SJPD is hiring new officers, paid academy sponsorship available
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — The St. Joseph Police Department is inviting anyone interested in a Law Enforcement career to participate in their upcoming new hire testing.
SJPD currently has 18 positions open with the department they would like to see filled soon.
Currently, we have 11 people in our hiring process or background investigations," said Sgt. Jeremy Peters with the SJPD. "So realistically, if everything works out, we should be down to about seven positions and we'd like to see all of those filled."
Candidates will complete a written exam covering reading, writing, grammar, and math, followed by a physical agility test. Those who pass both will advance to a panel interview with department leaders.
SJPD emphasizes they are seeking individuals who will be an asset to the team and uphold the department's high standards.
"Of course, we want people with good integrity and who are self-motivated," Peters said. "We're always looking to add to our staff with people who want to get out into the community and make a difference."
The hiring test will take place on Saturday, May 17 and will be the test where candidates can qualify to get into the local police Academy this summer in July. Tuition and costs for the police Academy training, which will be held at Missouri Western State University's campus, will be fully covered.
"If we decide to hire an individual, we're going to make sure that the academy gets paid for," Peters said. "While they're attending the classes, they're going to make about $18 an hour to go to school along with accruing benefit time.
New hire testing will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at the St. Joseph Police Department, located at 501 Faraon Street.
Students are guaranteed to start earning vacation, holiday and sick leave while in the academy.

Taylor Swift Files Restraining Order Against Man, Claims Harassment
Originally appeared on E! Online Taylor Swift is taking legal measures to ensure her safety. The 'Karma' singer recently filed a temporary restraining order against a Colorado resident, Brian Jason Wagner, who she alleges has visited her Los Angeles home multiple times in the last year, stating she is now fearing for the safety of herself and her family in documents obtained by E! News. 'Mr. Wagner made various statements about living at my property (not true),' Swift wrote in a legal declaration obtained by E! News, 'being in a relationship with me (not true), believing I am the mother of his son (not true), and needing to see me in person, all of which are untrue and disconnected from reality.' In her declaration, Swift states that Wagner first visited her Los Angeles residence in 2024, returning to the property several times in July of that year, adding, 'On at least one of the occasions in July 2024, Mr. Wagner was carrying a glass bottle that could have been used as a weapon.' Wagner again visited Swift's Los Angeles residence last month, she alleged, writing in her declaration that he claimed he 'was there checking on a friend (again, this is entirely untrue).' Her team also found that Wagner had allegedly somehow managed to update his driver's license with her own Los Angeles address, sent her staff 'hundreds' of threatening emails, and attempted to divert her own mail to his place of residence. 'I have no relationship with Mr. Wagner and I have never met nor communicated with him,' Swift continued in her declaration, noting that his recent May visits to her home have made the situation more dire, adding 'The fact that both of these recent visits and Mr. Wagner's inappropriate and threatening communications to my staff about me have escalated in recent weeks creates a fear of imminent harm.' Swift was granted a temporary restraining order in Los Angeles, which will bar Wagner from her home, places of work and vehicles. E! News has attempted to reach an attorney for Wagner for comment but has not yet heard back. This is just the latest time legal action has had to be taken against an alleged stalker of Swift. In 2024, a man was arrested outside of The Eras Tour July 17 concert in Germany. The man, who was not identified by name, had purchased a ticket for the show, authorities said, and was arrested upon his entry, with local police telling the Associated Press at the time they were, 'following tips from organizers of the event.' (He was kept detained until Swift left the city.) In recent months, Swift has been photographed spending time in Florida with Kelce as he prepares for the next NFL season, as well as time in New York. However, the 'Fortnight' singer has been open about never staying in the same place for too long. 'I try not to ever really say where I am, since all my addresses are on the internet," she told CBS Mornings in a 2019 interview. 'People tend to show up uninvited like dudes who think we have an imaginary marriage.' She emphasized the longstanding fear in her life, adding, 'I've had a lot of stalkers show up to the house armed.' For the latest breaking news updates, click here to download the E! News App

Sean "Diddy" Combs Trial Week 5: Defense Requests Second Mistrial
Originally appeared on E! Online Sean 'Diddy' Combs is back in court. The 19th day of the rap mogul's sex trafficking trial resumed June 9 following his defense team's second request for a mistrial, according to NBC News reporters in the courtroom. Over the weekend, attorney Alexandra Shapiro filed a motion viewed by E! News, in which she argued that his ex Cassie Ventura and her friend Bryana Bongolan of lying about the latter being dangled from a 17th-floor balcony in 2016 by Combs. His defense team—whose first motion was denied by Judge Arun Subramanian May 28—accused the prosecution of 'misconduct' with the 'introduction of perjured testimony.' The prosecution will respond to the motion and the judge is set to respond June 10. As the jury awaits the decision, Combs' ex—who is going by 'Jane' during the trial and was identified as 'Victim-2' in the indictment—has returned to the witness box following an emotional testimony about alleged abuse in their relationship. 'My feeling of obligation really started to stem from the fact that my partner was paying my rent,' she told the jury June 6, alleging that if she objected to his sexual requests, 'He would just start saying things like 'If you want to break, that's fine. Do you need, like, three more months in the house? Because I'm not about to be paying for a woman's rent that I'm not even seeing.'' She said that Combs began paying the rent for her home in April 2023, two years into their relationship, and is still doing so after he allegedly proposed a 'love contract' the month before. 'Jane' broke down in tears during her testimony after recalling a 'hotel night' on her birthday, which she specifically requested not to do. 'I just sat there on the couch, got in position to have intercourse, so we could just get it over with,' she told jurors. 'I asked Sean for a condom. Sean was giving me this really bad look. He gave me a dirty look, like shaking his head and said, 'You better not ask for a f--king condom.'' After Combs allegedly handing the escort the condom, she said he was 'so dismissive.' 'He was walking away,' she testified. 'He looked so disappointed while all of this was happening. It made me feel really bad. I just wanted it to be over.'
