Sweetgreen adds fries to the menu at restaurants nationwide

Sweetgreen is putting its spin on a fast-food staple with the nationwide launch Tuesday of Ripple Fries — its first French fry product.
Why it matters: The fast-casual chain — which first gained a devoted lunch following among office workers over its salads — has been on an expansion spree since going public in 2021.
The chain, headquartered in Los Angeles, has been broadening its menu and opening restaurants beyond its traditional target area in central business districts.
The big picture: Sweetgreen says it's the first national brand to offer air-fried fries that are prepared without seed oils.
Ripple fries are made with five simple ingredients, including avocado oil, Nicolas Jammet, Sweetgreen co-founder and chief concept officer, told Axios.
The fries, which were tested in Los Angeles restaurants, come with a choice of two new housemade sauces: Garlic Aioli and Pickle Ketchup.
What they're saying:"As we look at our core categories of salads, bowls and plates — and more people engaging with Sweetgreen at dinner — we really got excited about a really craveable side dish or shareable that can sit next to those things," Jammet said.
"We didn't see any options in the national fast-food landscape that had fries that were a little more conscious," Jammet said, adding the company wanted to create a "product that actually made you feel good and that you could feel good about eating."
"This launch is another step forward in redefining what fast food can be," Jammet said.
Kelly's taste test: Sweetgreen gave Axios an early taste of the Ripple Fries and both sauces.
The crispy potatoes had the perfect amount of seasoning and the freshness shined through.
The pickle ketchup was my favorite sauce and the fries complimented my bowl.
Flashback: The first Sweetgreen opened in 2007 on M Street in Washington, D.C.
It's more than doubled its store count since the start of the pandemic, growing from 103 in early 2020 to more than 240 locations.
Last May, Sweetgreen added its first red meat option Caramelized Garlic Steak to the menu.

Moments Lab is part of a growing number of AI startups raising money to reshape Hollywood and related fields. Moments Lab provides tools that index video libraries and create new videos from raw footage. The company recently raised $24 million in Series B funding from Oxx, with participation from Orange Ventures, Kadmos, Supernova Invest, and Elaia Partners. It plans to use the funding to build on its existing tech and roll out an agentic AI tool. To date, it's raised $37.4 million. Paris-based Moments Lab was founded by twin brothers Fred and Philippe Petitpont in 2016. Philippe was a product manager for French media company TF1 Group, while Fred was a tech lead at French ad holding company Havas' BETC Digital. They say they saw a need for media and entertainment companies to produce more video at a lower cost to feed the growing streaming ecosystem. Their clients include Warner Bros. Discovery, Banijay Entertainment, Fullwell Entertainment, Hearst, Thomson Reuters, Sinclair, and Amazon Ads. Moments Lab's core tool, MXT-2, breaks down and indexes video footage into components, like people who are on screen and what they're doing, and generates descriptions of them. Its key pitch is that it saves users time and money. Philippe Petitpont said the tech can identify soundbites for clips for social media and things like trailers and highlight reels about seven times as fast as an employee could, citing internal research. He also said some clients have reported making twice as much revenue from social media using the product. "For them, it's a way to create new revenue streams," Petitpont told Business Insider, referring to revenue from social media. "Before now, it was very complicated for production companies to create a revenue stream because there was a huge need for humans — it's a very tedious task." Moments Lab's newer agentic AI tool, which it says Hearst is among those testing, takes raw video material and turns it into rough cuts using written prompts. Petitpont said the AI agent can do this at a fraction of the time it takes people to do the work. He said its most promising application so far is in reality TV. Scripted TV is still a work in progress. Petitpont said Moments Lab has gained momentum with Hollywood companies since the beginning of the year, as they face pressure to make more shows at lower costs. He said it's signed a big studio as a client, though he wouldn't name it. "The demand from Netflix, Amazon's Prime Video, Peacock, is so strong that production companies need to produce more content than ever before, and they don't have more money to produce a show," he said. "Being able to produce at lower cost is more important than ever. That's where they're interested in using new approaches." AI tools are widely used in Hollywood to make production processes more efficient and, for now, generate short videos from text. But Hollywood is highly protective of its intellectual property, which is a barrier to adoption. Another is its labor unions, which worry that AI will replace their members. Petitpont said one of the most time-consuming parts of the sales process is assuring companies' legal teams that it won't use their IP to train its model. Moments Lab says its model is trained on a dataset of 1.5 billion assets that it describes as a mix of open-source content and content from partners that are part of its research program (a consortium of research labs, media rights owners, and tech companies). The company doesn't shy away from the idea that automating work done by assistant editors and others can reduce the need for human workers. Petitpont said one US financial media client told him it expects to use fewer editors as a result of using its tech. "The big question is: Will the assistant start to be the senior editor, or will the job disappear?" he said. "We don't know yet." One thing there seems to be broad agreement on in the industry is that AI usage will grow — not only to save time on pre- and post-production functions, but make high-quality original video fast. Other startups that tackle film editing functions include Runway, Filmustage, and Imaginario. Petitpont said the ability for media companies to use AI to help make full-length documentaries based on their video libraries is only several months off, imagining a company building a film on the history of America using decades of news footage. In a year, he expects Moments Lab to be able to provide predictive modeling tools that will let editors maximize the audience a given video will get. "That's what we believe will be the next thing, and we're not very far from that because audience data is very easily available on YouTube," he said. Titled Nevold (short for 'never old'), the entity is led by Sophie Brocart, the former CEO of Patou, who joined the Chanel team in January. Under her leadership, Nevold will become a 'business-to-business open platform' that tackles resource scarcity, as many of luxury's favorite textiles, including cashmere, silk, and leather, face threats from climate change, perBusiness of Fashion. The business also addresses the fashion industry's waste problem, the brunt of which is often placed on fast fashion. Luxury, however, claims a fair share in the damage, with unsold inventory at industry-leading conglomerates like Kering and LVMHclimbing to billions of dollarsover the last decade. 'We started by asking ourselves what happens to the materials that don't make it into a final product, or those that reach the end of their first life,' Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel's president of fashion, toldVogue Business. 'At Chanel, we didn't destroy unsold products. But we also didn't yet have a real system to understand their full potential. Nevold is that system.' Under the Nevold umbrella, there are three key operations: L'Atelier des Matières, the Chanel-created recycling company that pairs brands with textile waste solutions; Filatures du Parc, the leading European wool spinning mill known for its recycled yarns; and Authentic Material, the French leather recycling imprint. Working in tandem with each company, Chanel's goal is to make Nevold a key component of a 'profound transformation process that is rethinking the entire product lifecycle, developing new savoir-faire and professions… and contributing to a more circular economy,' according to a release. 'It's not about Chanel recovering her waste to do Chanel,' Pavlovsky said toBoF. 'It's Chanel recovering waste from Chanel and from whoever on the market who [is] ready to sell us the waste to recreate a new kind of materials.'

