NFL Insider: 'Blessing in disguise' Vikings missed out on Darnold, Jones
The team had been rumored to be discussing the idea of bringing back either Darnold or Jones, but they ultimately didn't, and now they are all in on McCarthy going forward.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer wrote as the Vikings training camp started that the veterans of the Vikings' 2024 quarterback group not returning may be a "blessing in disguise." The former top draft pick spent all offseason adding to his frame and sharpening his mind so that he would be ready to hit the ground running when his sophomore season started.
Breer writes, ". . .It was a long rookie year, to the point where the Vikings offered deals to Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones to return. It may be a blessing in disguise that neither accepted. As a result, McCarthy has taken all of the first-team reps since the start of spring and has found his voice as a leader on the team."
McCarthy dominated the talk on the first day of training camp with his ability to push the ball downfield. He most notably hit Jordan Addison on a 60-yard touchdown pass downfield that had social media buzzing after the team shared the play on social media.
Seems the Vikings may be okay for now with the former National Championship-winning quarterback.

McCarthy Shows Love to Home Fans
McCarthy Shows Love to Home Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Vikings went 14-3 last season, but it ended with a thud. After losing to the Detroit Lions in Week 18, the Vikings were bounced from the playoffs in the wild-card round by the Los Angeles Rams. Despite winning 14 games, Minnesota is making a change at quarterback under fourth-year head coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell has a 34-17 record in the regular season but is still searching for his first postseason win. He's turning to J.J. McCarthy in 2025 to replace Sam Darnold as the team's new starter. The former Michigan Wolverines star missed all of last season with a fully torn meniscus in his right knee. After undergoing surgery, he became the first quarterback taken in the first round to miss his entire rookie season due to injury. Now, with the 2025 NFL training camp underway, Minnesota is putting its full attention on McCarthy, who has a strong supporting cast around him. McCarthy sat down with the NFL Network on Saturday and shared his thoughts on playing in Minnesota: "We got the best fanbase in the NFL, I guarantee that." The Vikings averaged more than 66,000 fans per home game last season. U.S. Bank Stadium has a capacity of 66,200, expandable to 72,000 for special events. It's been the team's home since 2016. McCarthy also expressed his excitement about seeing fans return for training camp: "I'm so looking forward to seeing them here and hearing the SKOL chant," McCarthy said. "Just being able to interact with them individually and as a collective, they are just awesome. Nothing but gracious and supportive ever since I got here, and I can't wait to do great things for them this year." The 22-year-old was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He led Michigan to a College Football Playoff title in January 2024 and was named Big Ten Quarterback of the Year that season. McCarthy is listed ahead of Sam Howell and Brett Rypien on the depth chart. He'll have two proven weapons at receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison as well as talented tight end T.J. Hockenson. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 26, 2025, where it first appeared.

Pair of Oklahoma Sooners named to Maxwell Award watch list
The Oklahoma Sooners boast some offensive firepower at the helm heading into 2025. And both are out of the transfer portal. John Mateer and Jaydn Ott were big-time additions for Brent Venables and Jim Nagy, and the two former West Coast stars provide a lot of the optimism for what should be a resurgent season in 2025. Fall camp will kick off on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the 2025 season. With the Season just over a month away, watch lists will begin rolling out, and the Sooners' backfield mates landed on the Maxwell Award watch list. The Maxwell Award is given to the most outstanding player in college football. Three former Sooners have won the award. Tommy McDonald won the Maxwell back in 1956. Jason White won the award during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2004. Baker Mayfield is the most recent recipient of the national honor, winning the award in 2017. In 2018, when Kyler Murray won the Heisman, the Maxwell went to Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Mateer is coming off a 2024 season in which he led the nation in total touchdowns with 44 and had nearly 4,000 yards of total offense for Washington State. Ott is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season, but back in 2023, he ran for 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns for Cal. He's hoping he can have a bounce-back year this year ahead of the 2026 NFL draft. Mateer and Ott will need to have big years for the Sooners in 2025 to be in the running for the prestigious award. If they do, the Sooners could be on their way to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.
