 'The leader of India, who's a great guy, was here a few weeks ago. We had some great talks. CM vows plastic-free Sindh on World Environment Day
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that the day is being celebrated worldwide under the theme "End Plastic Pollution." He emphasised the need for collective action to protect the environment from plastic pollution and appealed to the public to minimise plastic use and adopt a clean environment. The CM said that the Sindh government has launched a plastic cleanup campaign across the province and is ensuring strict enforcement of plastic laws. The Sindh government is promoting the use of eco-friendly cloth and paper bags. A complete ban on plastic shopping bags will be imposed from June 15. 3,000 cloth bags Like the rest of the world, World Environment Day was celebrated across Sindh with fervour and renewed commitment to ecological preservation. DG Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) Waqar Hussain Phulpoto started the day by planting a sapling, symbolising the province's dedication to sustainable and environment-friendly initiatives. Speaking to the media, he announced that 3,000 cloth bags have been distributed at major shopping malls to encourage the public to shift away from harmful plastic shopping bags.