Light rail service to south Phoenix gets underway

Light rail in the Valley entered a new era over the weekend when the first train traversed the system's south Phoenix expansion. The big picture: A 5.5-mile extension that runs south along Central Avenue from downtown Phoenix opened Saturday. The extension has eight stations, with Central and Baseline Road marking the end of the line. The light rail system now has 35 miles of track. Federal funds covered about half the cost of the $1.3 billion project, with revenue from the Proposition 400 transportation tax and the city paying for much of the rest. Why it matters: About 44% of area residents have limited or no access to cars, according to Valley Metro. Jessica Mefford-Miller, CEO of Valley Metro, which runs the light rail system, noted the new line is a bridge across the Salt River, making it "a literal" and "symbolic connection" between south Phoenix and the rest of the metro area. Valley Metro expects the extension to add more than 8,000 daily riders to the system, which averages about 32,000 boardings per day. Driving the news: A large crowd gathered Saturday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. "I believe the expansion will do justice for the people out here. Providing opportunities to get downtown, and also for people downtown to come down here," an attendee named Lindsay told ABC15. Zoom in: The south Phoenix extension was not the only major change to the light rail over the weekend. The system is now separated into A and B lines, with the former running east to west from downtown Mesa to downtown Phoenix, and the latter north to south from Metro Parkway to south Phoenix. Riders can switch lines at the new downtown Phoenix transit hub, which also opened Saturday. There are 14 new trains, which will now arrive at stations every 12 minutes, down from 15. Catch up quick: Construction began in 2019 and was originally expected to be completed in 2023, but the pandemic and other factors meant delays. What they're saying: "This is us really growing up in the world," Mefford-Miller told Axios. The intrigue: When Republican lawmakers referred Proposition 479 — the renewal of the regional transportation tax — to the 2024 ballot, they included a provision prohibiting the money from being used to extend light rail. Yes, but: Cities can still use local and federal funds to lay more tracks. What's next: Valley Metro, which runs the light rail system, has grand expansion plans. The Capitol Extension will run along Washington and Jefferson streets to 15th Avenue next to the Arizona Supreme Court. An environmental review and design processes are underway. The I-10 West Extension will connect to the Capitol area and will largely run along the freeway median, ending at the Desert Sky Transit Center at Thomas Road and 79th Avenue. That project is still in the planning phase. Valley Metro is also looking to expand the Tempe streetcar system into Mesa.
